THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“My favorite kind of whodunit, kept me guessing all the way through, and reminiscent of Agatha Christie at her best -- with an extra dose of acid.” -- Alex Michaelides, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Silent Patient

Everyone's invited...everyone's a suspect...

During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of thirtysomething friends from Oxford meet to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students ten years ago. For this vacation, they’ve chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands—the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves.

The trip begins innocently enough: admiring the stunning if foreboding scenery, champagne in front of a crackling fire, and reminiscences about the past. But after a decade, the weight of secret resentments has grown too heavy for the group’s tenuous nostalgia to bear. Amid the boisterous revelry of New Year’s Eve, the cord holding them together snaps, just as a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world.

Two days later, on New Year’s Day, one of them is dead. . . and another of them did it.

Keep your friends close, the old adage says. But how close is too close?

Meh. This is second book of Lucy Foley’s I’ve read. I guess I hoped the second one would be better.

Terrible book. I read 200 pages thinking it would get better. It didn’t. Dribble. Don’t waste your time.

Same story ?. Book is very similar to the Sanitarium novel. A bit trashy at times.

A great read. This was my first Lucy Foley book, but definitely not the last. I enjoyed her style of writing and her character development.

Isa_2099

Wild ending. Lucy Folley does a great job of weaving the characters lives together. In the final chapters when the mystery of the events start to unfold themselves by each character - you think to yourself of course it was them while still being shocked. I loved the drama of it all.

Laurma90

Engaging light read. I enjoyed this book, but it lacked the depth I expected. In particular, the denouement felt abrupt, particularly in contrast to the slow build of the storyline. The epilogue loaned some resolution, but ultimately the crime, climax itself, and resolution fell short of my expectations. This was perhaps in part due to the way the story itself unfolded. I felt that the foreshadowing was both heavy handed and yet incomplete in that it failed to add nuance or complexity. This was a satisfying light read, but finished it quickly, but will probably forget about it just as quickly.

Epilogue. Good until epilogue. Easy to quests murderer

Nothing to special. It was ok.

Struggle to read..... I have prided myself on reading books to the end even if my interest wanes. My interest definitely waned reading this novel. It seemed scattered in its plot and was un-engaging at times. Perhaps if same story was told in half as many chapters it would be OK. Disappointing waste of leisure time...

“Meh”. Not that great. Could have taken 150 less pages to tell the same story

A bit of a slow start... A bit of a slow start and then BAM..you have to finish the book and find out!

Unpredictable. The Guest List + One by One + Mean Girls While at Oxford, a group of friends begins to split into couples (with one exception). It’s to the point, the group only gathers for New Year’s Eve. This year, the spot chosen is a Scottish estate that sits on the size of its own country. When a body is found, the caretakers must try and figure out if there was foul play and if help will be able to get them through the snow-in in time. I was surprised to find I loved this even more that The Guest list! First, I guessed almost everything about TGL. Here, I got the victim right, but was completely wrong about the predator. As well as some other twists. I also love that this book is so dark throughout. These people are supposed to be the oldest of friends, but you see how almost everyone truly thinks. I also appreciate how Lucy does her PoVs. She doesn’t have everyone as a narrator, so she doesn’t overwhelm the reader. However, she doesn’t only give us one or two narrators, ruining “whodunit.” I will say I wish I had had more time to order the book from the UK. I really wanted the UK edition, as I prefer that cover. Unfortunately, I couldn’t trust the post right now so wound up buying the American version so I could have it for my Readathon. Buy this for yourself or someone looking for an unpredictable mystery! Or, if you’re twisted, get it for someone who has mentioned they’re not as close to their school friends as they used to be.

Predictable, Not Enough Shock Value. It’s not that this book was bad. Pretty easy read. But nothing really spectacular about it. I felt like I was watching a cheesy sop-opera play out without a shocking plot twist that it needed.

A MUST READ!!!!. Unbelievable twists and turns up to the very end. Didn't see that ending coming 😀 interesting writing approach with each chapter being from the different character's perspective .....fascinating. Please enjoy !!!

Justchoice

Great thriller. It was fast paced, with well developed characters and many twists and turns. I couldn’t put it down.

Melis196

Fantastic. This book is everything you want a thriller fiction book to be. Super suspenseful, lots of twists and turns and a surprise ending. I really enjoyed it.

Amcrunchwrap

It was ok. Got interested half way through giving it a nice thrill but the end felt a little rushed

The Hunting Party. Very well written, entertaining from the first chapter, and keeps you guessing pretty much up until the end about who kills who and why. Thank you, Lucy!

Lonewolfboy92

Worth it !. Refreshingly suspenseful. Will leave you intrigued until the last page . It’s starts off a little slow but picks halfway through. Quality read.

Kept me interested for awhile. I like mysteries and this one starts with an interesting group of characters in an interesting location but half way through the story the characters begin to be a bit tiresome and I became aware of how the author was padding out the story with tedious details and actions around drinking too much. It was easy to guess who the victim and the murderer was so the convoluted device of going back and forth in time didn’t add much to the suspense.

Raspberrytoes

The hunting party. Drags on and on, developing some of the too many characters, bouncing back and forth…., awkward time line and an oh so disappointing ending. Will not be reading any more from this author. Very disappointed.
