#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the National Book Award–winning author of Stamped from the Beginning comes a “groundbreaking” (Time) approach to understanding and uprooting racism and inequality in our society and in ourselves—now updated, with a new preface.

“The most courageous book to date on the problem of race in the Western mind.”—The New York Times

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR—The New York Times Book Review, Time, NPR, The Washington Post, Shelf Awareness, Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews

Antiracism is a transformative concept that reorients and reenergizes the conversation about racism—and, even more fundamentally, points us toward liberating new ways of thinking about ourselves and each other. At its core, racism is a powerful system that creates false hierarchies of human value; its warped logic extends beyond race, from the way we regard people of different ethnicities or skin colors to the way we treat people of different sexes, gender identities, and body types. Racism intersects with class and culture and geography and even changes the way we see and value ourselves. In How to Be an Antiracist, Kendi takes readers through a widening circle of antiracist ideas—from the most basic concepts to visionary possibilities—that will help readers see all forms of racism clearly, understand their poisonous consequences, and work to oppose them in our systems and in ourselves.

Kendi weaves an electrifying combination of ethics, history, law, and science with his own personal story of awakening to antiracism. This is an essential work for anyone who wants to go beyond the awareness of racism to the next step: contributing to the formation of a just and equitable society.

A great read. I learned so much by reading this book. Truly a life changer for me. So recommend that everyone read this amazing book.

Garbage Book. Pure propaganda cover to cover

Poorly written, poorly argued. Much better books are out there on this important topic

Antiracist racists. A book that is the opposite of what it claims to be

Louistr8

Good read. Read this and found out I was actually a racist. Good read.

Jammin Johnny

Worthy read, slightly too polarized for my preference. I thought it was a fascinating approach to take me on a journey of his own racist thoughts, and it succeeded in taking me on a journey of my own racist thoughts. My favorite quote, “If the heartbeat of racism is denial, then the heartbeat of anti racism is confession.” The chapter on behavioral racism is such an important realization to come to. Took off a star because I find it polarizing, which is unsettling to me. I am very concerned by people who say that socialism is evil, so I must be equally concerned with the rhetoric saying capitalism is evil. (I don’t think he ever flat out said capitalism is evil but it was a very one sided bash on capitalism.) Both systems have done horrible things. Talking about the systems like one is all good and the other is all evil is not beneficial. Only by learning the evils of both systems can we create a good one. My opinion. Also, for a book that encourages us to focus on policy I still walk away feeling like other than a few concrete examples mentioned, racist and antiracist policies are fairly elusive to me. That probably has more to do with my own ignorance though. Or maybe that was his intention, to give us tools to analyze policy as we come across it. Still giving it 4 stars because I feel it is worthy of reading and discussion. (As long as talking about racism or equality doesn’t trigger defenses in your heart... in other words, you gotta read it with an open mind.)

Propaganda. Basically just biased propaganda. I tried reading but it’s full of misinformation

Fooooooooooooooood

This book is racist. Tries to sell the idea that America is fundamentally racist and the only way to not be racist and discriminator is to discriminate against everyone who doesn’t believe what its narrative is

Crpg3317

Utter pseudo science trash. Please do not support the person who wrote this garbage

Must Read for Racists. Only the offended dislike this book.

More Racist Propoganda. Far Left has gone too far here

KeepApp_RJ

there is referenced and anti-referenced books. … we need to spend a little time referencing when we write a book .. i liked the logic though

Reparations don’t make sense. When all these books talk about reparation it’s really stupid because people’s ancestors were slaves, they had to go through all that hardship, and I can sure as hell tell you that they wouldn’t want they’re great grandchildren trying to make a profit off of they’re hard work. White people don’t owe black people anything, or at least not this generation

Dano the truth

The garbage that started it all. If you don’t follow this clowns dogma, you are a racist. Classic oppressed/oppressor mindset rooted in Marxism . This guy is a clown and does a disservice to the black community. It is the white, Chardonnay drinking females and their beta male husbands that eat this garbage up.

