Instant #1 New York Times Bestseller

A People Book of the Week, Book of the Month Club selection, and Best of Fall in Good Housekeeping, PopSugar, The Washington Post, New York Post, Shondaland, CNN, and more!

[A] quirky, big-hearted novel…Wry, wise, and often laugh-out-loud funny, it’s a wholly original story that delivers pure pleasure.” —People

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove comes a charming, poignant novel about a crime that never took place, a would-be bank robber who disappears into thin air, and eight extremely anxious strangers who find they have more in common than they ever imagined.

Looking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can’t fix their own marriage. There’s a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can’t seem to agree on anything, from where they want to live to how they met in the first place. Add to the mix an eighty-seven-year-old woman who has lived long enough not to be afraid of someone waving a gun in her face, a flustered but still-ready-to-make-a-deal real estate agent, and a mystery man who has locked himself in the apartment’s only bathroom, and you’ve got the worst group of hostages in the world.

Each of them carries a lifetime of grievances, hurts, secrets, and passions that are ready to boil over. None of them is entirely who they appear to be. And all of them—the bank robber included—desperately crave some sort of rescue. As the authorities and the media surround the premises these reluctant allies will reveal surprising truths about themselves and set in motion a chain of events so unexpected that even they can hardly explain what happens next.

Rich with Fredrik Backman’s “pitch-perfect dialogue and an unparalleled understanding of human nature” (Shelf Awareness), Anxious People is an ingeniously constructed story about the enduring power of friendship, forgiveness, and hope—the things that save us, even in the most anxious times.

Carocross

Best Book This Year. Absolutely perfect read. Made me laugh. Made me cry. And makes me think we’re all anxious people trying to do the best we can. I LOVE this writer🥰

AuntJannie

Couldn’t get through it. The way in which the story was told was unusual and clever, but I got tired of it and impatient to simply read the story. I’m sure the author brought it all together in the end, like he did with Ove, but I’ll never know.

KJOHN131

Ehh?. There are really good parts of this book but I just feel like it’s covered up with cliché sayings and extra words padding pages for no reason. The ending was the saving grace for me. I almost dnf, happy I didn’t but the price should be lowered.

Lenebean685

My fave author does it again. Read this! And all this author’s books!

Tuckasaurous

Soulful, truthful, simply amazing writing. ♥️♥️♥️

Sean Cairne

Brilliant. I laughed so hard I cried and cried so hard while laughing I couldn’t see to read. Heart warming and zainy intertaining. Thank you Fredrik Backman for another book that I still laugh about long after I’ve put it down.

BluDevil007

As predicted…. Quirky funny. I began to join the characters in empathizing with the thief… when I wasn’t laughing.

Miwltawansa

Good read. I really enjoyed this book. I felt it was a little slow to get into it but I’m glad I read it. Loved the ending and all the connections

AEG1120

Amazing. This is legitimately the best, most touching, most hilarious book I’ve read as an adult. I laughed and cried and want to live better after reading it (not a hyperbole).

AWalley5

Anxious People. There is just so much truth here, and it shows how we are all connected even though we don’t realize it, or if if we think we don’t want to be connected. Everyone really does need to be- connected that is- to someone.

Danithegirl04

Yet another surprise wonder. This is the third of Backman’s books I’ve read and I always am so pleasantly surprised with his underlying love of humanity in the most simplistic ways. His story telling leads to many revelations and secrets that unfold throughout and I just adore his story telling. The story might start out slow or dry, but it’s so worth finishing his books because they make you a better human. And that’s what his stories are all about, being a human in a large and complicated world, and finding the pure love and joy in some of the smallest things.

The Myth5214

Anxious People. Wonderfully written with excellent pacing, character development, and wonderful interaction and twists. Brought tears to my eyes.

Maf205

A beautiful story if humanity. This book will make you laugh and cry and fall in love with the characters. It takes a few chapters to become hooked but once you are you don’t want it to end. The prose is beautiful and reminds me that fiction brings us reminders of real life- we are all in this together.

Meaghankelly24

Thought provoking. Somehow turns the most depressing topics into comedy without minimizing the seriousness of the topic. Loved this novel.

Connor Bruton

Fredrik Backman is like no other. My greatest takeaway from this novel is that Fredrik Backman is a fantastic author. He writes in a fascinating way: breaking the fourth wall and asking the reader what they would do in certain situations. I love that he explores the vulnerability of the most mysterious and intimidating characters (Zara, Roger), revealing that even the most rigid people have emotional baggage too. I also love that the story is told backward - with the police questioning the victims first and then the true story of the bank robbery/hostage situation - because this makes the novel unpredictable and exciting to find out what happens next. Definitely a book I will be thinking about for years to come.

