A woman's birthday party takes a dark turn in a poignant, heart-stopping new novel from the reigning queen of suspense, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of Behind Closed Doors, The Breakdown, and Bring Me Back.

“A heartbreaking page-turner that will have you up at night reading just one more chapter.” —Catherine Steadman, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Something in the Water

“The phenomenal B.A. Paris has done it again! I devoured The Dilemma in one sitting—it grabbed me from the very first page and wouldn’t let go until I’d finished. Secrets, guilt, shame and heartbreak—this story has it all in spades.”—Sandie Jones, New York Times bestselling author of The Other Woman

Knowing the truth will destroy her. Keeping it secret will destroy him.

It’s Livia’s 40th birthday, and her husband Adam is throwing her the party of a lifetime to make up for the wedding they never had. Everyone she loves will be there, except her daughter Marnie, who’s studying abroad. But Livia is secretly glad Marnie won’t be there.

Livia has recently uncovered a secret about their daughter which, if revealed, will shake the foundation of their family to its core. She needs to tell Adam, but she’s waiting until the party is over so they can have this last happy time together.

Adam, meanwhile, has his own surprise for Livia: he’s arranged for Marnie to secretly fly back for the party. But before Marnie arrives, Adam hears some terrible news. Now he too is faced with a dilemma: Does he share what he's learned with his wife? Is hiding the truth the same as telling a lie? And how far are Adam and Livia willing to go to protect the ones they love—and give each other a last few hours of happiness?

Long, drawn out sadness. The back and forth recap of events from each character’s perspective became tedious. I began skimming paragraphs just to get to the point. The story was a long, drawn out heartbreak with no tangible conclusion.

Shelley1221

Terrible. Poorly written, boring and predicable. I did not waste my time finishing it. It is troubling that this is a bestseller.

Laura Hinton

Frustrating. I love all other books by this author, but this one truly misses the mark. Each chapter was a build up to the same conclusion - over and over and over again. I started to skim the pages due to there being no fundamental change to the story, just more inner monologue saying the same thing. Nothing thrilling about it. Will continue to read this author, but will leave this off of my recommendations list!

Ok. I loved behind closed doors but this book was just ok. Quick read but not that interesting.

Sydni12345

Disappointing. Way too many times around the barn for such a disappointing end.

Instagirl66

Great read. Lots of negative reviews on here but I thought the book was amazing!

Not my favorite. Good character development at the beginning, but the ending is meh.

A rollercoaster of emotions!. Livia has been planning her 40th birthday party for the past twenty years. After being robbed of her dream wedding, it was the very least she deserved. The day has finally arrived and everything is coming together perfectly, except for the constant nagging of the secret she has been keeping from her husband, Adam. As it turns out, Adam is keeping a secret of his own and has no earthly idea how he is going to keep it to himself until after the party. They are grappling with the same dilemma: tell their spouse or let them enjoy the much anticipated party. After all, these secrets could tear their family and friends apart. Wow. I feel like my heart just rode an elevator from my throat to the pit of my stomach on a loop. In the beginning I had no idea what direction this book was going in but as soon as I found out, I was choking with anxiety. The more I read, the more gut-wrenching it was. Admittedly, I was terribly annoyed with Livia. I understand not sharing with anyone else, but Adam? She can keep something from her husband for several weeks, but open right up to her mother 20yrs after her parents disowned her? As for Adam, I have zero understanding how he suffered through that alone for an entire day. I see no scenario where I could have put on a brave face as he did, even while falling apart. In the end, it was Josh who surprised me the most. His character development allowed me to go from feeling simply "meh" about him to "man, that is one good kid." A surprisingly strong (and unexpected) character, at least to me. Initially, I felt it was a bit callous to end with another party. Ultimately, I understand Josh's desire to do so and can appreciate that it brought everything full circle. Many thanks to the publisher for sending me an ARC in return for an honest review. B.A. Paris is one of my absolute favorite authors and I jumped with glee like a child when I got it. I then proceeded to read it immediately, in one sitting. While this is a far cry from her typical works, I was glued to it right off the bat just the same.

Excellent Read. One of the best books I’ve read, and I read a book a week! Started from first page being engrossed in story. Read in one day. Couldn’t put it down.

Redstar

Disappointed. Let down by one of my favorite authors! Shallow characters and expected more of a psychological thriller from this author. This is more of a tear jerker family drama that fell flat. Tedious to read as the story is dragged out.

SuzeT08

Meh. I usually love B.A. Paris but this book was a let down. It just dragged on and there was no real development for pages on end. The plot line was interesting in the beginning but then nothing else happened.

Jessiep813

Didn’t get very far. This was extremely boring. I did the audio and it didn’t grab me at all so I’m giving up

Alasia Anne

Expected better from B.A. Paris. I excited waited for this book and once I started reading I kept waiting for the twist or interesting plot development but it never came.

Hardcore Book Lover

Another incredible read!!. This one will keep you on the edge of your seat! I couldn’t put the book down. What an awesomely heart-wrenching story.

Gypsytank

Loved. I was hooked from the beginning to the end. Great summer read.

Sincerelyashhhhh

Not the greatest read. It was a very hard read. I couldn’t finish it to be honest. I got to page 363 out of 485. I was frustrated for the most part. The constant overthinking every single chapter, the waiting to tell their partners the news that kept getting dragged on for mostly the entire book. It was a bore of a read and I don’t really recommend.

Abercrombie8765

Character Drive. How many secrets can one family keep? A family drama told mostly over one day in back and forth views from Livia and Adam. Livia is turning 40 and has been planning her party for over 20 years to make up for her lack of a wedding. This is a departure from B A Paris’ previous thriller novels. This is definitely a family drama novel and not a mystery/thriller. I’m giving this 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

Do not recommend.. I want to start by saying I have absolutely loved every other book B.A. Paris has written. However, this book left much to be desired. It was hard for me to finish it because the story was so drawn out. This book could’ve been 100 pages. There was no mystery or thrill like I was expecting after reading her other books. I would skip this one.

An emotional rollercoaster. It’s suspenseful, heartbreaking and somehow uplifting all at the same time. A really great read

Raspberrytoes

The dilemma. Starts off interestingly… but then it drags on and on. The reaction of the father to a tragedy is unrealistic…almost ridiculous. And the self cantered mother… painful. Are people really so immature?.? And after a year everything is almost normal? No way. This author has done better.