J_Sixx

Lies. This book is full of lies and disproven “facts”. Every thought is apparently racist if youre white. If you work hard its because youre so racist you wish to keep people of color oppressed and you wish to get ahead of them… makes sense right? Not at all. If you are any other race other than a POC, youve exploited systemic racism. If you arent racist, thats apparently just a lie you tell yourself to cope with the fact that youre the racist that oppresses blacks today. If you state a fact such as maybe race isnt the cause of disparity and maybe culture and personal choices are the factors that lead to the different outcomes. But no to state that fact means you want blacks to suffer and youre clearly a racist and probably a white supremacist. Maybe instead of forcing children and young adults to learn about how terrible white people are and how black people are victims today and maybe teach people that race isnt important and shouldnt be focused on. Dividing the country based on race where you bash one with statements casting blame on things they have no control over is counter productive and will just cause a further divide.

ActiveEqualization

Great Intro to Anti-Racist Ideas. Personally, I don’t like the feeling of being evangelized. If you’re inspired by sermons or you’re into sports then I think you’ll really enjoy his style and find this an enjoyable read. He’s clearly very knowledgeable and I will check out his other books.

WNBIII

Categories of Racism. Brilliant book! I always felt like racism was more of a spectrum that everyone was on. But I like how Dr. Kendi breaks down racism into multiple categories of racism.

AuntieSuzie

HOW To BE ANTI RACIST. I loved this book. I loved how Kendi puts his experiences parallel to the concepts of race stemming from his book. It made me understand the meaning of race as a power concept, and how it’s insidious roots spread over the entire globe. He makes you see and understand racism in all its facets. Then he simultaneously says how you can be anti-racist. I think he says we should question why we do anything we do, and from what effect to what affect. Why we talk to people, see people, or hear people whether POC or white, and understand the reasons behind and change if necessary. It is VERY thought provoking, and very educational. I HIGHLY recommend it.

Tigonie

Vomit-inducing leftism. This was so bad I couldn’t even stomach it after the first chapter. It is blatantly rascist and close-minded, disrespectful to black people and discriminating to white people. It isn’t pellucid what he is actually trying to convey, his narrative reads more like a sentimental, though warped novel through a lens of divided racial groups, stereotypes and dizzying egotism. It’s a surprise to me how anyone in their right mind could praise of its non-existent „eye-opening“ qualities and verity. Recommend for the burn-bucket unless one wishes to strengthen their beliefs in the opposing idea or simply lower their IQ.

Brian_AK

Racist TRASH. Anyone who buys or believes this is a idiot. The person who wrote this is dumber than a rock and should not be allowed to remain in America. This is straight out of the Marxist playbook.

BigBreeze33

Eye opening & necessary!!. Ibram X. Kendi wrote an absolutely mandatory read for anyone looking to better themselves, unlearn racist biases & start making steps toward an antiracist world. His personal stories make it very real...it’s heartbreaking, but at the same time it lights a fire in your chest for change. Thank you, Dr. Ibram!!

Rukiya777

Amazing!. It's dense with information and challenges the way most people think. At the same time it's a giant "ah-ha" experience . I love when an author puts into words the deep truths that you know are right but necessarily have the scholarship or language to express.

Ry1001

Meh. Mostly just leftist junk

_Chris2pher2_

Eye opening, must read!. This is an essential read for anyone who wants to genuinely self-reflect, educate themselves and fight against the pervasive disease of racism. Brilliant analysis of how racism evolved and spread in our policies, minds and institutions. Key insights on how we all can be anti racist in every chapter. Read if you want to make a difference within yourself and in society.

Mfhdkelslslfndwnssj

Title is just as garage as the entirety. Doesn’t take one long to realize that being an “anti-racist” is actually being a racist, except against the *right* kind of people. This obviously is not equality and should not be taken seriously. Would like to see literature ACTUALLY pushing the needle forward for equality and REAL liberalism — not this garbage. Would rate less than a star if I could.

1horsepony

Seeks to divide us not unite us. Not worth the read unless you share his extreme bias.. His use of statistics is sloppy.

