Excellent book, slowest out of the series. Excellent book to my favorite Fantasy Epic series. At the end of each book in The Shardlight Chronicles it seems that the characters are vastly overpowered and essentially ‘Neo’ of their universe. I love how Sanderson still finds ways to scale back, put into perspective, or write characters that have real struggles with godlike powers. I would have to say this is probably the slowest book in the series so far, and the most depressing. Characters that we have watched become so strong overtime just fall apart or are tested beyond their limits. I am not going to lie, at times it was a hard read. That being said, it does pick up tremendously towards the end and the pay off is worth it. I definitely would recommend as a must read if you are a Sanderson fan!

Overly long, but it has good parts. Parts of the book were great, but the middle thousand pages of this book are long and boring, making this the weakest entry of the series. If you have come this far in the Stormlight archive, you’ll have to get through this book, so here are some tips if you’re struggling: It is safe to skip all of the Venli / Eshonai flashbacks. They just repeat information from the earlier books with virtually nothing new. There are a lot of these chapters, and they interrupt the more interesting parts, so skipping them will make the pace much better. Part one, two, and five contain 99% of the story (and are very good), while the middle two parts are mostly repetitive filler. If you’re in parts 3 and 4, and a chapter is dragging on (many of them do), it’s safe to skip ahead. You won’t miss anything that you can’t figure out from context later on. When you’re done, visit the Coppermind website to read about any parts that confused you. You can even get a quick summary of every chapter, which will fill in anything that you missed skipping the boring middle of the book (but don’t worry, it won’t be much). Good luck, and fingers crossed for a more consistent book 5!

Slow!!!!. The first books in this series are amazing. This one is far to slow. Worst book in the series by far.

Bringing it all together. A fantastic read as always from Brandon. It is fascinating to see how he is beginning to tie the entire Cosmere together! I can’t wait for his next Cosmere novel!

Least favorite of a very good series. This book is the least favorite of the series. The mental issues facing the characters gets old quick and there isn’t as much action in this book. Let’s hope the author improves dramatically on the next book.

Tedious. Moved slowly with no reward at the end unlike the previous books in this series that were also slow. Characters like the god swap at the end are boring and incredibly tedious which is unlike previous Sanderson books. Looks like I won’t be buying book 5 which is the first Sanderson novel I won’t read. Will have to rethink any future novels in other series as well as the invisible hand of the Cosmere isn’t interesting but quite boring.

So long…. I like a long book. I’ve read a dozen of Sanderson’s books. This one was longer than any other and had less payoff. It’s still good and moved the story forward, but the ending wasn’t a big enough payoff for all the work it took getting there.

A Fun Read, But Not As Good As Previous Books. This was one of Brandon’s slower books, I think, but if you like a slow, savory plot with a steady build up, then this is the book for you. I really enjoyed seeing all the character arcs and development of the plot, and the payoffs were perfect. That being said, I did I feel at times the narrative wasn’t as well put together as the previous stormlight books, and I don’t entirely agree with the page count, as I feel like Brandon could have cut maybe 75-100 pages if he wanted to to speed up the story. I loved Navani though. Looking forward to Stormlight 5!

Spectacular. It’s only been a day since i’ve finished it so I’ll need some time to think about it but I think this might be my favorite Stormlight book. King Sanderson did that. 👏🏻

Not sure if it’s my favorite in the series, but definitely up there Some parts felt a bit long... but it was really great overall! Sooo excited for the next book🤪! Ending was like ahhh 😨! Disappointing. I’m sure this review will be seen by few and appreciated by even fewer, but I felt the need to write it. I’ve read almost all of Sanderson’s books and he’s one of my favorite authors. That said, this book was perhaps the most uninspired of any work he’s done to date. His focus on the emotional depth and journeys of characters has morphed into psychotherapy. Everyone has a hang up that must be dealt with over thousands of pages in agonizing detail. Also, as of late anyone of the dozens of important characters have an invisible shield that guarantees their safety. SPOILER - The fact that the tower was taken and (almost) no one of import was killed shows us the authors personal attachments to the characters may be impeding the balance needed to showcase a battle of good and evil, protagonist vs antagonist. I hope more people speak out to him via reviews, everyone giving him 5 stars and a false sense of creating yet another “masterpiece” will not help his development or the story.

