The Return

The Return by Nicholas Sparks Book Summary

In the romantic tradition of Dear John, Nicholas Sparks returns with the story of an injured Navy doctor -- and two women whose secrets will change the course of his life in this #1 New York Times bestseller.

Trevor Benson never intended to move back to New Bern, North Carolina. But when a mortar blast outside the hospital where he worked sent him home from Afghanistan with devastating injuries, the dilapidated cabin he'd inherited from his grandfather seemed as good a place to regroup as any.

Tending to his grandfather's beloved beehives, Trevor isn't prepared to fall in love with a local . . . yet, from their very first encounter, Trevor feels a connection with deputy sheriff Natalie Masterson that he can't ignore. But even as she seems to reciprocate his feelings, she remains frustratingly distant, making Trevor wonder what she's hiding.

Further complicating his stay in New Bern is the presence of a sullen teenage girl, Callie, who lives in the trailer park down the road. Trevor hopes Callie can shed light on the mysterious circumstances of his grandfather's death, but she offers few clues -- until a crisis triggers a race to uncover the true nature of Callie's past, one more intertwined with the elderly man's passing than Trevor could ever have imagined.

In his quest to unravel Natalie and Callie's secrets, Trevor will learn the true meaning of love and forgiveness . . . and that in life, to move forward, we must often return to the place where it all began.

- The Return5 star

As usual it was awesome! Nicholas Sparks never disappoints.

- Love and a Mystery5 star

A lovely story about love, loneliness, with a little mystery thrown in to make it exciting. I didn’t read the first two books, but I sure am glad to have read the third. Stick around to the end, it’s also a mystery.

- Ok3 star

Not my favorite Sparks book! A little disappointed!

- Excellent5 star

Another winner. Spell binding from start to finish.

- So exciteddddd5 star

Nicholas Sparks style predictable love but still was great!

- Predictable but enjoyable4 star

I’ve read all of his books. They are all pretty similar and predictable but I’ve enjoyed all of them.

- Easy Sunday read3 star

This book was a decent read. I liked his other books better. This one felt like a movie script.

- Loved the story line4 star

Intriguing with good development

- Homophobic and racist1 star

Has everybody forgotten the horrible emails Nicholas Sparks wrote to keep LGBT and African Americans out of his school? Boycott.

- Not up to par2 star

This was not anywhere near what I expect from Nicholas Sparks! Not anywhere near the same level as The Notebook or Every Breath, if I didn’t know, I wouldn’t think it was the same author. Very disappointing, if you’re only going to write one book a year, make it a good one. Not enough romance, a strange story line and Sparks seemed to lose his way as he tried to weave the mystery and wasn’t able to pull me in like he has in the past. Sad

- Not worth the wait2 star

I have been waiting for Nicholas Sparks new book “ The Return” to come out, what a major disappointment! I forced myself to finish it.

- The Return2 star

Not close to my favorite read. Too much for too little.

- Meh3 star

Predictable and superficial...it felt like three underdeveloped stories squished into one book.

- Great Book5 star

I love how this book took me to each person’s situation. I could empathize and see a little of me in all the characters. I spent some time contemplating how I’d react in these situations. The book describes my PTSD symptoms. I know that it is a fictional character but it felt good to know someone felt the same way I do. This book is a reread and that’s the highest praise I think a book can get!
