“Rich, dark, and intricately twisted, this enthralling whodunit mixes family saga with domestic noir to brilliantly chilling effect.” —Ruth Ware, New York Times bestselling author

“A haunting, atmospheric, stay-up-way-too-late read.” —Megan Miranda, New York Times bestselling author

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Then She Was Gone comes another page-turning look inside one family’s past as buried secrets threaten to come to light.

Be careful who you let in.

Soon after her twenty-fifth birthday, Libby Jones returns home from work to find the letter she’s been waiting for her entire life. She rips it open with one driving thought: I am finally going to know who I am.

She soon learns not only the identity of her birth parents, but also that she is the sole inheritor of their abandoned mansion on the banks of the Thames in London’s fashionable Chelsea neighborhood, worth millions. Everything in Libby’s life is about to change. But what she can’t possibly know is that others have been waiting for this day as well—and she is on a collision course to meet them.

Twenty-five years ago, police were called to 16 Cheyne Walk with reports of a baby crying. When they arrived, they found a healthy ten-month-old happily cooing in her crib in the bedroom. Downstairs in the kitchen lay three dead bodies, all dressed in black, next to a hastily scrawled note. And the four other children reported to live at Cheyne Walk were gone.

In The Family Upstairs, the master of “bone-chilling suspense” (People) brings us the can’t-look-away story of three entangled families living in a house with the darkest of secrets.

Highly recommend!!. It took me a second to really dive deep into this book, but once i did, i loved every bit of it!

Nakoi001

Shocking at how it all went wrong…. It was a bit of a slow start, what with the views of each character shifting around in the present day; and the events that transpired in the past as well. It grows momentum until finally, you realize who is who and how it all went wrong. I find the shadowy past of this story grimly manipulating, to say the least. It easily spiraled me into a mild depression, and yet, I couldn’t put it down until the dark fog cleared at the end. The more I read, the more aggravating I was to hear about the couple that moved in the mansion. What a wicked, slow way of torture to simply scam a family. I sometimes wonder what goes there Jewel’s head to create such twists and turns to make her stories gut-wrenching or much to adding her red-herrings. I’m fond of her work and will continue to read more.

Love this book!. Slow in the beginning. Tricky to follow all the character and timelines that change every chapter. I recommend reading in large chunks and making a note of the characters so you don’t get. The second half of the book is soooo good. Read like 300 pages in one day. I love this book!

Pidge06660

Confusing. It was difficult to follow each characters story.

It’s ok. This is one of those books where I needed more. When I was half way through the book I realize I didn’t know what was going on. The book got interesting at the end. I really don’t have much to say about it 🤷🏾‍♀️ . The Family Upstairs is a psychological thriller with multiple storylines, following the point of view of three main character . On her 26th birthday Libby, who was adopted discovered that she has inherit a mansion, from a family she knows nothing about . She decides that wants to know more about her birth parents which sparks an investigation with the help of a reporter. she soon finds out that the mystery surrounding her birth family is more complex than she thought. . Lucy’s a single mom of two children , currently homeless and desperately working to put a roof over her children’s heads. One morning she receives a calendar reminder that “the baby has turned 25”, now she’s committed to making it back home and nothing and no one will get in her way. . Henry, one of the child who was raised in the mansion, shares his story of his family and how they lost everything . .

Enjoyed this. Very well written

Lost. Not all books are for everyone…just couldn’t get into this one or keep track of the characters and timeline. Probably won’t read the sequel

Unknown89755433111

Great read.. At first I will admit I was intimidated by how many different character plots were intertwined in this book. However, after you get a sense of how all the characters are connected it makes the read so smooth. I honestly could not put this book down once I got into it. Such an unexpected ending. I highly recommend reading the sequel because it makes the book complete.

Suzy-que12345

Absolutely riveting. This is my first Lisa Jewel novel, I hope I spelled her name correctly, and I couldn’t put it down. So captivating from page one, an absolute page turner, excellent to the very last sentence!

Good Read. I enjoyed this book. Quite a few twist and turns and tied up neatly at the end. I enjoy this authors style of writing. There is a sequel to this book. So I will reading it as well.

Shorty3204

Misery fest.. This was twisted and horrific.. It went on and on. I skipped to the end just to get it over with. I didn’t like any of the characters or their torture and sad stupidity. What in the world was the author thinking? Too much misery.

Brittanicorbello

Good read. Very good book, well written, the end drags a little but is worth it

Nice Read. This was my first Lisa Jewell book. I enjoyed the way in which the chapters focused on individual characters. It flowed nicely and was very easy to follow. I particularly enjoyed how everything came together towards the end. I always judge a book’s greatness on whether or not I’d read it again. Would I read this again, no. But I’m glad that I got to experience it at least once.

Mjsunny

Couldn’t put it down!. Well written, twisty, beautifully sad story. Finished it in two days.

Suff0kate

So good!. Couldn't put it down! I wish there was more.

JASZLYN

Terrible. Too much going on, too many characters and I didn’t make it have way through the book.

Nowieee

Amazing!!. I absolute loved this book! Kept you glued until the very end. I loved the different story lines between the characters and how they all tied up. Every time I guessed my own conclusion, I was wrong. A definite read!

