From #1 New York Times bestselling author Holly Black, comes the first book in a stunning new series about a mortal girl who finds herself caught in a web of royal faerie intrigue.

Of course I want to be like them. They're beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.

And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.

Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him--and face the consequences.

In doing so, she becomes embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, discovering her own capacity for bloodshed. But as civil war threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

Not finished yet, but I will say. I am not liking Taryn at all. You can see that Jude will give the world for her and taryn couldn’t care less if she had to drop Jude as long as Is beneficial for her

Caityyule

Not worth it. So incredibly boring. Skipping chapters from the very beginning..

ChelleRenee34

Amazing!!. I couldn’t put it down! The suspense, the plot twists, the completely awesome character of Jude was just superb. I haven’t been giddy over a book in a long time and this had me spiraling!! I can’t put into proper words how awesome this read was! I can’t wait to read the other books!!

Ah. Su

Love this book (spoilers). Amazing!! I loved the plot, the world and the characters! Jude is such a strong main character and I like how, even though she makes some questionable decisions, the reader supports her anyway. The character arch’s were also well written. The negative turn for Taryn and the positive for Carden. I did start this series with the promise that it’s an enemies to lovers book and I’m glad that it’s a slow burn. I dislike it when authors speed up the romance to fit in the first book. Currently, I like the dynamic between Carden and Jude because they definitely have chemistry but there is still a LOT of work that needs to be down before they can come together.

Give it a shot. I was super skeptical about reading this book because the summary was not my thing. I just finished reading the series, so I must have fallen in love with the story somewhere along the way.

Bookiecookie🍪

I’m in love with this book. This book is definitely one my all time favorites i could reread this series a million times and never get tired of it! I have recommended this book to three of my friends and they loved it just as much. Jude and Cardan are AWESOME! Jude is a QUEEN ♥️♥️!! The character development, imagery, writing style, and plot are all amazing 💋👌🏽. I have read other books by this author and they are all pretty great. Kudos to you Holly Black!

Skylaqueen6676

A masterpiece. The character building and world building are genius

Yourcoolflipper

adequate for first time readers. great storyline filled with twists in plots, mixed romance, and aesthetic characters

Stella090909

Loved it!. I would love to see a Cruel Prince on screen one day. Dynamic, with it’s own twists and turns, this book will keep you awake at night.

Blubisglub

Wow. I may not be much of a reader, but I found this to be a good read. I truly enjoy it not being a super long book, but also having fantasy and angst and romance and betrayal. It keeps me reading, and I enjoy every bit of it.

Saya Kaz

Don’t understand the hype. I couldn’t even get halfway through this. No clue why so many people like/recommend it :/

18hunnerd

weird writing. everyone raves abt this book and honestly??? i tried to read it about 3 times, gave up each time, before i tried again for the 4th time and forced myself through it. this books is veryyy slow.. you don't know where the plot is, and none of the characters are particularly likable (maybe that's because the writing doesn't do much to help us much in terms of narrowing down the personality of each character). i went into it knowing who jude romantically ends up with and was uber surprised to find out that jude doesn't even interact with her supposed 'love interest'. jude doesn't look twice at the love interest throughout this entire book: there is no mention from her of him being handsome or any tension between them at all... and then once the love interest basically says 'yea i like you', jude is all the sudden interested and kisses him????? ummmmmm what????? it was very out of left field, left me wondering if i missed some chapters because it was sooo.. random (and again, this is coming from someone who knew that jude ends up with the guy!). i was looking for the signs and there were none. maybe i just prefer a more thorough narrator as a main character, not sure.

Awesome. Diggity dope

Xoxoclarinet

Best Book Ever!. This is the best book i've ever read. I love reading fantasy and dystopian novels and so far this one is the best.

Dede1486

What a surprise!. I loved it! A great read and I look forward to next one!

Teaching Psychology Every Day

i enjoyed it a lot!!!. i absolutely adore the ending and i love cardan and jude!! the beginning was kinda slow, but about half way through it got very good!! their wasn’t much romance, but i think that made the book better. read this if you liked acotar but want a book with actual plot and a good main character :)))

GracieBear🧸

AMAZING. I don’t even know what to say I’m in love with this series

Vanella bean

My favorite book series ever!!. It is by far the best books I have ever read! The plot, the romance, and the drama is just AMAZING! I LOVE IT! ❤️ Cardan is just mwah 😘

BlackReedeemer

overrated. now look, i found this book through friends and we take a lot of interest in books with folklore characters. they really messed up with the troupe, because it was obvious the author had tried ‘enemies to lovers’. the ending was really rushed and didn’t make much sense but the beginning to be honest was the entire climax. i wouldn’t recommend this book unless you like bizarre plots.

