A New York Times Bestseller  •  A Read with Jenna Today Show Book Club Pick!

Named a Best Book of the Year by The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post, People, Entertainment Weekly, USA Today, TIME, The A.V. Club, Buzzfeed, and PopSugar

“I can’t believe how good this book is.... It’s wholly original. It’s also perfect.... Wilson writes with such a light touch.... The brilliance of the novel [is] that it distracts you with these weirdo characters and mesmerizing and funny sentences and then hits you in a way you didn’t see coming. You’re laughing so hard you don’t even realize that you’ve suddenly caught fire.” —Taffy Brodesser-Akner, author of Fleishman is in Trouble, New York Times Book Review

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Family Fang, a moving and uproarious novel about a woman who finds meaning in her life when she begins caring for two children with a remarkable ability.

Lillian and Madison were unlikely roommates and yet inseparable friends at their elite boarding school. But then Lillian had to leave the school unexpectedly in the wake of a scandal and they’ve barely spoken since. Until now, when Lillian gets a letter from Madison pleading for her help.

Madison’s twin stepkids are moving in with her family and she wants Lillian to be their caretaker. However, there’s a catch: the twins spontaneously combust when they get agitated, flames igniting from their skin in a startling but beautiful way. Lillian is convinced Madison is pulling her leg, but it’s the truth.

Thinking of her dead-end life at home, the life that has consistently disappointed her, Lillian figures she has nothing to lose. Over the course of one humid, demanding summer, Lillian and the twins learn to trust each other—and stay cool—while also staying out of the way of Madison’s buttoned-up politician husband. Surprised by her own ingenuity yet unused to the intense feelings of protectiveness she feels for them, Lillian ultimately begins to accept that she needs these strange children as much as they need her—urgently and fiercely. Couldn’t this be the start of the amazing life she’d always hoped for?

With white-hot wit and a big, tender heart, Kevin Wilson has written his best book yet—a most unusual story of parental love.

One of the best books I have read this year. It’s a page turner that gives you hope, something we all need in these times. Yet, it speaks to the dysfunction in politics and personalities everywhere.

Hilarious. Please be sure to read this in your mind using your inner stand-up comedian voice! It’s loaded with humor, If children bursting into flames is too fantastical for you, you could take it as a euphemism for something real such as temper tantrums, panic attacks, seizures, etc.

Gogetlo

Uncanny. This author writes about the mists off the wall topics. This is definitely one of them but I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It’s unusual and spellbinding!

Karekarecoco

Nothing to see here. Not really memorable

BOTCHKILLZEE

This is a perfect book. This is a perfect book

Patrickrandomnumbers

Four stars only because I wanted more book.... Was kinda hoping the story would be twice as long to see what else would happen to the characters. Weirdly funny writing and dialogue. Big fan.

Completethesquare

Incredible!. One of my favorite books of this season! The prose is beautiful and Kevin manages to write women with an incredible realism that makes me feel seen. They are ugly and true and kind all at the same time and I want to read more!

Dani_v87

Awesome. Great book! A bunch of bad words not intended for children I’m guessing but if your over the age of 12 I think it’s a great idea

Dan_v87

Really great. Probably best book I’ve read on Apple Books, I have no complaints except that I already knew what was gonna happen at the end.

Weedlepuss

Excellent.. Weird. Touching. Enthralling.

Atreyes5

Fantastic read. I adored this quirky, original, well paced book.

Crazyiphonemama

Loved this book!. I laughed and cringed my way through this book and actually started believing the strange things about these kids. Kevin Wilson’s quirky sense of humor really tickles my funny bone. I’ve read all of his books and I can’t wait for his next one!

Dgdaisy

Easy and fun read. Such an odd premise but somehow it becomes believable. This book was different than any other book I’ve read this year. No real suspense but a good story with lovable characters.

Margauxwill

I loved it.. I was skeptical at first, but it was amazing! Totally worth the read.

Nothing to See here. AS the review in the NYT REview of Books said- “this book is perfect!” It has meaning on too many levels to count. Read up on what the meaning of fire is in the Old Testament to really get your ahead into the significance of Roland and Bessie’s “unusual” tendency. I defy anyone to not be able to relate toLillian and her sad but ultimately fulfilled life. The satirical Billings estate and family are, unfortunately, spot on as well. JUST READ IT!

CaliRya

A wild ride. I hesitated to start reading this because the premise sounded so zany, but it works surprisingly well. I was absorbed into the story in no time, and breezed through the book, catching myself laughing out loud quite a few times. It’s definitely not the book to turn to for parenting advise, as I found myself cringing a few times. Unless you happen to be raising fire children, I suppose. Also, I found the foul language to be overdone and distracting as the book progressed. Overall, a fun read that’s hard to put down.

Kaykaybean13

A pleasantly surprising experience. When I first began this story I was apprehensive about the children and their ability to catch on fire yet as the story unfolded I fell in love with the characters, the imagination of the author and the authenticity of this unbelievable content. Remarkably good and unforgettable!!

Waluigies messiah second dog

Wow. The book was pretty good good enough to give it 5 stars obviously.

Pinkiemomma

Too weird for me.. Just didn’t feel it.