BobbyoftheBeard

White Guy Here…. …And this is not the last time I’ll read this book, talk about it, wrestle with it, or recommend it to anyone who’ll listen. Kendi picked apart so many narratives that I had taken for granted since birth, and I’m grateful for it. It’s cemented in my brain- among many other things- that what I’d felt deep down about human value was more than hopeful naïveté all along. My own racist ideas have been hard to start rooting out, but this book has given me language, tools, and most important of all a starting point from which to begin the work on myself. Ibram provides a framework for anyone who is open to a reasoned, researched, and historically-informed approach to constructing an equitable world for everyone. Don’t dismiss this book as racist before reading it. We can do better than that, both for ourselves and our children.

Black truth teller

Yes racism exists, but sad to uses lies to promote it. I feel today’s racism isn’t as brutal as the real racism of pre-1970’s. I was disappointed about lies, twisting of one’s comments and misinformation to falsely prove his point. This author used false statements about President Trump throughout his book. For example Charlotteville, this author said Trump said white racist protestors were fine people when he denounced them, and he said there were fine people on both sides. Trump felt the wall would keep out criminals from South America, he did not say all South Americans were criminals. If you want to call out a race problem be truthful, that’s why I discredit this book for its false narratives and statements.

BeccaRN4

Eye Opening. I’ve been trying for many years to understand how POC can be racist against their own race, and this book really explained it well and now I get it. Loved this book and would recommend to anyone wanting to learn more on racism in our country.

Helostgetoverit

Don't listen to the negative reviews.. This book is a very good read. If you want real, honest reviews, don't rely on most of the comments on this app. Find a reliable website that is actually for discussing books. Most of these reviews are from racist, angry tr*mp supporters who haven't even read the sample and want to continue spewing their ignorance and hate.

Turtledav

🤮. A waste of paper back.

A lotus for you

Read its totality before drawing conclusions. A challenge doesn’t always make its full revelation at first glance. Deep work and personal growth aren’t instantaneous. They require perseverance and a willingness to acknowledge where one has erred or been socialized by dominant cultural forces. If you are willing to do this, then this a great book to read.

Nayward

Garbage. Save your time and money, move along.

Salamandr101

Take time to listen. “wherefore, the guilty taketh the truth to be hard, for it cutteth them to the very center.” -1 Nephi 16:2; The Book of Mormon (which is also a great book, I’d recommend it above any others)

O.G Sparks

Amazing. Simply a must read !!

Abbottpublic

Makes some points. Mostly hypocritical. This book and author are mostly ensnared in the same “mirages” it preaches about. While some claims are thought provoking there is little data to draw conclusions to the associations. I will admit this is the issue with most sociology literary works or research for that matter. There is no test to rule out the author’s bias. It’s very hard to ignore the bias political undertones. If you already lean towards the authors hypothesis you will agree; if you are skeptical of his ideologies it will not convince you otherwise; if you are truly on the fence, there you will remain. In all, it perpetuates a divided country.

Atom-ドラゴン

An Entertaining Book with a few Logical Errors. Although this book contains quite a lot of strong evidence for its case, it’s lacking a lot of logical basis. For an example, saying antiracism looks toward racial unity, yet saying that all white people are segregationist or assimilationist, thus singling out white people as having these characteristics. For another example, this book, like similar books like it, lack a scientific view on race. I’m multiracial and I know that if more people realized that skin color was caused by melanin they would see it for what it truly was. Great structure and very well-read author, but the lack of consistency and sound argument in certain places causes me to take off two stars.

Patient New Yorker

Eye opening. Insightful and well written. Provides a playbook on how we can move towards a more perfect union.

Massive Rascist Pile of Trash. Not worth the paper is was written on.

RACISM BEGETS RACISM. BIGOT tells us ALL HOW to be a better BIGOT

Ivy Avitia

Only the offended will give poor reviews.. Clearly people aren’t ready and are offended by their white privilege! Poor reviews are for those who are offended. Change doesn’t come easy, if it makes someone uncomfortable— it’s working. Stay woke America.