Collegereaderk

Creative and wonderful. Incredible. Don’t be turned away by it being a little slow and slightly confusing at first. It is so worth it. Relatable and heartbreaking and uplifting. Feeling lonely has never felt less alone.

Allison nolagirl

Amazing!. The interwoven character happen chances is truly amazing. The omniscient yet blinks narrator point of view is another great touch along with slightly anonymity of the bank robber!

Zombies disny anna!!!

Anxious people. Wonderfully crazy story!!!

Lola Flores

Amazing. What a great book. Perfectly written and what an incredible story. Thank you for writing this!

Speech/language lady

Im not crying you’re crying. I cannot explain why this book, on a random summer day, affected me the way it did. I identified with something on every single page. It cracked me up and made me sad. It also made me nod my head in agreement and feel hopeful. I don’t know what else you could want from a book.

BookishMA

A real page turner!. Fast read, loved the character connections.

Mmjimenezrn

Heartwarming and entertaining. Another good one by Fredrick Backman. Some of the characters were a little over the top but I loved the slow development into their backgrounds and personalities

Engineerbroad

Love this book!. So unique and entertaining!

Just Amazing.. One of the best books ever from one of the best authors ever. You really nailed so many feelings.

Kathleen G.

Anxious People - loved them. Love this. One of my new favorite authors.

KThugs3

4 stars. I give this book a solid 4 stars! I do love all of the books that I have read by this author. I loved all of the characters by the end of the book, which is a bit funny because when I started it, I was mostly annoyed or disliked each character. It’s funny, because people are like that sometimes in the real world, too. The overall message of the book was great, and there were a few things mentioned throughout that I felt applied to my life. Some of the characters end up telling stories or saying something that made me grasp or understand something about people in my own life. I did knock it down one star only because I felt it was a bit difficult to follow at first. I was also able to guess two of the plot twists throughout the book.

Punkinrl

Anxious People. Great read, full of surprises and truths!

Cut wood

Simple but complex. Starts out simple. But soon the story and characters are surprising and complex. Excellent book.

Bajandumpling

A delightful read. This story is hilarious, touching, improbable, touching, and unpredictable all at once. Loved it !

Claydo21

Amazing. This book made me laugh, cry and gave me hope for my life and current situation. Love this author and his style of writing. I definitely recommend this book.

St3r1ingSi1v3r

Touching Story, Lovely Characters. I picked up this book for the mystery and stayed for the story. The writing style/voice takes a moment to get used to but once you’re into it you can’t bear to stop reading. I fell in love with every character, and even more so with the relationships between them. The author does a great job revealing little things along the way that all come together to form a bigger picture about life and love and all of the dumb things we do with good intentions. Satisfying ending that brought tears to my eyes - I’m so happy I read this book :)

Jamiam987

Amazing. Read it over several days- the second half in one long stretch A story- with funny characters and you can’t help but like them

Sues004

Anxious People. I had a hard time with the 1st half of the book. But…I stuck with it and the story grew on me. This author definitely has a different way of writing.

Tim the third

They are all good. Just pick one of his books and read it. They are all good.

Water 🌊

Best book. The smart writer can write this

LP827

Another winner in my book!. Having read several of Backman’s books, I really looked forward to this one and it didn’t disappoint. Loved all the characters, with their quirkiness and complexity. Their lives intersect one day and they learn about each other and themselves. A great story.

EnE16

Really good!. Really endearing and great storytelling

Cc22hou

Uplifting. This was the story I needed to restore my faith in us humans and our communities. It’s a fun story about how we’re all connected to one another and that we are all trying our best with our small brains and big hearts.

Lieselbc

Everyone should read this. What a fantastic reminder that we are all humans doing the best we can with what we have. Makes you want to stop and learn people’s stories.

Jne212

Beautiful.. What a beautiful story. I wept so openly my friends were concerned on our flight. It is a tremendous story that winds together so beautifully. I loved this book.

Maniiscool

One of those books you want to give to everyone you know. Just amazing, you have to read!!

Kikarm

Touching and funny at the same time. Don’t let the beginning trick you. It’s a book with so many wonderful quotes, so in the present, profound, sad, but not sad, and yet you end up with so much hope in human kind, in love in family

Cc2cc2cc2

Anxious People by Fredrik Backman. Stumbled upon this book and it is brilliant! The characters are complex, unique, witty, and lovable idiots (he uses “idiots” a lot throughout the book). The author intertwines the characters lives in a way that is new and fresh, with humor about a serious subject. Tremendous read. Love the way Backman tells a story.

Estebanlaw

I’m here, too.. This book left me in tears. Of sadness. Or happiness, I cannot tell which.

Mari....Love

Loved it. I truly enjoyed reading this book. The twist and turns kept me engaged and thinking about my own life. Definitely a must read.

