One Good Deed by David Baldacci
One Good Deed by David Baldacci Book Summary
In this fast-paced historical thriller, the #1 New York Times bestselling author introduces Archer, a WWII veteran forced to investigate a small-town murder -- or risk returning to prison.
It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of do's and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job -- and don't ever associate with loose women.
The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail. Within a single night, his search for gainful employment -- and a stiff drink -- leads him to a local bar, where he is hired for what seems like a simple job: to collect a debt owed to a powerful local businessman, Hank Pittleman.
Soon Archer discovers that recovering the debt won't be so easy. The indebted man has a furious grudge against Hank and refuses to pay; Hank's clever mistress has her own designs on Archer; and both Hank and Archer's stern parole officer, Miss Crabtree, are keeping a sharp eye on him.
When a murder takes place right under Archer's nose, police suspicions rise against the ex-convict, and Archer realizes that the crime could send him right back to prison . . . if he doesn't use every skill in his arsenal to track down the real killer.

Deed. A poor showing for a talented writer. Most disappointing. I feel like I got robbed of $10.00
Love this book 👍. Looking forward to another “ installment “ of Archer…can’t wait
Best in a long time!. Thoroughly enjoyed this book! I couldn’t put it down . . completely unexpected! A must read!!
Good Read. I love it, couldn’t stop reading it. I hope we get to see Archer in other novels.
Wow1. Another great book. Hard to put down. Loved how the characters were intertwined , making a truly mysterious murder mystery.
One Good Deed. Great characters & a mystery with lots of twists.
One Good Deed needs help. I have read all his books and like Grisham he is getting very boring. Not very good. Very slow read and the character is very boring. Need to back to the Camel Club or King and Maxwell. John Puller is good too but similar to Jack Reacher.
Dynamite. Another riveting, can’t put down book by the master, absolutely Dynamite,
Terrific New Character. I sure hope we get to go on a few more adventures with Aloysius Archer. He possesses a sort of naïve, charming intelligence coupled with a strong sense of curiosity and a good soul. All of the charm and dark side of post-war, rural America is in this story. I was left with a feeling of hopefulness. Loved it.
Great read!. Riveting storyline and likable characters make this a fast-paced read that will keep you guessing. Really enjoyed the author’s ability to capture the spirit of the post-WWII American south.
Absolutely wonderful!. Mr. Baldacci introduces an interesting new protagonist in this wonderful book. It is beautifully written, set in an earlier era of America’s history, but in a way that has much resonance for where the country is at this time. Baldacci always populates his novels with fascinating and well rounded supporting characters, which I thoroughly enjoy, and going along with Archer on this journey was a wonderful adventure. Lots of fun and highly recommended!
Great book. Absolutely loved it
One Good Deed. Love Baldacci’s books. After 24 chapters I had to finally stop and mark it finished. He must have a young assistant filling in the chapters. More than half the last page I read described everything in the room. For what reason? He did miss the fly on the wall that was missing a wing! This superfluous Information did tax my reading time. Will move on to another book. Bob Morrison
Persistent Pays Off. Great story. Great new character. Many twists that made it really interesting reading.
One Good Deed. I really, really enjoyed this book. A. Archer is a great character, flaws and all. Plot had me guessing right til the end. Just pre-ordered the next book extending Archer’s journey. Can’t wait to read it!
Loved the book. Baldacci is a great writer. His books have never failed me. My only complaint is that they end. One Good Deed isn’t another great one.
Derivative but enjoyable. I enjoyed the pacing and suspense of this book and the effective evocation of the post-war 40’s. But as one who has enjoyed many of David Baldacci’s books over the years I find myself asking why he need to copy Lee Child’s. One knight errant Army get with no middle name who gate off a bus and into trouble is sufficient.
There Great book! This is an unusual entry for this author.. There is no Atlee Pine in this book. I enjoyed seeing Archer “become” someone so unexpected. I like being fooled to the very end of a book. This book is so much more than the ordinary “I just have to figure it out before” novel. Highly recommended!
Awesome Book - One Good Deed. This book was so good that I read it in two days. Hopefully there will be another Archer book in the near future.
One Good Deed. Good read and well thought out ending that was not rushed. Baldacci never fails. I hope he makes a series out of this new character Archer.
great read and thoughtful plot transitions. suspenseful pace with realistic characters upon a great mystery.
Great book!. Loved it !
I loved it!!. Great story, very well written as usual, fun to read.
Beyond disappointing. Always look forward to a new Baldacci novel. I can only assume Archer is a new series of books but he shouldn’t bother. Writing and crispness of plot not what we’ve become accustomed to. 1950’s setting and read like a really bad 50’s movie.
Disappointing. I used to read Baldacci’s books as soon as they were released. I was a huge fan. However I can’t even finish reading this one. The dialog with the women just makes me cringe. Very disappointing.
One Good Deed. OK, but not up to what I expect from him. New Hero, but a little too far from reality.
Excellent story.. I was expecting detective Shaw to show up in court when Mr. Archer was defending himself. Otherwise I learned a great deal about the criminal justice system.
One Good Deed. Pretty boring. Baldacci May have intended to copy Jack Reacher but failed miserably.
Twists and Turns. Starts out slow like a locomotive starting on a journey, but once it gets up to speed, watch out, it keeps barreling on; nicely done Mr Baldacci !
A quick read.. Not one of his better novels.
Terrible. Could not even get half way thru, disappointing for Baldacci. Boo hiss
Not up to par.. Not up to Baldacci’s usual writing. I’m not sure I can finish this very poorly written book.
Not up to Par for Baldacci. Poor writing. Repetitive plot / descriptions. Non- sensible plot and ending. Not what I expect from Baldacci, it was like he needed a quick pay day and got paid by the word.
Excellent. The characters are believable and there is lots of action and sub plots that keep you turning pages looking for more!!! Enjoyed this book very much and intend to keep reading this author as long as he keeps writing.
One Good Deed. Very good story. Thank you very much.
No Good Deed. Outstanding book I enjoyed reading so much! I love Archer and his awesome story!
One Good Deed. This is an interesting book when viewed as a practice run by the author in creating a new character. The old time noir tone is a bit forced especially when used in the context of modern feminism. Very clever really. The later books in this series were smoother. The WW Two veteran story line a bit overdone
Warning : may cause a loss of sleep. Found it by accident. Stayed up late two nights in a row reading. Sleep I do not regret losing. I really enjoy good thrillers/ mysteries and as a student of world war 2, I found the combination compelling. Being a lawyer, I enjoyed the courtroom scene at the end. A little icing on the cake.

Cost is too high. I love David Baldacci and all his books. But I refuse to pay $19 for a digital copy for any author's books. One offshoot of this is that I am finding other authors I enjoy, as I look for a better priced solution for my reading enjoyment.
Pass. Well below Baldacci’s normal standards. Simplistic , stilted boring.
