The Chain by Adrian McKinty
The Chain by Adrian McKinty Book Summary
When a mother is targeted by a dangerous group of masterminds, she must commit a crime to save her kidnapped daughter—or risk losing her forever—in this "propulsive and original" award-winning thriller (Stephen King).
It's something parents do every morning: Rachel Klein drops her daughter at the bus stop and heads into her day. But a cell phone call from an unknown number changes everything: it's a woman on the line, informing her that she has Kylie bound and gagged in her back seat, and the only way Rachel will see her again is to follow her instructions exactly: pay a ransom, and find another child to abduct. This is no ordinary kidnapping: the caller is a mother herself, whose son has been taken, and if Rachel doesn't do as she's told, the boy will die.
"You are not the first. And you will certainly not be the last."Rachel is now part of The Chain, an unending and ingenious scheme that turns victims into criminals—and is making someone else very rich in the process. The rules are simple, the moral challenges impossible; find the money fast, find your victim, and then commit a horrible act you'd have thought yourself incapable of just twenty-four hours ago.
But what the masterminds behind The Chain know is that parents will do anything for their children. It turns out that kidnapping is only the beginning.
"McKinty is one of the most striking and most memorable crime voices to emerge on the scene in years. His plots tempt you to read at top speed, but don't give in: this writing—sharply observant, intelligent and shot through with black humor—should be savored."
—Tana French
"A masterpiece. You have never read anything quite like The Chain and you will never be able to forget it." —Don Winslow
"Diabolical, unnerving, and gives a whole new meaning to the word "relentless". Adrian McKinty just leapt to the top of my list of must-read suspense novelists. He's the real deal."
—Dennis Lehane
"Pairing an irresistible concept with a winner protagonist, The Chain promises to be your new addiction once you succumb to the first enticing page."
—Alafair Burke
"A grade-A-first-rate-edge-of-your-seat thriller. I can't believe what went through my mind while reading it." —Attica Locke

The Chain. I could not put this book down after the very first pages. This plot and the characters are all completely believable. It seemed as if these terrible actions are all completely possible today. It is very compelling.
Good concept good read. Novel concept for a book,. Enjoyed very much. Going to read some of his other books now.
Really good book. Ive been having trouble finishing books lately because they just don’t keep me entertained but this book I read In just a few days I really enjoyed it and highly recommend
The Chain. This book reminded me of the book The Circle (dangers of technology part) and the movies Taking Lives (evil twin part) and Taken (parents willing to do anything to save their child). It was filled with suspense, with physically challenged heroine Rachel and her brother in law Pete, as the protagonists. The evil wolves out there hiding in sheep’s clothing are dangerous. We must be careful of what we share on the internet, especially social media! Loved the ending even if it might be fairytale - but good medicine and therapy can help anyone with everything from cancer, addiction, and PTSD! There’s always hope!! Never give up hope!
Could not put this book down!. Fast paced suspense, excellent writing- 5 stars
Good Read!. I enjoyed the author’s writing style for the most part, but found certain pieces of the plot to be implausible and illogical. I also was not a fan of the ending - I was hoping for something more intelligently crafted by the main characters that I wasn’t expecting. Overall, I read this book in one day and enjoyed it, I think it’s a good read for a plane or a lazy weekend. Although, it is a bit disturbing at times!
Highly Implausible. A fast read, but so far beyond the realm of possibility. I know it’s fiction, but still... a school teacher and an addict?
Oh my God. The best book ever... If I could give it more stars, I would. The suspense was totally unbelievable. An absolute must read. The ending is phenomenal. Don't miss it!
The Chain. It is rare that I don’t finish reading a book even if it’s poorly written and even rarer that I write a review. This book is very poorly written and just boring. Don’t waste your money or your time. After reading all of the rave reviews from various magazines and publications, I’m left wondering if they are reading the same book! There is no way they can rate this book this high; it’s one of the worst I’ve ever read.
Slow start but a good read. Good story line, different, and entertaining
The Chain. Great story line with one of the worst and most implosable endings I have ever read.
Could not put it down!. This book grabbed me over and over again. As a mother the lengths I would go to for my child is vast and never ending. Doing what is done in this story made me really think. Could I? Would I? I highly recommend this. Great read. Makes you think.
Great!. A great read, moved along well. And! It ended with chapter 77! How cool is that?!
Great book!. This was one of the best books I have read in a while. It held me in a panic-like suspense and actually terrified me. We refuse to believe that things like this can happen but this isn’t such a far out concept. Great read!
Best I’ve read in awhile. The storyline was both gripping and ominous. Devoured this book in 2 days. Well done, sir!
The Chain. Excellent book. Read it straight through.
Kept me interested. It’s okay but not great. It kept me interested until the end. But it wasn’t a book I would look forward to reading every night.
The Chain. This was predictable and sick .
Loved it!. I thought the ending was great and tied everything together. This was a great story that kept me wanting to read more and more to find out the end
God awful writing. Absolutely hated this book. I read the first few chapters and deleted it from my library. I wish I could get a refund, it was so bad. It felt like a fan fiction someone in high school wrote and felt good enough to professionally publish.
Gripping. Intriguing concept that kept me turning the pages.
Makes me sad.... I really like the author’s Dublin police books so I had high hopes for this change of pace novel. Premise good but the entire story is too dependent upon readers’ suspension of belief. I am glad Mr. McKinty is making a bucket of money on this but I will wait for a new one of his character driven, edgy and beautifully written books to come along. Soon, please.
Frustrating!. Started off with a bang. Flew through most of the book. Then just when the plot thickened, it became unbearably improbable and childish. Amazing premise with a horrible, horrible ending.
Worst ending ever. Great book though. I wanted more. Can’t just end like that
You won’t put it down. Gripping from beginning to end. A nightmare situation that the author unravels with perfect timing, keeping the reader eagerly engaged to know more.
Implausible and improbable. The general storyline (chain kidnapping) just seemed hard to buy into and the over reliance of the use social media to track characters hourly movements just made this hard to muster energy to continue. I managed to plow thru it while on a plane but it wasn’t the easiest task.
Intriguing!. Great story...very intriguing! I think you just gave some people ideas to try something like this it was so real. Couldn’t put it down!!
Great & Original. Loved this, pretty much read through it in one day. The story line is so original and loved all the characters. Would love to see this become a film!
Gripping. The concept of this book is incredibly disturbing but could possibly happen which makes this book thrilling and hard to put down. I highly recommend it!!
The chain. Hooks you from the start
عظيمة. واحدة من اروع روايات الجريمة حقيقة لم استطع التوقف عن القراءة، الفضول تغلب علي بالكامل لمعرفة ما سوف يحصل، انصح بها وبشدة

The Chain. Really good premise. Some parts dragged on a bit but very interesting!
Hard to put down!. Surprisingly good story; creepy and scary at times. The mother protecting her child to the utmost degree. Flawed characters and evil protagonists. Good read!
Jaw D R O P P I N G. I finished this book in 8 hours. Quite possibly the BEST suspenseful-thriller book I have ever read. If I could have given the review more stars I would have. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Great. Every chapter makes you want to read it. It’s amazing how sick people can be. Not very in love with the ending but it is nice to have that security as a mother I guess. Overall amazing.

The Chain. Quite disappointed. I expect better stories and writing from Adrian McKinty. I have read all his books and loved them- but this one is not up to his usual standard.
Excellent read. This is an intriguing concept well executed. The characters are engaging and there is an intelligence to the writing that is quite pleasing. Highly recommended.