ShaiK

Read it in ONE day. This story is brilliant and perfect for a time when you want to get lost in a different world.

Nadorabbit

The family upstairs. Really enjoyed reading this book! Kind of dark but couldn’t put it down. Nice twists at the end. Going on to the sequel!

Cam010203

Great read!. I really enjoyed this book! Each chapter I wanted to read more and more. The ending was not what I expected to happen!

Dia_Lila

FYI. As of making this review I am halfway through the book. If you are a child or just someone who doesn’t like reading about suicide, rape, sexual intercourse, or murder, I don’t recommend this book. It’s a pretty interesting book though, when it doesn’t show what I mentioned before. Okay, I change my rating. It was fun to read and uncover more things about their past, but some of it made me disgusted. I can tolerate some hints in the description that it has some dark things in it, but not when it just shows itself as a book with mystery in it, when it has wayyy more than that. May you please have a description that says the book has sensitive topics?

Caddomike

Loved it!. Great story

Akalikate

No closure. Didn’t wrap up the storylines like I’d hoped. Still a good read

Amandax345

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. Very interesting novel. Very twisted and you don’t really know where the story is going. Kind of reminds of The Glass Castle with the themes are a different kind of upbringing. It would be interesting to see this as a movie.

MJW6506

Could not put it down. It’s been such a pleasure discovering Lisa Jewell. It’s been so long since I’ve found something I just could not put down. And this was it! Well this, and the other novels she’s written so far. Pretty great, Ms. Jewell, keep ‘em coming!!!!!

Tkllovescats

AMAZING. This book really kept me on my toes. I read the entire thing in one day! Cannot recommend this enough.

Leveragelar

Hard to follow. Too many characters, too much jumping around of the storyline.

Nbahr2020

I loved this book!. I loved this book! It kept me guessing, kept me “turning the pages” on my phone. Will there be another?!?!

Readingbythesea

The Family Upstairs. Interesting story, if you like a twist this is the book for you.

Dannnnnnnnyyyyyyyfkkvbkif

Would recommend 4.3/5. This is a decent book. The story is told in multiple timelines by different characters but it isn’t confusing or hard to follow. A lot of the things adds up in the end and the book answers a lot of the questions you have. The writing is very well in my opinion. The audiobook for this is also really good, I would recommend it. If this is your time reading Lisa Jewells books then I would recommend something like “Then She Was Gone” before reading this one.

Really bad. Pass on this one. Story too long, some big plot holes. Not a thriller, just tedious.

Brilliant. Hard to put down and not overly predictable

Stephie3306

The Family Upstairs. Outstanding book! I enjoyed every minute of reading this!! Love this author!!

HMF14

One of Jewell’s best!. I loved this book and finished it in about 2 days; it kept my attention and kept me guessing. However, I thought there were quite a few loose ends or things that weren’t adequately explained by the end, enough so that it could even use a sequel! Great read and highly recommend.

LauraFisher0218

Words can’t describe. I can’t even put into words how amazing this book has been! I couldn’t put it down and had to read it in two days (mind you I have 3 children) so it was very hard to do. I can’t wait for the next book to complete this story. Well done ♥️

Read in 3 days!. Kept my attention 100% but I still have so many questions. I think it ended abruptly and very open to where there could be a sequel.

A masterpiece among psychological thrillers. The Family Upstairs is a masterpiece among psychological thrillers that you will not be able to put down until you reach the last page. You will delight in its twist and turns, as it leaves you utterly and totally gobsmacked. What I Like The characters are divinely human and drive the plot. Libby is 25 and just learns about her birth parents and their home. She has inherited the home in a very wealthy district of London and now must decide what to do with it. Lucy is a homeless mother trying desperately to provide food and shelter for her son Marco, age 12, daughter Stella, age 5, and their pet dog. When a notification pops up on her phone, her focus shifts to getting her small family back to England, where she was born. And the last narrator is Henry. He provides the back story of the events that led to the birth of the baby that was found 25 years ago in the house that Libby inherited. All three characters are so complex and well-developed that you can easily imagine their choices outside of the immediate picture the story presents. Having three narrators can prove disorienting at first, but all 3 stories are integral to the conclusion and create an element of suspense that carries you through from the first to the last page. The narrators are intriguingly unreliable as they tell their version of their story. Since the characters are so complex, so are their versions of their own stories. They tell us what they want us to know, which may or not be the truth as it really happened. This also builds suspense and leads the plot in directions we cannot possibly anticipate. The plot is like your favorite amusement park ride, full of twists, turns, and sudden stops with a change in direction. And, just like with your favorite amusement park ride, you feel an exhilarated rush when it is over. You will not want to put it down once you start until you see it through to its conclusion. The ending provides the necessary wrap-up but also is very haunting, as you can see outside the picture presented. Questions are answered, but you are left with an unsettling feeling that more questions have developed at the end of the novel. This psychological play makes the story stand out among other books in the genre and elevates it to the distinction of a masterpiece. What I Wish My only wish is that Lisa Jewell keeps writing amazing stories like this one. To Read or Not to Read It is an excellent book for a book club to delve into and debate the psychology, but all will love its complexities. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
