Untamed by Glennon Doyle
Untamed by Glennon Doyle Book Summary
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • OVER TWO MILLION COPIES SOLD! “Packed with incredible insight about what it means to be a woman today.”—Reese Witherspoon (Reese’s Book Club Pick)
In her most revealing and powerful memoir yet, the activist, speaker, bestselling author, and “patron saint of female empowerment” (People) explores the joy and peace we discover when we stop striving to meet others’ expectations and start trusting the voice deep within us.
NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY O: The Oprah Magazine • The Washington Post • Cosmopolitan • Marie Claire • Bloomberg • Parade • “Untamed will liberate women—emotionally, spiritually, and physically. It is phenomenal.”—Elizabeth Gilbert, author of City of Girls and Eat Pray Love
This is how you find yourself.
There is a voice of longing inside each woman. We strive so mightily to be good: good partners, daughters, mothers, employees, and friends. We hope all this striving will make us feel alive. Instead, it leaves us feeling weary, stuck, overwhelmed, and underwhelmed. We look at our lives and wonder: Wasn’t it all supposed to be more beautiful than this? We quickly silence that question, telling ourselves to be grateful, hiding our discontent—even from ourselves.
For many years, Glennon Doyle denied her own discontent. Then, while speaking at a conference, she looked at a woman across the room and fell instantly in love. Three words flooded her mind: There She Is. At first, Glennon assumed these words came to her from on high. But she soon realized they had come to her from within. This was her own voice—the one she had buried beneath decades of numbing addictions, cultural conditioning, and institutional allegiances. This was the voice of the girl she had been before the world told her who to be. Glennon decided to quit abandoning herself and to instead abandon the world’s expectations of her. She quit being good so she could be free. She quit pleasing and started living.
Soulful and uproarious, forceful and tender, Untamed is both an intimate memoir and a galvanizing wake-up call. It is the story of how one woman learned that a responsible mother is not one who slowly dies for her children, but one who shows them how to fully live. It is the story of navigating divorce, forming a new blended family, and discovering that the brokenness or wholeness of a family depends not on its structure but on each member’s ability to bring her full self to the table. And it is the story of how each of us can begin to trust ourselves enough to set boundaries, make peace with our bodies, honor our anger and heartbreak, and unleash our truest, wildest instincts so that we become women who can finally look at ourselves and say: There She Is.
Untamed shows us how to be brave. As Glennon insists: The braver we are, the luckier we get.

Just incredible. Loved every story. Must read!
Untamed. Such a good book! I cried so many times because Glennon was able to capture my exact thoughts and feelings in countless situations through her own experiences. It was eye opening, brave and courageous and truly life changing.
Annoying. Author seems to be the kind of person who finds a woke story in every minute detail in life. The over glorification of feelings and prioritizing oneself is small minded and an oversimplified philosophy. Not all feminism is created equal, this is exactly the kind of toxic feminism we don’t need.
Awesome. I loved this book it’s thought provoking and insightful. Awesome read😊
Second Read even better than my first.. I have read this book again, a year after the first time. It’s even better the second time… Gained wisdom each read. Mesmerizing, inspiring prose, that is witty honest, and very familiar. What she says, I think most of us have felt. Glennon, is able to put it all into words with endearing honesty and freedom..
untamed. This book is like a long conversation with a good friend: sometimes deeply connecting, sometimes curious, different, disagreeing, but overall very real.
Speechless. Raw. True. Beautiful writing. Loved every second of being indulged in this book 🙏🏼🤍
Every woman needs to read this. I can’t say anymore than that
Oh my…. This one takes herself way too seriously. Haven’t all of us women tried on different personas? Wiggled ourselves into different clothes, hair, makeup, men/women and marriages (if we be so incompatible). I only got through the first couple of chapters, (should have got the preview) so it may have improved. But I’m almost 70, and sure, there are regrets in my younger years. The important thing is not to dwell on them. Become someone you love.
Emphatically deep and simple. It is no surprise that all those that said this was a great read.
Untamed-It’s honest!. I highly recommend.
A must read for every woman. I was nervous I wouldn’t be able to relate to her/ this book because I’m 20 and straight but it was highly recommended by so many people I gave it a try. It was impossible to put down and such a good read. The core of her message is applicable to all women and I’ve been recommending it to every woman in my life. Loved it!!!
Awesome. Love
Horrid slog. Horrible, endless, condescending preaching from a rich, privileged white American woman who sees herself as a victim-turned-victorious-fighter against the horrors she suffered (paranoid about staying skinny and pretty, run-of-the-mill addiction to mild drugs and alcohol, or staying in a marriage just for the kids). People have suffered and endured far worse and preach far less.