Wow.. Brandon Sanderson continues to impress and improve as a writer. Lost all sense of time while reading, almost like I was a kid again. Although it does start a little slow on my opinion.

Come for Adolin, stay for Teft. Shallans still the worst

Boring. A whole lot of hand wringing and angst. Yawn.

Not as good as the others.. The book just revolves around everyone having the same inner turmoil. Author projecting his own feelings on every character?

Not a good effort. Sanderson is great, but this book was rushed, plain and simple. The story’s structure is not nearly as coherent as other books in the series. The themes and character arcs also took no new directions, and their struggles and eventual successes have all started becoming formulaic and easily expected. Simply put, these two majors flaws made it hard to read, and even harder to care. Please don’t rush your books, Mr. Sanderson. Don’t ruin this series like the wheel of time 5-10 were ruined.

Amazing - Truely. Read as much of the Cosmere before reading this and you will enjoy it that much more. So many questions answered. Life before Death.

Brandon Sanderson-Productions. Team work, makes the dream work. Thank you for your dreams. Stories and songs gave me strength to stand in the face of death many times over. My memories faded to preserve my soul. Like memories of light, they have returned to heal a fractured past. It was terrifying at first, but with Kaladins help, I am “whole” again.

Stormlight at it’s best.. The spoilers-free reviews of this book were the reason for me to pick up this series in the first place, and after reading the first 3 books and 2 novellas I was ready to have my mind blown. That probably was the reason the first 3/5 of this book felt slow to me, but because I knew Sanderson wouldn’t disappoint I kept reading, not skipping anything, and got all the feelings I was hoping to get in this book, the same ones that i’m getting used to having while reading about this beautifully created universe, Thank you Brandon.

Huzzah for character development!!!. Once again, Sanderson has created a stunning addition to the Stormlight series. Like the books (full sized novels, not the novellas) before it, we dove into the backstory of a character: Venli. We also were transported into Shadesmar, visiting the Honorspren capital, which was really cool. And the climax… oh… it was amazing. I’m not entirely sure whether I liked this book’s climax better, or Oathbringer’s better. I think I’m not sure because they’re great in different ways. I’ll be honest, I actually cried. Not because I was sad, though that almost happened too, but because there is such a touching scene. And then Kaladin gets some major character development! Yay! *dances around throwing confetti* Yes, he’s my favorite character. But oh ho ho. You thought I was done. NOPE! The climax was crazy, but just WAIT until the epilogue… And then the book ends. And I now have to wait. Oh well. I’m sure the next book will be stunning too, so I can be patient. Sanderson may be an INCREDIBLY fast writer, but he has other books to work on (such as Secret Projects #3 and #4) and these books are LONG. Super great though! I LOVED it!

Storming Amazing. Best book series I’ve ever read. Can’t recommend enough. Brandon Sanderson delivers yet again with his fourth entry of the stormlight archives!

Wow. The twists and turns through this book were amazing and we got to see some of the best character development I have yet to see from an author.

No words can express how good!!. Started over and reread books 1,2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, then book 4. Started June 6th, just finished today July 22nd. I caught so much more rereading before going to book 4. About 5000 pages in all and I need more:) All of Sanderson’s books are fantastic, this series though is my favorite series I’ve ever read. He does not rush to build his characters, the world building is fantastic! I have never been so invested in such a large number of characters! I have decided not to discuss details of this book or series as I just don’t want to for those that have not read it yet. I will say this, I read 92 books last year, all in sci-fi, fantasy, epic genre. This series is number 1 on my list for all time! Just a work of art Mr. Sanderson, thank you! Happy reading!

Wonderful. What can I say? It’s Sanderson in top form for this chapter in the stormlight archive. Rarely do you have the pleasure of reading a series that remains as fresh and enthralling as this is. My only regret is that I now must wait for the next book to publish. I will be counting the minutes.

Sanderson is Brilliant, But Not Today. I have read everything written by Mr. Sanderson. My respect for him started with his finish of The Wheel of Time series. In that series, I felt as like Robert Jordan would at times lose his pace and delve into such detail I became bored and frustrated as a reader. This is precisely how I feel reading this installment. I LOVED the precious books in this series and I’m about 20% into this book and I just couldn’t care less about these characters. NOTHING HAPPENS .... and it is maddening. Therefore, my plan is only to read this on my next flight as a way to fall asleep. At least this way I will get some utility from the purchase. I will update this review in 2022 when I get around to this book again. FINISHED THE BOOK ... moved from 2 to 3 stars. Part One was deadly boring but the remaining 75% of the book was good.

