A Better Man by Louise Penny
A Better Man by Louise Penny Book Summary
“‘A Better Man,' with its mix of meteorological suspense, psychological insight and criminal pursuit, is arguably the best book yet in an outstanding, original oeuvre.” —Tom Nolan, The Wall Street Journal
"Enchanting... one of his most ennobling missions." —Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review
Catastrophic spring flooding, blistering attacks in the media, and a mysterious disappearance greet Chief Inspector Armand Gamache as he returns to the Sûreté du Québec in the latest novel by #1 New York Times bestselling author Louise Penny.
It’s Gamache’s first day back as head of the homicide department, a job he temporarily shares with his previous second-in-command, Jean-Guy Beauvoir. Flood waters are rising across the province. In the middle of the turmoil a father approaches Gamache, pleading for help in finding his daughter.
As crisis piles upon crisis, Gamache tries to hold off the encroaching chaos, and realizes the search for Vivienne Godin should be abandoned. But with a daughter of his own, he finds himself developing a profound, and perhaps unwise, empathy for her distraught father.
Increasingly hounded by the question, how would you feel…, he resumes the search.
As the rivers rise, and the social media onslaught against Gamache becomes crueler, a body is discovered. And in the tumult, mistakes are made.
In the next novel in this “constantly surprising series that deepens and darkens as it evolves” (New York Times Book Review), Gamache must face a horrific possibility, and a burning question.
What would you do if your child’s killer walked free?

A Better Man. Too dark....
THANK YOU LOUISE PENNY. Louise Penny is now my favorite mystery writer. Hope, once I’m finished with the book series, I’ll be able to enjoy another season on streaming of Three Pines, and watch a perfect choice of actors playing Inspector Gamache, Alfred Molina.
Not a Better Book. I have loved Louise Penny’s books, but this one ran around in circles biting it’s tail until it fell over from exhaustion. Not her best; let’s hope it’s her worst.
A Better Man. Excellent story line & character development. Can’t wait for the next book.
A Better Man. This author has a strange writing style which includes many one and two word sentences. These are grammatically incorrect.
A Better Man. Loved it!!!!
A better man. Totally in love with the “three pines” stories! I wish I could live there with all my literary friends (and duck). Each book just keeps getting better and better. Problem is,now I have to wait for the next book! Thank you,Louise Penny,
Tdglobal. Perhaps one of the most boring convoluted pieces of fiction I’ve ever read. Surly you do not find this mystery satisfying? Without any literary merit!
A Better Man. Great book, never saw the ending. Kept my interest the entire book…I will read another in the series.
A terrific read. As I continue to read every book in the Inspector Gamache series, I continue to be an in awe of how Louise Penny uses the detective genre to tell stories of the human heart. I think she’s brought me to tears in almost every book. Yes, one does need to suspend the notion of reality a bit, but great stories are not measured by their percentage of accurate data. Every one of her core characters, faces deep challenges, moments of weakness, and then even greater moments of humanity. These books are a joy.
Joek. Biggest
A Better Man Review. I just finished reading Louise Penny's new novel, A Better Man, and as always I found it delightful and engaging. I am concerned though that Jean Guy might not be in the next novel, fighting crime and identifying murderers. It would not be the same without him by Gamache's side!!
A Better Man. Never disappointed in this series. Each book unfolds more about each of the characters . Not perfect. Each growing. Sometimes stepping back so as to move forward. Kept me riveted and when finished being sorry it was over. Can hardly wait for the next look into Three Pines! to
Latest Gift. Louise Penny is a treasure and A Better Man is her latest gift.
Continuing to love Three Pines. This book continues my love for Three Pines. I’m so happy to have a new installment of adventures of Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir. Another great story with twists and turns. I feel like I’m spending time with so many dear, old friends.
Excellent. One of the best in the series.
And on to the next. I can’t get enough of Penny’s inspector Gamache series. I’ve read all but the last two now but want to savor these last two. Each one as good or better than the next. The murder mysteries are only second to the character development that I love so much. I’ll be so sad to see this series come to an end- come on Louise, keep writing!
Ganache Series. This is, by far, my favorite series of novels I’ve ever read. Detailed, intricate plots; amazing, quirky characters; intriguing family relationships; beautiful settings. This series has it all! Louise Penny is a treasure. Most highly recommend!
Love Inspector Gamache. Have read and re-read Louise Penny’s novels about Three Pines and Inspector Gamache. It’s a wonderful world to be taken into - the twists and turns of each murder and the characters are so well written. I really enjoyed reading The Better Man and that Inspector Gamache has solved the crime and rescued another dog, lucky Fred.

Not the best in the series. It’s actually 3.5 stars on this book. To begin with, I was glad that old favourites were back and to discover new characters and an intrigue that would keep me want to reach the end quickly but, as the story moved forward, I was annoyed at the repetitive attacks against Gamache, which is getting repetitive like old news being brought back again and again for lack of anything better to do, and even more about that messy Clara and her selfishness coupled with her belief that she’s such a great artist. To be frank, I think the story would have been better had she not been in it to distract readers from the main storyline. This was a good read but not the best in the series
The Better Man. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. The twists and turns once it seemed the culprit was found. I love the intrigue. Very well written, I felt like I was visiting Quebec, in fact it felt a little like the Gatineau hills.
Just ok. Love this series but this one didn’t work for me, just dragged on