Overhyped. Read anything else.. Not sure why this book has been hyped up so much. The first section was decent. But, then it turns very preachy (even though it’s a memoir??). The 5 page brief essay on racism in the third section -to stay relevant- was incredibly insulting.
Glen on knows all. I did not like this book at all. I really had to force myself to finish the second half. Glenn on is very preachy (not about religion) and comes off like a “know-it-all”. She touches on all the very important social issues of the current times but doesn’t say anything new. It comes off like she’s just wanting to be known as “woke”. She acts like she invented the ideas of meditation, intuition, integrity, and so many more. We all know these thing exist so for her to rename them and claim them as new is strange. While I agree with most of her ideas and opinions, she doesn’t offer any new perspective and her short stories are boring. She seems like she would be a very bossy person. Someone who just stares at you and says “trust me I know” as if you don’t also know. But then she preaches about living life how you know you should. Contradicting. This is perhaps a good book for older generations who are “stuck in their ways” about social issues and family structure. I found it boring.
Truth. Plain and simple truth.
Stunning from start to finish. Glennon Doyle has helped me sink into my knowing more than I ever have. Her writing is a feast for the mind. She writes with such vivid emotion and logic and clarity. I hope one day I get to write the way she does. With conviction and fearlessness.
This book 🌟. This helped me so much, I’m terrible at reviews but this is a must read if you’re trying to find yourself and hear another persons story. Her story is so true and so worth reading. Brought tears to my eyes.
The Best. The first book that ever truly spoke to my soul. I feel validated, understood, and human. Not broken. I always knew I was a cheetah.
Untamed feedback. This author has retained the highly moralistic self-righteous voice of the model Christian wife and mother. I found this to be didactic and overly self involved providing less of the magic than what appears in some spots along the way when she is more honest and not self-aware. It lacks humor and is often shouting orders at the reader to follow. My favorite part is at the end when she finally talks about someone other than herself and showcases Abby. This reveals her own foibles and shows that she actually has something to learn from others.
Finding my knowing. I have never felt so heard while reading a non fiction book. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone!
Becoming Untamed. I love how relatable this book is! An easy and quick read about everything I’ve ever felt.
Untamed. READ THIS BOOK! This book blew my mind. The way Glennon talks in metaphors speaks to me and my brain. I felt understood by her. This book is phenomenal, and I think everyone should read it.
This books has absolutely fallacious theolgo. This book is universalist and tries to convince you that you are GOD. The inner knowing is demonic in nature. Please avoid this book
A story of becoming a truer version of you.. Evolution is my word for the season. Glennon’s story of becoming, of “I am”, spoke strongly to me for I have always fought the Knowing and tried to fit in with what was right at that moment. When I was in my 20s, I married knowing he was not a man that I would be able grow with. I walked away when I was ready. When I was 30, I became engaged to the man who impregnated me to keep me around. I walked away when I was ready. Now, I am 42. On my 40th birthday I declared that this decade was for me. Glennon’s story resonates true to that declaration.
Favorite book of all time. This book is just phenomenal! It had made me feel unpowered I highly recommended this for people that need to know if they are worth it or if there looking for a great book!
Glennon ‘s insight. Glennon Doyle’s insights on life. Going from Christian wife and mother blogger to self realization and understanding. Well written.
Great book. Really honest and makes you take a deep look at yourself
.. Inspiring!
Better than I imagined. Multiple friends have recommended this book but I was taking my time getting around to reading it. I wish I wouldn’t have waited. Glennon drops some gems that will resonate with me forever. This book is about change, love, growth, and the permission to set yourself free from so many of the burdens of life.
Life changing!. I thought I was immune to the taming, the bigotry, the misogyny. This thought provoking book gave me the opportunity to examine my life, my beliefs, my training and my taming. I am so thankful for the women that are courageous enough to be vulnerable, live in the arena as Brené would say, and lead the way for the rest of us.
Awesome. My favorite book so far!!! Made me think about my life in a different way.
Untamed. Phenomenal. Breathtaking. Must read!
Remember you’re a GD cheetah.. This is a book women who don’t know what they need need to read. Period. I felt energy and inspiration I haven’t felt in years. Thank you, Glennon.