Eiondonnelly

Exceptional Narrative Style. The way Dr. Ibram X. Kendi builds the story from early childhood to now telling a narrative of constantly identifying and dismantling the next form of racism in his own life is truly exceptional. I heard negative reviews of this book but bought it on a whim. I’m generally a slow reader but I could put this down finishing it in a week. There are parts of this book I have some questions and maybe disagreements. However, those do not take away from the underlying and driving thought behind this book. I’ve given it to my wife to read and next will be to pass it on to my brother and his wife.

Epicarism

Not so good. Didn’t like.

Vee is trying

Great read IF you wan a change.. This book provides insight on anti racism. Dont let the racist prevent you from making the change.

Hectoreli

Racist book. This book is very racist

SEALteam8

Racist. ..Just another attempt to divide & conquer the citizens of America, by making the whole deck of cards, racist cards and profit off it.

StopSpamTexts

More hatred than substance. If you cry wolf enough, people won’t believe you. Same with racism. It’s overplayed and everyone is fed up. You have the same opportunities as everyone else. Stop blaming everyone else and start working for your future and dreams.

Maurice 777

Beautiful Book. Riveting book and I encourage Apple to filter out some of the hate speech and racist negative reviews.

Surprised me. As a POC, I honestly thought I was pretty good at being “anti-racist” and didn’t need a book. However, this book really goes into internalized racism and how we can start fighting racism by changing our perceptions of it in the first place. I would totally recommend, not just for white people but all people. I’m just a teen and in these times seeing books like these is what gives me hope. Hope that we can make a better future for ourselves.

Sungodlocd

Very challenging and thought-provoking. It’s ridiculous how many of these reviews are from people who did not read the book.

Beanie19864

Amazing, educational, and transformative. HIGHLY recommend for everyone!!

TheOnlyRockBreath™

RACIST A ND LAWLESS NONSENSE!. RACIST A ND LAWLESS NONSENSE! RACIST A ND LAWLESS NONSENSE! RACIST A ND LAWLESS NONSENSE!

Punpunch

What is even this. Thank god I didnt buy it right the way. I checked the reviews and read the sample. Not for me. Sounds kind of close-minded and only shows one perspective.

Flavorcat

Ten stars. Should be required reading. Amazing!

Gabsthehuman

Wonderful Book. The negative reviews are unfortunately written by racists. If they would open the book and read it, maybe they would lose the unfounded hatred in their hearts, but alas, they choose to remain close-minded. This book is wonderfully written and very eye opening! A must read!

AvidReader📚📖

Really?. All people are created by God and have descended from one common ancestor. We need to realize this before anything else can happen to help the cause of anti racism.

Embee8374

Yes!. Informative and I learned so much. Highly recommended

Obunga 2.0

Yeah. This book assumes racism is bad when it's actually good, so it has a false premise. Well written though. Also read Siege.

Chefpat

Great book. A wonderfully informative work. It gave me a clear view of current circumstances and helped me to improve my own behavior.

Rebmilli

Good read. For those saying it only shows one side of things, think about the fact that almost everything in this words from education to media you name it. The narrative is white. I’m white/latina and this book and stamped really shows the perspective no one taught about or reported about. That doesn’t make this book racist.

SemperAmans

Powerful Introspection. Set aside my ego to fully appreciate the depth and knowledge this book offers.

Avery&Bennett

Eye opening. This book has completely transformed how I think about race. I HIGHLY recommend for everyone, even those who say they are “not racist”

Djtenders

Nah. Racist book written by a racist. If it’s so important make it free.

Sethnonstop

Horrible & Racist Identity Politics. Awful & divisive

Isabelle33

This book was racist. So there’s that. Maybe do some research next time you write a book

J-bone21

Tremendously clear analysis. The way the concepts are introduced in tandem with examples from his life convey the personal effects of racism on real people. His writing is clear, logical, and he makes undeniable points against racist thought.

Macintosh2911

Propaganda. Plain and simple. Wake up people

Runandrememberme

Thought-provoking and important. The reviews bashing this book are from people who don’t seem to like the results of their self-examination. This is a thought-provoking book, and it’s never been more important for white people like myself to read. The author even acknowledges their own past internalized racist beliefs and how it’s about addressing policy change over blaming individuals.

Tees12

Well worth it. Read the book ppl.Stop being weird
