Lady Helena Investigates by Jane Steen
Lady Helena Investigates by Jane Steen Book Summary
A reluctant lady sleuth finds she's investigating her own family.
1881, Sussex. With a drowned husband—the second love lost—an overbearing family, no longed-for child, and the responsibility of a huge baroque mansion, it's not surprising Lady Helena Whitcombe is overwhelmed. When attractive, mysterious, French physician Armand Fortier disturbs her first weeks of mourning with his theory of murder, Helena's reluctant and ineffective attempts at investigation are hardly life-changing—until the resulting revival in her long-abandoned herbalist studies bring her into confrontation with her past and her family's.
Can Lady Helena survive bereavement the second time around? Can she stand up to her six siblings' assumption of the right to control her new life as a widow? And what role will Fortier—who, as a physician, is a most unsuitable companion for an earl's daughter—play in her investigations?
Every family has its secrets. The Scott-De Quincy family has more than most.

I wasn’t disappointed. This story was quite different from “The House of Closed Doors” series I read. I wasn’t sure at the beginning that I would like it. But, I found that it became more and more interesting. It had twists that I never thought would happen. It turned out to be a great read with a great story.
Intriguing. To put it succinctly, a woman loses her man, her behavior is constricted by peer pressure and she eventually finds herself.
Easy Read. Nice book easy read.not to compelling and a little winding in some chapters.
Great read!. I liked the character development, pacing, detail about the countryside, and history brought to life. I hope another novel covers more in Lady Helena’s saga.
very interesting plot, good characters and fine language.. very interesting plot, good characters and fine language.
Enjoyable. Enjoyable
Descriptive. Not much depth to the plot. I easily pictured the surroundings and the people from the descriptions. Easy read but not really much to it.
Wonderful. I just loved the story, wishing I could read to the end of Helena’s life to see what happens next. Great background, mystery and suspense for what will happen next! Love love loved it!
Lady Helena Investigates. Absolutely loved it.
Lady Helena Investigates. How suffocating it was for women back in those days. I’d have hated men to the core.
Superb!. An excellent story, recounted by a superb writer. A tale that was engrossing from the first page, to the last. I enjoyed getting to know all the various characters and was truly saddened when the story came to a satisfying, but much too early, conclusion. I’m certain some day I will reread this grand piece of fiction!
Lady Helena Investigates. An interesting set of characters -a family you learn to love - a few twist and turns make this a great read - of course I love the touch of romance too! Looking forward to the next chapter in the Scott-DeQuincy family saga!
Winner!. Can't help but to praise this author for writing exceptionally crafted tales! What I really enjoy is the slow build of the romance between her major characters in The House of Closed Doors as well as Lady Helena Investigates. I thoroughly recommend this read!
Very Good!. Great read with surprises around every corner.
Lady Helena Investigates. An excellent period piece, complete with descriptive passages that thrust the reader full force to the past. Drama, intrigue, and murder complete the picture.
“Lady Helena Investigates”.. I really enjoyed this book “Lady Helena Investigates”.
Fascinating and Dramatic. This novel would probably attract more women on the basis of 1881 Aristocracy era. I appreciate the research effort to understand the daily lives and tragedies of the characters in this period.
Lady Helena Investigates. A truly enjoyable mystery. I loved the twists and turns the author incorporated into the storyline. Totally fascinating.
Love this book. Kept me second guessing my self. I didn’t want to put it down!
Lady, Helena investigates. Excellent; honest characters, honest emotions. Hissed, historically accurate and enjoyed the interactions between different levels of society. Strong, plot lines, a great educational read.
Good book but not really a mystery. This is a well written book. It is a family drama not a mystery story. It is a little too psychological for me.

Fascinating. An easy read with depth. The story and characters are complex yet realistic. The author depicts a historic world that feels like it could have happened. Although there are dark events in the book it is not depressing or heavy going. I will be buying the next one!
Lady Helena investigates. A thoroughly enjoyable read. Love the family intrigue and social history. A gentle introduction into life of the aristocracy in a village setting and the hidden secrets of a family. Look for to following Lady Helena as she grows into her new life as a widow and landowner with all the responsibilities plus the blossoming relationship between the French doctor.