Empowering. "Untamed" by Glennon Doyle is a book that inspires people to be true to themselves and live their lives without fear of judgment or societal expectations. The book shares Glennon's journey of self-discovery, where she challenges norms and expectations that society has placed on us. Her story is relatable and inspiring, encouraging readers to question and redefine their lives. The book is filled with wisdom, vulnerability, and moments of profound insight. Glennon's message of embracing our true selves, listening to our instincts, and living authentically is both freeing and empowering. "Untamed" is a life-changing read that motivates readers to break free from societal constraints and live a life that is true to themselves.
Very relatable. This book has taken many words out of my mouth. Thought I could never put into words. I felt alone and like the only one with certain thoughts but now I know I know I’m not alone. Reading this made me feel like I’ve known Glennon all my life.
I love this book!. I learned a lot from reading this and I recommend anyone who identifies as a woman reads this book 10/10 love love love
untamed. not relatable at all. very boring.
another woke lecture. Glennon Doyle is a gifted writer. Unfortunately I couldn’t stomach the woke, predictable “i deserve to be happy”, “everything’s about me”, and the “everyones a racist” chapters. For someone who wants to transcend judgement by she certainly casts judgement on others. Her hypocrisy is so sickening, I couldn’t finish the book.
Self help-ish. Cliche. I wanted to like it.. I can’t.
So many gems!. I’ve never read a book that I could relate so much to as a woman. Her writing is refreshing and inviting. I’m looking forward to read more from Glennon
Love. Life changing
Wish I could read this again & again. Love this book, such a fast read.
So perfect, just what I needed to hear. Sooo good! It’s like she knows all the things about me that I do not know about myself. This book is exactly what we need in this world right now. If only the capital patriarchy would read it.
Self help-ish memoir. Easy to read, good but wouldn’t read it twice.
Cheerful but Choppy. Lovely upbeat book full of insight learned through experience. It did feel like the stories jumped around as it is more of a collection of experiences than a single story. But, very enjoyable to read. Very positive and encouraging.
Grateful. I feel like this book was written for me. To have the same thoughts and feelings, to know that it’s ok.
Could not put this down. Would recommend this book to anyone who needs a practical and spiritual perspective on what it is to be a multifaceted woman in 2021. The chapters are philosophical, theoretical, and mystical. Easy to read and impossible to not feel every moment described. Beautifully written, necessary for all
A wonderful combination of deep truths & fun. Every anecdote taught me something about myself - past me, current me, and future me - as well as about society & family. Glennon does not preach. She reveals. And as she reveals what she sees, it helps me to see not only what she sees but also what I see and what I want to see.

A must read. I wanted to read it again before I even finished it. It made me feel seen and understood.
Revelation/Revolution. Wow! Came across this book while searching for my own answers and needing guidance...within the first 100 pages, I knew I was meant to read this book! I didn’t want to put it down. The openness and directness with which Ms Doyle has written, has left me in awe. She has written, things I’ve felt and wanted to believe in my gut, for so many years, in the vocabulary or words I wasn’t able to find nor could express! Her incredible journey of self-discovery and insight has given me the courage to explore my own “KNOWING”. Thank you for sharing this with me and the world!
Must read!. I read Untamed like a cheetah in the wild, and then I read it all over again! Amazingly beautiful, raw and real. Well done Glennon!
Amazing. Loved this book! She spoke so much truth and I loved her focus on your inner knowing 💖
I’ve never felt so seen. This book was “wow” and “ah-haaaa” moment after “ah-HAAAA” moment. It perfectly illustrated in fantastic imagery and stories, feelings and questions and frustrations hat have plagued me my whole life. A must read for any person who has ever felt boxed inappropriately. A must read for every human, I think.
Untamed. Extraordinary, insightful, beautiful, heart-warming and truly inspiring!!!!
The PERFECT book for my year of 50!. Amazing insights and wonderful stories. Some parts will speak directly to you and others may not. Regardless, you will learn and grow.
Repetitive But Deep. I read this very quickly as there are parts that can be skipped over due to repetition. I felt inspired by her experiences and her choices. I loved the honesty. Laugh out loud funny, very relatable. Easy reading but great depth.
Untamed. Thoughtful, playful and raw. Just what we need, when we need it.
Repetitive. Good writer, nice thoughts but was too repetitive and religious for me to truly enjoy.
Was interesting but repetitive. It is a very inspiring book with lots to think about. I had gotten half way through before there is so many ways you can say “do what you want in life” before it gets repetitive. Could not finish it. Written lovely, but got bored with the same concept written in different words.
