"The most provocative page-turner of the year." --Entertainment Weekly

"I urge you to read Such a Fun Age." --NPR

A striking and surprising debut novel from an exhilarating new voice, Such a Fun Age is a page-turning and big-hearted story about race and privilege, set around a young black babysitter, her well-intentioned employer, and a surprising connection that threatens to undo them both.

Alix Chamberlain is a woman who gets what she wants and has made a living, with her confidence-driven brand, showing other women how to do the same. So she is shocked when her babysitter, Emira Tucker, is confronted while watching the Chamberlains' toddler one night, walking the aisles of their local high-end supermarket. The store's security guard, seeing a young black woman out late with a white child, accuses Emira of kidnapping two-year-old Briar. A small crowd gathers, a bystander films everything, and Emira is furious and humiliated. Alix resolves to make things right.

But Emira herself is aimless, broke, and wary of Alix's desire to help. At twenty-five, she is about to lose her health insurance and has no idea what to do with her life. When the video of Emira unearths someone from Alix's past, both women find themselves on a crash course that will upend everything they think they know about themselves, and each other.

With empathy and piercing social commentary, Such a Fun Age explores the stickiness of transactional relationships, what it means to make someone "family," and the complicated reality of being a grown up. It is a searing debut for our times.

Good premise, bad execution. After so many great reviews, I bought without sampling. That was a big mistake. The concept of examining white guilt could have been interesting, but readers are given a trite story that felt freshly-plucked from headlines. The main Black character’s inner life is given little examination. While the white formale lead’s every thought and emotion is on display. Surprising for an author who is a woman of color. The plot is trite and almost takes a Single White Female turn. Alice seems to have mental pain that us glossed over and the ending seems like it’s tacked on to give readers an unnecessary feeling of peace.

Has me thinking. When a book has my evaluating my own perceptions, then I know it accomplished its goal. I think this an excellent read and will make a fine film. I do think the story got a bit messy half way thru but the ship righted it’s course. Looking forward to the Authors next book.

Loved it. I was really surprised that this book was so good! This book is a reminder to never assume and that people are rarely self ever self aware.

@Yannnaas

Amazing. Really shows the relationship and miscommunications between black and white women. I recommend everyone read to gain insight and it’s also hilarious.

BeLove204

Great read!. This is one of my favorite books of 2020!

Renee emory

Wow. I loved it. Now my fav book!

KiKi & Bernsey

Excellent. This was an excellent book.

Such A Fun Age. An excellent read !! It hooked me in on Chapter 1 and I couldn’t put it down . Great characters, relevant topics of race and privilege, old hurts .

Fat back computer shaped b?$@!

Tik Tok made me do it. Overall I did like the fact that the book made me come back to read more to find out what happens in the end. The characters were annoying and hard to grasp. The message of racism and fetishes were clear in the novel, it just needed more elaboration on the entire plot. Emira, although relatable, given the fact that she’s clueless in life, she wasn’t given more time to “shine” in the story. It was a big let down in the end. I wanted more for Emira.

Dest185

Ehh. It was a surface scratcher. Reid opened up a lot of conversations that were never finished or developed really. I finished without feeling connected to the characters or their stories. It takes a VERY long time to get to the point and there really isn’t a solid point.

5 stars. I loved this book, a very easy read & an interesting, realistic look into racial relations. IMO I hate to wade through books like your majoring in English book. No wading here!

Kmoore.hickory

Don’t know why I bought this. Somehow the preview read of this book seemed good. But after that, I didn’t even recognize the story anymore. Not what I expected. Didn’t like the story or the characters. I stopped reading after a few chapters.

AlSwasho

It’s aight. The ending was meh

Tori V. ✨

Relatable. Honestly anyone who has been a babysitter is going to relate so much to this book. The relationship between ‘Mira and Briar is so precious. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because the ending felt a little rushed. But overall, I’ve never been able to relate so well to a character like I was able to relate to Emira!

Expected More. The writing was good but the story was just meh. Felt like it was building and building to little payoff.

Mhazen

Could not put down.. Just wow. What a fun captivating book that really tied it all together. I found myself wanting to not put this down and read it every second of my day, disappointed only when it ended. Character development and progression was captivating. Especially Amera and Alex. Made me think of when I was younger and things were less important. But really puts into perspective the different socio economic situations that people can be put into and how we as a society can be so ignorant and unaware sometimes.

BrittBrittLew

Not as great as I’d hoped. Very flat and boring.

TeezyTaughtYou

It was okay. The thing that attracted me most to this book was over in the first few pages. Then wondering where it could go I was taken in by the story and character building. However I felt lost in the message, and intentions with the whole babysitter relationship and things felt weird. Ratchet ending when the whole book was on another level. Overly decent book for a distraction read, not much to take from it unless you can't relate to Emira*

Aaronique3

Good book. I hated emira’s lack of a voice but great book overall.

Sher V.

Great read!!!. Loved it!! Couldn’t put it down and finished it at 4:30 AM!! LOL!!

Ladyk444

Fast-paced Familiarity with Quicker, Spotty Ending. I loved the pace, sweetness of caretaker/child characters, complex racial issues, spot-on modern humor and story twists. The ending was very weak and rushed. The book could of ended when she left the Chamberlains house and it would of been a stronger finish.