Amazing Grace. Amazing woven quilt of wit, humanity, profound insight and commentary on the impact that financial peril has on families and how we can help one another with surprising acts of grace.

Ajgoldbug

Incredible. One of the sweetest, funniest, most emotionally affecting books I’ve ever read. Holy cow.

I have loved this app

Lovely tangled tale. It took longer to love this story and to untangle it than it did Ove, but in the end, once I’d turned the last page, it felt just a sweetly sad and delightful.

Casterwill_

Absolutely beautiful story!. Being a person can be hard, and this books gives a little insight into why.

BookLover1963

Anxious People by Fredrik Blackman. I am 56 years old and an avid reader of many different types of genres. I have NEVER written a review on anything..... nor have I ever rated any book I have read. That changed today, upon completion of this BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN READ. This is the most amazing, heartfelt, thought provoking book I have EVER had the pleasure of reading. The book is about life. A very, very true account of life. About, love, hate, anger, jealousy, heartbreak, guilt and every other emotion we, as humans, go through on a daily basis. This is a story of human day to day life, and the struggles and demons we all face. Bravo to the writer, whom, in my opinion.... taps into so many different emotions. I cannot even begin to count all the quotes I have highlighted in this read. This book will be highly recommended to every reader that I know. Devour it...... and let it touch you, the way it has me. 10+ stars if allowed!!!

Ssathwal

Wonderful. What a perfectly wonderful story

Juliusa

Wow, Much More Than It Seems. Beautifully written piece about connections and empathy. A truly moving work disguised as a mystery, with lots of humor and pathos. It will keep you riveted until it’s surprise ending(s). Read it and enjoy. In these crazy times especially this is a much needed work. Thanks.

Vegamy

Worth the journey.. As with “A Man Called Ove”, the story begins slow but stick with it. In the end, it’s was so worth the read. I loved this story.

Readingbythesea

Anxious People. I found the story hard to get into. The humorous parts were good, the ending was predictable. I expected more with the ratings it has received.

LaLaw0821

Literally the best novel I’ve ever read. This book made me feel things I haven’t felt in a long time. If you’re a person going through a hard time, this book is for you. Can’t thank the author enough for writing something this great. Entertaining, heartbreaking, and heartwarming. A truly great story. Poetry for people who dislike poetry. Lovable characters, TRULY GREAT, and an absolute classic. I’ll absolutely be reading every one of Backman’s novels after this.

DCraighill

Best read I’ve had in a while. So many great story lines in one. A great feel good book for right now.

Old Man cyclist

Avid Reader. A wise heartfelt story.

Lore Palli

Delightful. An absolute delight.

EPMurph

Fantastic!. By far, one of the best books I’ve ever read. Heartfelt, humorous, rich and full of life’s beautiful mishaps and mysteries. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a read that offers a little understanding, a bit more compassion, and a whole lot of laughter on the ties that bind us together, both seen and invisible. Backman is superb!

AlyPowell

Anxious People. I didn’t want the stories to end...

JumpinSwim

Absolutely loved this.. I laughed, I related, I scratched my head, and I cried. I purchased this book not really knowing what I was going to get into. It was the new year, and in my new year slump/depression I told myself I was going to read more. I had a very hard time putting this book down, and that NEVER happens to me. Give this book a read. I didn’t mind the story order as much as some other reviews have mentioned. I found the way the story is told is like how a tv show is written. I want to go tell my friends and family about this book.

Nonicknameabailable

Idiots. Characters went from idiots to annoying and wanting them all to jump off a bridge to complete people.

Liv037294

Wanted to enjoy it more. i went into this book wanting to enjoy it more than i did. really i did love the individual character developments, especially Zara with her therapist. but i found it hard to take serious, in the way that no one would talk to police like that, when they are just trying to ask questions about the situation.? it made me so mad because why is every character rude (besides Estelle) and sharing weird personal details with a police officer like that? I know it becomes kind of reveled/slightly part of the plot but it’s just not realistic and could have been handled in such a different way. also the way the gender of the bank robber kept changing made it confusing to follow. i understand why the author did this, to make it more hard to predict, but it just ended up being more weird and hard to follow to me. I think this book has some amazing insights that are illustrated in such a beautiful way, but to me, these two things become overpowering in annoyance when trying to follow the plot.

Sabrina_marieeee

Amazing. This book had me deep in my emotions. The characters were so well developed anyone could connect. A must read for all.

Erikandrewerik

Comically touching and thrillingly heartfelt. Finished this in a weekend and was rather touched by the end. Backman does an intriguing job at developing characters, although it did take me a few chapters to settle into his humor. The mystery of it all added an exciting layer of narrative to the story. As someone that watches more movies than reads books, this novel was pretty cinematic.

Cutthroat fly girl

Anxious People. Read to the end! It makes it all worth your time.