Most meaningful book I’ve read. Self empowering Liberating Spiritual Parental Sexual and intimate Hilarious Triumphant Beautiful
Beautiful and inspiring. Untamed has left me in awe. My mind was blown with the life lessons each chapter had to offer. A must read for sure, again and again.
Easy to see why it’s so loved. The writing style was casual and made it comfortable to read, while forming a quick bond with the author, however the messages within were not new to me, nor were they motivating for me. I can see how many could relate and use her words to inspire change in their own lives, however. All in all, not a book I will re-read, but for the right person it can be a good recommendation.

Must Read Absolutely Love. I love this book. My eyes are glued to the book and it has been a very fun, inspirational, and educational way to spend my quarantine. The book has an amazing message that I think all women but especially young women should read. I’m not someone who reads or who gets lost in books. Ask any of my past English teachers They will back me up on this but this book is an amazing read and I can’t put it down. I have been and will continue to tell everyone how amazing this book is.
Untamed. This book was everything I needed. During this pandemic, we are able to just be more than we have in our lives previously. I would read a chapter and need to stop to write or journal or discuss it with others and sometimes just cry. It’s brilliant and will be on my nightstand for years to come.
Unimpressed. This book was not my cup of tea. The flow was choppy and the concepts, while valuable, were often obscured by the stories used to illustrate them.
Don’t bother. Disappointing. Don’t waste your money.
Life Altering Awesomeness!. I don’t consider myself a “book person” ... and neither do my friends ... but when all I can talk about is this fabulous, courageous, humorous guide to answering major life questions and learning amazing parenting skills ... while a full-forced pandemic virus is sweeping the planet ... my friends realized I must have found a gem. Now my whole tribe and I are soaking up all the wisdom, inspiration, and truth. This is one of the most grounded and empowering books about how to cope, remain true to yourself, live in integrity, and succeed in true happiness I’ve ever read. So grateful that I happened into it on its release date. This was everything I needed in the world today!
perfect. everything i’ve ever needed to hear in one book
So good!. Been telling everyone I know to read this book - it’s such a game changer. Raises so many issues Ive thought about but didnt have the words to express. Highly recommend for anyone who wants change but doesnt know how to go about it.
Amazing!. I didn’t know how much I needed this book until I read it! Raw honesty. Couldn’t put it down! I didn’t want it to end. Definitely made me look at my feelings in a different light.
Empowered. Glennon tells her story in such an authentic way, that I feel relieved to experience someone not afraid to be honest. The honesty of anxiety, cages, self talk, confusion - opens hearts for us to love ourselves and listen to within.
Not worth the hype. I don’t regret reading it but I will not be reading anything else by the author. In my opinion the author has a pretty high opinion of herself and I don’t know if it’s justified. But I can see how others would praise this book. Wasn’t my cup of tea.
Untamed. This book is an amazing read that empowers women everywhere. I am grateful my friend Kate Hurlbut recommended this book to me and I will share it with others.
I’d give it a million stars if I could. I sat down to read and read until I finished. I started at 6 and finished at 11:30 at night and did not move. This book is filled with stories of courage and bravery, and how to listen to yourself. Get it. Read it. I will never be the same. Every once in a while I read a book that so resonates with me that I can’t read anything else for weeks afterward because I keep thinking about the stories and how profound they are, this is one of those, in fact I think that this is the one that has affected me most. YOU NEED THIS BOOK, it will change you too, in the best way, and above all else it will teach you to be a God dammed cheetah.
Outstanding.. One of the best books I’ve read in my life. Thank you.
Untamed: To be both Held and Free. I loved the book, especially its call to come ‘Home’, to return to our true nature, the unlearning of all the conditioning to just be...to just be both held and free, untamed and wild, authentic and alive. To be still and know, and to trust our knowing.
Love. Could have a me as a straight woman. Love the book and admire your beautiful author. Thank you.
UNTAMED. One of the best, most inspiring works I have EVER had the pleasure of reading. Glennon Doyle knows how to say the things, that are swirling in our hearts and minds, needing to be said, when we don’t know quite how to express those feelings! She’s a genius!
One of my absolute favorites. I just read the entire book in half a day. I laughed and cried and felt seen. This book helped shed light on wounds I didn’t know I still carried with me. As someone who was raised by a single mother, reading “vows” felt like healing. This is a special work of art. Thank you.
Best book of 2020. Required reading, it will change your life and give you hope.
Braids and Glue!!!!. You’ve done it again, Glennon! I love your honesty and words. I can’t really articulate how to best describe this book. Read it. You will think about yourself and life hopefully new and differently.