Absolutely impossibly irrefutably ingenious. Poor Mr cephalopod, but you should read the book.

Disappointing. Got better by the end but reading this book was like trying to slog through Game of Thrones. Love the series but this book was just meh.

Excellent Storytelling. As a Soldier I think Sanderson does as well as any author at capturing that warrior spirit and the trials that can come from that. I admittedly got a little bogged down with the intricacies of “fabrial science.” But the characters are what keeps me going. Sanderson has made me care about them and intrigued me with new characters and the slow reveal of a greater universe than any of our characters were aware of before. And you have to respect an author that can get you into a riveting endgame sequence that is 300 pages long. The book also makes you think about why these events are occurring more than any before. Masterfully done and much appreciated!

For those who don’t like fantasy.... I get it, you don’t want weird spells and elves flying around using stupid magic, you need more grounded stories. This is a series that has a fantastical setting but each character has so much growth and wisdom, that the fantasy aspect becomes secondary. I love the mythology, but it would be nothing without these fantastic characters.

Wow.... I have no words to describe how satisfied I am after reading this book. I got the chills as I read the book, multiple times, because of the skill and passion of this author. What a blessing it is to enjoy this child of his mind. Looking forward to more to come in the cosmere. This book obviously opens up a door for exploring of worlds interacting with each other. Thank you, Brandon and Tor for the most satisfying read I have experienced yet.

Mind boggling. Not going to say too much. Brando Sando has a galaxy sized brain. Navani and Raboniel were playing 5D chess, Shallan and Adolin had no idea what was actually going on, and Kaladin was well...Kaladin. The way the Cosmere begins to intertwine is unbelievable and the implications in all the Cosmere books to come can only be imagined.

Meh. Wow, he’s stretching to make more books out of a story that should be much shorter. Long painful boring sections hundreds of pages long where the characters wallow in their issues and flounder in their inability to make headway on their daddy issues, self guilt, inadequacy, etc. The beginning and the end were good, the 600 pages in between were barely worth skimming.

Really too languid. I’ve really loved this series so far but this one just feels stuck in time. There’s a major war going on but it seems there is plenty of time for characters to wonder about the same things over and over without figuring anything out, rehashing the same feelings over and over without changing anything. It’s an interesting world chock full of interesting characters but most of the time we see them hiding in dark rooms feeling moody. Hope the pace picks up again in future installments.

90% annoying. 10% awesome.. Shallan is the worst, and the first third of the book is mostly her. She should be dead. She pretends to have experience at spying and soldiering, then uses that fake experience to beat REAL spies and warriors. It's really stupid, and if the world worked the way it should, she'd be dead. But she's a Mary Sue, so she just keeps winning while I roll my eyes and skim her terrible chapters. Brandon somehow made the worst character in his books MORE annoying in this one. I hate this character, and not in the good Lannister kind of way. Also, nobody in a believable world would like her. Intentionally misunderstanding what people say in an effort to be clever is annoying, not funny, and nobody in any of these books reacts to her how they should. I can't stress enough how much I hate that Brandon has sullied these books with this garbage character. That being said, Dalinar, Kaladin, Navani, and Adolin before he married Mary Sue, are amazing. Taravangian is awesome. Even Venli and Eshonai grew on me, though I find flashback chapters lack suspense and frustrate me because they don't push the story forward.

Wow. The only reason I’m giving this four stars is because it felt a little slow at times. Again, it is the Stormlight archive and it continues to be the epic story it was designed to be all the way back in the first book. This book has so many revelations and points where you begin to question everything you’ve read so far. Sanderson also continues to deliver with his incredible characters. Kaladin’s portrayal of depression is a standout in the book and is both beautiful and really heartbreaking. The ending of the book leaves me theorizing for the next chapter of this amazing story.

Breathtaking. Storms. I read this book in 3 days. It’s incredible of course, but you already know that - it’s book 4 of the Stormlight Archive! Jump in!
