NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The #1 New York Times bestselling author of World War Z is back with “the Bigfoot thriller you didn’t know you needed in your life, and one of the greatest horror novels I’ve ever read” (Blake Crouch, author of Dark Matter and Recursion).

FINALIST FOR THE LOCUS AWARD

As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined . . . until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing—and too earth-shattering in its implications—to be forgotten. In these pages, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it. Kate’s is a tale of unexpected strength and resilience, of humanity’s defiance in the face of a terrible predator’s gaze, and, inevitably, of savagery and death.

Yet it is also far more than that.

Because if what Kate Holland saw in those days is real, then we must accept the impossible. We must accept that the creature known as Bigfoot walks among us—and that it is a beast of terrible strength and ferocity.

Part survival narrative, part bloody horror tale, part scientific journey into the boundaries between truth and fiction, this is a Bigfoot story as only Max Brooks could chronicle it—and like none you’ve ever read before.

Great book. This was a page turner and a fun read. Very enjoyable.

Good Bigfoot novel. The book was pretty good at showing what a Bigfoot attack could happen

Bigchile300

captivating and a great take. Just finished the book and it was great. Did not expect the idea of big foot to be expanded in this manner. I had no expectation on the story so when it ended, it was all unexpected. Highly reccomend.

Wonderful!. This was not what I was expecting and I loved it. Playing out almost like a found footage movie (it’s a journal), the storyteller jumps back and forth between interviews and the journal, providing necessary detail and the necessary moment. Two solid chunks of reading and I’d finished the book, and to be honest, I have a new found fear of Bigfoot (if it exists).

Sprocketjockey

Fantastic. Enjoyed it, builds up nicely & enjoyed the story

Loved Devolution. Can’t wait for more…and the movie.

Witch-at-Heart

This book is absolutely terrifyingly fantastic!. Firstt I want to start by saying I am a hug fan of Max Brooks and having read his previous works I understood what to expect from his writing style before I started this one. Max Brooks does not write in a typical novel fashion. MAX Brooks usually uses a third-person point of view with a narrator to tells us about what's happening in the story by showing us the thoughts and feelings of the characters. If you are familiar with one of his previous books "World War Z" Max Brooks proves he knows how to wield this remarkably flexible and very powerful approach to narration. And he is a master! Max Brooks uses a mighty pen as effectively as the sharpest sword. Expertly weaving in close to show the raw emotions of the character then pulling away to make the overall story come to life in an after action style perspective. This perspective makes everything hauntingly vivid. The setting, the isolation, the complete terror. Max Brooks has a gift for taking the bedtime ghost stories/urban legends of yesterday and making it all so plausibly horrifying. He went a different angle with this one so it's just a diary account of what happened to a green off the grid ultra modern rich person retreat gone wrong. So the first 25% - and at first I was like huh not what I expected - No horror. It is what would be typical... Dinner parties moving in, trying to live in the woods but getting food delivered by drones... Perfect life, perfect wifi you get the picture right?? So next gen. safe, boring, too perfect. Then bam apocalypse now!! A chain of events sets off an unanticipated series of catastrophic events that changes a small community forever. And that's just the semi-normal natural disaster stuff. Let's just say it ramps up. Admittedly this may not (given world events) be the best book to read right now. If your already on edge or aren't a true horror fan then read all the reviews n than read the reviews for his other books haha but Wow... I mean just Wow! I can truly say I am not in a hurry to meet a Sasquatch anytime soon. If you loved World War Z. THE BOOK because it's vastly different than the movie (Although I enjoyed it too. It is most definitely not the same). Then you will love this book as well. It was a fast paced addictive read. I couldn't stop reading - thinking. Yep it kept me up in all the ways. First the I couldn't put it down. Then the creep/scare factor kept me awake. I mean did I ever ponder what a Bigfoot attack might be like? Probably Never and there it is right there... As I shudder... Yes the descriptions of the savagery are that realistic. Out of all the monsters in the dark. What might actually hide in the woods... Bigfoots... Bigfoot? Sasquatch, Yeti Whatever... Hopefully not a thing cuz that was some realist scary story dynamics. This is a roller-coaster that is a full speed ahead terrifyingly scary. #PureHorror #AmazingRead. Seriously if true horror is not your thing this may not be for you because this is incredibly descriptive and brutal in it's presentation. Um, did I already mention that? Cuz I'm trying to be clear. The book is not for the faint of heart. I LOVED Kate's narration. At first I was like wow she is so obsessive and high strung. She legit needs to live in the woods just to cope. Her mind constantly dwells on every aspect of every detail. It would be exhausting to overthink all the aspects of the minutiae that con-volutes our days. But who knew. In the apocalypse maybe that's what you need. Tough, raw, gritty character always thinking, planning and trying to survive. If ever I wished for a sequel then this is one of those times. Special thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing/Ballantine Books for sending me this incredible ARC in exchange for an honest review. I truly absolutely loved it soooooo much!!!