Therapy 101. If you’ve never been to therapy, you may enjoy this book as a quick start guide. If you find it to hold many answers for you, you may want to enjoy the real and sustaining benefits of psychotherapy yourself. I found it to be repetitive, preachy, and directed to an audience of people like herself (privileged women struggling with self acceptance). I do think it has value for a specific audience in that it covers basic concepts of self acceptance, mindfulness and making intentional choices.
Glendon, can you write a teen version?. While I don’t have experiences with all topics covered in the book nor do I agree wholeheartedly with every word, Untamed is sincerely written and utterly thought provoking. On multiple occasions tears came to my eyes, not because the sentiment was necessarily a sad one, but because I fully understood the words as if, “Yes! That’s exactly what I’ve been trying to express myself. “ As the mother of twin 11 year old girls, I’m particularly taken with the cell phone, memo, and cream cheese anecdotes. my most often used words used to be, Mommy will help or Mommy will do it and now it’s, life is hard, solve your problem. Please write a condensed version of Untamed for teens. In the meantime, I’ll do my best to pass along the messages you’ve carefully laid out.
Incredible. This book is simply incredible. It raised a mirror to all of my beliefs, shook my perspective on my life and forced me to examine the authenticity I live my life with. Do yourself a favor and read it, it’s worth it
105. Katarina
Inspiring! Captivating!. A must read for everyone out there to truly embrace the WILD nature that lives inside each of us!
Maybe I’m not the right audience?. Not familiar with the author before this, but found the book to be preachy and self indulgent. No need to spend chapter after chapter telling the world that you do what you want and then justifying it over and over again. One of the very few books that I’ve quit in my life.
Eye opening!!. This was the first of Glennon’s books that I’ve read and as much as I want to read more, I feel like I’d be going backwards in her magical life. Untamed opened my eyes to all of the dirty pink bunnies that I was chasing. It wasn’t until I finished the book that I decided to let go of these bunnies and be myself. I loved how different the flow of this book was and how easy it was to read. I’d highly suggest this book to anyone searching for clarity or simply searching themselves.
Lifesaving. This makes me want to change my entire life in a wonderful way.
Meh. Not worth the hype. I enjoyed the parts about her life but that’s about it.
Love. There are almost no words.. I inhaled this book while traveling, loving every minute. Within the first few pages I was figuring out how many copies I needed to buy and send to other women in my life. Each page was beautifully written, open, honest and touching. I am so grateful that she has put into words ways that I can return to myself, not improving or changing, but returning. Thank you Glennon for reminding us that our mother’s martyrdom is not ours to carry, that we can trust our knowing and return to love. As I approach 30, I am eternally grateful.
Sam NBC 84. M NB NBC
Sage. A very misguided and shallow book from a disturbed and unbalanced person.
STUNNING. I am absolutely IN LOVE with how glennon has spoke in this book. It has absolutely changed my thoughts. This book, it’s changed ME . Thank you glennon for writing something so pure, something that everyone should read and for being unapologetically yourself. I’m amazed. I want to reread this book 1,000 times over.
Incredible book!. Life changing book. Do yourself a favor and read it now!
Untamed. If found this book to be repetitive, self indulgent and irritating. The author makes the same points over and over and could easily have said what she wanted in a single chapter. I consider it a total waste of time.
How to move as one AND be in community. It is difficult to write on such polarizing topics. Glennon respected the process and articulated both sides of story while getting her points across. She provided great advice on how to love and respect ourselves, converse with kids/loved ones, and build community. Thanks Glennon.
A must read. IMHO a MUST-read for ALL. Thank you for this book Glennon Doyle!
Yes!!. Each story was powerful. Deeply appreciate the truth and vulnerability. Love love loved!!
Not a memoir. This book was recommended on some site as being a wonderful read. I couldn’t finish it. This was not a memoir and the way she writes and describes everything is not my style at all. Drudging and overly patronizing.
Thank you for UNTAMED. Your story is my story. Thank you for your words, your courage, your truth. The world needs to hear this ❤️
Everything I needed to hear that has never been said.. The stories are imperfectly, perfect.
Glennon is my spirit animal!. I had never heard of Glennon Doyle but was eager for a new read and saw it was in Reese’s Book Club, so I decided to give it a try…omg I have never been so happy with a random purchase in all my life! This book immediately spoke to me, in my own language, in a scary way like she could read my thoughts. It is a manifesto on life, love, and the pursuit of happiness and truth. It should be required reading for every single human being who is trying to figure out who they are and need a guiding light. Thank you for sharing your story, it is a true inspiration!