KLM4030

Shallow. I thought this was a really shallow look into a complex world. The characters were not given enough depth, and you really don’t feel connected to any of them, and they were all unlikable.

ChuckBass10

Great read. Easy, enlightening read

K.schoff

Enthralling, Engrossing and Enjoyable. The characters develop beautifully throughout the story. Right, and wrong, are explored in an insightful story full of twists. It’s easy to choose favorites, only to revise those choices as the story develops. And the book was impossible to put down for the second half. Thank you. Thank you.

Drama, Pomp, & Circumstance. It is hard to believe that this book is Kiley Reid’s debut novel. Based on its success, she is going to be under a lot of pressure to match or beat it. Deservedly so. I could not put it down and caught myself gasping loudly at every new revelation. I am still scratching my head at how the debut novelist was able to pack so much into a fast read. There are so many intersecting themes that were so well managed through the course of the book. Race, privilege, miscommunication, imposter experience, identity crisis, and so much more. Each of these subjects getting adequate coverage and without the need of a sprawling array of characters and subplots. What’s really interesting is that Kiley Reid does not attempt to answer or justify any position on these topics. Her characters are flawed in every perceivable way. Each of them is blameless and a victim in one moment, while also blameworthy and guilty victimizer on the end. With the thread of miscommunication layered on for added effect.

Kingstongirl32

Good read. This book was not necessarily what I was expecting but it was good from beginning to end.

MES3414

Couldn’t Put This Book Down. A great read! Thought provoking and impactful. Makes you look at yourself and your own thoughts long and hard.

YayaNetski

Fun Age. Didn’t know anything about this book. It has an interesting premise I could relate to many aspects. Characters were interesting.

Kaykaybean13

Number one newest fan!. This author is incredibly talented and her characters that are multi diverse and multi generational leave you breathless and spell bound. You fall in love with the protagonist and her rich and diverse personality and perspectives in which she sees the world and those around her. Beautifully written with just the right touch of humor and lightness when delving into sensitive and very current issues

Kept waiting for it to get good. What a boring book. Black girl nannies for rich white family of which the wife had a high school boyfriend the nanny is dating. Ok. And then...? Nope, that’s it.

Sweetlips329

An interesting read. Well, at first I struggled getting into this book. Half-way through the story picked up, it was an interesting read. Story plot wasn't what I expected but I will say I enjoyed this book.

Sunshine_BDM

Thought provoking!. Overall, this was a good read! I didn’t like the slow build, but the story kept me wanting to continue reading. Certain parts angered me as a Black woman, but others made me laugh. I really liked the main character and I appreciated the ending. I’m still pondering the lessons learned.

Nathan blackman

Nonono. This has gotten me to the point of no return, the fact is that this book... IS THE WORST BOOK IVE EVER READ IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. The fact that we move so fast into it doesn’t let the reader sink in the emotions of the character, when I read a book I hope it gives me a bit of realistic reading to open a new page of imagery in my brain, this, this has just made me mad. I seriously do not understand as well why people read this book as well, this book has been trashed by a bad storyteller that rushed things up like a last minute school project which in this case has gotten a very bad grade in my book.

Jscann

So Cheesy. This is like a cross between an after school special and a Law & Order episode. Just awful.

J_a_x_

Great Read!. I stayed up late trying to finish reading this book. What a page turner, and it’s not even a mystery! It reminded me a bit of some of Liane Moriarty’s books, only not so... white. This book is well written, with clever wit and jokes that made LOL IRL. The characters were real, believable, and the narrative regarding the implications of race and socio-economic class in their shared experiences was well crafted. There is no way to say this without sounding like some basic white chick trying to be “woke” but as a person with little personal connection to black culture I want to understand others experiences better so that I can take a seat and let others speak. I agree with other comments that this novel is a great perspective on how ignorant and unaware people can be and a great commentary on how people interact in the world. We are all experiencing the world through completely different lenses. No spoilers but I found myself wishing at the end that Emira had been more vocal, but I don’t think it was wrong for the character for things to play out the way they did. I also just finished reading it like an hour ago so I may just need time to mull over it a bit. This is the second book I’ve read recently where a young female character has had a similar anti-climactic climax, I wonder what that says about the way women writers write women, or the way we think we should behave. Or maybe that’s a strength, because these are not the ways a male character would behave?

MixonAdm

Well written. I thoroughly enjoyed he book and the author did a fantastic job of covering every base and leaving no stone unturned. Marvelous!

Donnushka

There’s only one reason I kept reading!. If this is the kind of poorly written sophomoric trash that graduates of the Iowa Writer’sWorkshop are turning out, heaven help us! Every turn of events was predictable. And the dialogue, a complete embarrassment and condescension, bordering on racial stereotyping. I only kept reading because the book was a gift from a relative I love and respect. There’s no telling, I guess, for taste.

Lamm_ie

4/5. Loved the flow of writing so much I couldn’t put it down. But the ending made me feel kinda let down.

Yogurt Mamma

Fun age…. I really liked this book. I even learned some lessons around racism. I read it twice, about a year apart. A worthy read.

Autumatic45

Okay read. This story had great promise, slow at times, the writing was also hard to read at times but I did enjoy the story about white privilege, white guilt and the perspective of the "mammy" system.