Slow burn, massive explosion.. I started Devolution because of my love of Brooks’ other work. As with how he wrote World War Z, Brooks builds up plenty of foreshadowing. Something new is his character building. At first the pseudo-hippy “new green” community members are almost all awful but they (mostly) develop into likable people. Other reviews have said this book is over the top with gore and violence but if you’re already a fan of horror and Brooks this one won’t phase you. My only objection is the “found journal” format of the bulk of the story, a single narrator for the meat of the book left me needing more.

Great book. Very well written. Only took a star because I’m not really into this type fiction. I had to listen with it being about Bigfoot. It surpassed my expectation with a more logical approach and great character growth. But as my library is mostly fantasy, romance, and historical fiction it still was an adjustment for me. I am not at all disappointed about buying this novel, it kept me listening and was great storytelling.

Stache or Burn

Devolution: Cautionary tale of a post covid time. Where to start… If you’re a familiar with Max Brook’s writing then rest assure you’ll have a good time. It’s gripping and never let’s go of your focus. The horrors of the violent behavior of the main threat keep you turning the page, however the idealogical horror of what the characters and who we are in modern times is what stays with you after you finish. This is one of those rare instances where art imitates real world. Without spoiling, the pin drop realization of how defenseless and unprepared we are for real crisis, will make you think and fear your own emergency readiness and actual knowledge of survival skills.

Max Wouldn’t Buy this Book. Max is paying for the one or two good reviews. Really this could be the worst book of 2020. Spent just long enough on the Times list to say it was a best seller. I blinked and then it was gone

Satanicpuppy

Can’t stand Bigfoot, but loved this book. Well-crafted and suspenseful. Starts slow, but builds nicely.

OHairyHood

Good read. Captivating and entertaining

Sprouticus

Devolution. Writing seemed a bit lazy.

Dsiduousaardvrk

Worth the read!. Lately, I’ve been really taken by first-person narrative books like this. Each journal entry gives you just enough to keep reading as you piece the story together. This was a great story - not too far-fetched. Will definitely having me listening to my surroundings more closely next time I go camping!

Bigmur32

Loved it. Great read!

Lori12lee

Misleading. This book is fiction but the summary makes it sound like nonfiction.

IamTheWonderpony

Literally couldn’t put it down. I loved World War Z so I was excited to read this. Slow to start, but once it snowballed I couldn’t put it down. Absolutely fantastic book!

Lainie9999

Dull. I don’t get why all the reviews are saying that this is such a page turner. I was turning pages, alright… trying to find some action. The whole first part of this book is boring diary entries, and interviews with people who have nothing to say. I kept wondering: when does the attack come?

Ac96

Fun/thrilling read. ….. once you get to the Bigfoot stuff .

Yeesh. A clumsy mess, and especially disappointing considering how good World War Z was.

Killer Read. I did not put this book down until it was done! Loved every word! Will a movie destroy it? Nahhhh, c’mon Hollywood get this done!!