Mynamessamanthu

Do recommend. First time reading in a very long time, plenty of good twists and relatable writing. I was able to guess some plot lines but very cute book.

Suhollan

Tedious. Very confusing story line. Basic premise and lack of impressive prose. I was anxious for this story to end.

Eoggioni

Witty and enjoyable until the very end! Great page turner!. Loved the playfulness of the writing throughout! Definitely recommend!

Drew49

Thought Provoking and Fun. This was a great read with many characters intertwined in way that only Fredrick Backman can do. Each detail leaves you wanting to know more... each character so well developed you feel as if you know them.

Headintheclouds1022

Loved this. Loved the writing and how the story connected characters together from beginning to end. Plenty of moments made me laugh as well as many that made me stop and think. Really enjoyable read!

Dad Gray

Anxious People. The story started off slow as the author revealed the quirky characters. As they developed, the connected emotions and general goodness in people’s hearts became the primary theme woven around an interesting getaway story. Clever story, interesting characters and beautifully written.

Hampton46

Wonderful Writing. The beginning of this book is a combination of Abbott and Costello (“Who’s on first”), The Three Stooges, Six Degrees of Separation, and Saturday Night Live. Then it flows into one of the most meaningful stories you’ll ever read. What great characters!

Totohris

Well written. Very impressed with the use of every day life experiences among the characters in a humorous manner

BelovedBrandy11

Good Book. Excellent story telling. Written in a quick-witted manner. I couldn’t put the book down, and the way it’s written helps you keep a quick reading pace. The way the author ties so many stories together is marvelous.

Yogi bear 2015

Loved this book. He just gets the simple, but complicated, human experience. This book had me laughing, crying, connecting with the compassion we have for each other. Bought it for gifts for my mother and friend.

KK_1837

There is no way to say how....absolutely brilliant Brackman is!. I have always loved books and literature....but in today’s world...it seems impossible to find a writer that can captivate you immediately! I lost my mother a month ago....I suffer from anxiety...the title caught my attention.....the book had nothing to do with what I thought. But I immediately was drawn in....in a months time (almost impossible for a teacher, Coach, mother, wife, friend...grieving child) I have read 3 of his books! I start and every time...I find myself “binge reading”. One more chapter I say..... The ability to so perfectly tell a story of smaller stories back and forth between characters, while including real life situations, lessons, feelings.....I feel speechless trying to explain the brilliance! Thank you for taking me out of reality and introducing me to it at the same time!!

Miwltawansa

Good read. I really enjoyed this book. I felt it was a little slow to get into it but I’m glad I read it. Loved the ending and all the connections

Five star read!

Absolutely Beautiful story. Brilliant author. Beautiful story. Funny, quirky, heartfelt and compassionate - I’m still trying to figure out how Blackman pulled this off. This is one I will never forget.

Tesspalk

Quirky, Funny, Moving. Reading this book I laughed a lot, and cried a little at the end. I just loved this book!

Eakjmk

Anxious People. Absolutely brilliant. Powerful. Thank you for this.

CarleeDK

Touching One-Liners again and again!. There are so many sweet excerpts from this work to keep on post-its where we’d see them every day. Maybe then we could live a more harmonious existence. This is a story about idiots. We are all idiots, and we really could afford to cut each other a little slack on the matter.

Suzieqarlington

Stick with it. At first I thought this was a silly book. Silly characters and a confusing premise. Over time, the people became real and their stories were endearing. Backman has a flirtation with suicide in this and all of his other books which I find a little disturbing but otherwise I ended up enjoying Anxious People.

Crypticcal

The first book to bring tears in years. We all need this book right now

MakiahsDad

Just read. Just had a great experience reading this. So much truth wrapped up in a funny, sad deep and meaningful story. Highly recommend but warning I had to read to it straight through. Could not stop!

BreeBone

Profound. A bit of a slow start, but I’m so happy I stuck with it. I found myself laughing and crying all the way through. So many highlights of profound quotes. Especially meaningful to anyone who has been affected by suicide.

Meaghankelly24

Thought provoking. Somehow turns the most depressing topics into comedy without minimizing the seriousness of the topic. Loved this novel.

Beinhacker

Dreck. Life is too short to read this book.

LizSweetwater

A funny book; a deep lake, bring sunscreen!. At first I enjoyed his take on being human. Then I disliked some of the people. And I was curious. Why? Why? Why? Then I liked some if the people. Then I felt worried about some of the people. Now I miss all the people.

DMHDEHJAH

We’re all idiots .... Read it all the way ... you wont regret it.

Slee112989

Loved it!. I hope they make this book into a movie!

SB in MN

I laughed, cried, and lived it!. Beautifully written book! Lessons, laughter, and the power of love! Thank you!