The Cruel Prince. This novel is an interesting read that keeps one motivated and involved in the plot. Those interested in fantasy will be happy, and those interested in debating good versus evil have points to make in this fun imaginative story.

MingisMaid

FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME. I see a lot of comments saying that this books is hard to get into and I defiantly agree with that. Personally, I had to pick up the book 3 different times just to get past the first 10 chapters. Once I did get past it and really pushed myself to read it I was in love. I’m so glad that I found this series even though it was a rough start. This will forever be my comfort series so please, give it a few more chances if needed.

Folkoftheairfan

AHHH WHERE DO I BEGIN?. I hadn’t read books this whimsical since I was a kid, but now I have been transported back to faerie realms and otherworldly realities. This book helped me get back into reading in general since I couldn’t put it down for a second! Every single page was packed with interesting information. Jude’s character is very intriguing and different from the everyday usual protagonist, which made me more glued to this book. All the plot twists really had me reading this everywhere at any time. I’d recommend this series to everyone—-regardless of whether they’re a reader or not.

Loya Da

Disappointed. I love this kind of fairy stories but this one was a big disappointment. I didn’t like any of the characters not a single one of them had a strong connection. I skipped a lot of pages just to see what’s happening next because the story was going on and on with something of no importance. I see that lots if people rated this books 5 stars but i feel that it was just wasted money and i cannot give it more than 2 stars.

HonestyKills

Love love LOVE. I read the whole series and I’m just so amazed on how Hollys imagination can come to life in your head. I’m scared I’ll never find a good book like this again 😭 I def recommend!!!

Titibb44

Love this book. The cruel prince was a fun read!! a little hard to get through in the beginning but once you get to climax the story really starts to get interesting and intense. i did enjoy the romance though i hoped for a little more. O

FrolicFae

Jam packed with intrigue and adventure. This beautiful and gruesome start to this magical tale is hard to put down. The world building is fantastic and in depth. The main character is gorgeously flawed and interesting. I love the danger and never ending plot twists that comprise this story.

KarisLovesAnime

Best Trilogy. The Folk of Air is now my new favorite trilogy, a real page turner

Monroemarie22

Give it a shot!!. I was hesitant, because like others said it did take a little to get used to the writers style- but then I got HOOKED by the story and you will too!

Z book reader

LOVED IT. I had very high hopes for this book since I heard great things about it and was definitely satisfied. I loved how this book was not afraid to be “cruel” or uncomfortable and truly value when a book like this is created. Read this please. This book left me in a state of wonder with its colorful and twisted setting.

Tissuetot

Nothing special, not horrible.. To start off, this is perfect if you are looking for YA.I was not. Very stereotypical YA fantasy. Reminiscent of a regular teenage storyline with parents, school, and bullying, problems. And of course the romance, which is sparse at best. . I felt like the plot was based off of a ‘regular teenage experience’, then they tried to sprinkle in fantasy as an afterthought. Especially in the beginning. Extremely angsty. None of the characters were very well developed, and you can say the same for the plot. It did get better toward the end, and I was thinking about buying the sequel. It was a struggle for me to stay interested, so I’m going to opt out. Not to my taste.

Hiser21

Not great. The whole book was poorly written. I didn’t feel connected to any character and found myself skipping multiple pages to get through it.

Bwalya8

Great read!. One of the best series I’ve read so far! Love it!💜

Senochu

Left me wanting more. The world building was amazing. I was invested but then there was this weird part that just felt like it would have been cooler a different way. The main character wasn’t very likable and I wasn’t extremely attached to any of the characters.

Gothfroggu

sooooo good. it is amazing, and it never fails to leave you surprised either.

Alexiajc97

What the heck. First, loved all the books. I’m a fan of fantasy books and movies. The perfect book for me !! I actually can’t believe the negative reviews. Even if you don’t like the book, I cannot imagine leaving reviews saying how someone’s time and passion and great intentions was a waste of money and the worst thing ever. People are so weird and removed it’s sad. When you pay for a book you’re doing it already knowing the money is gone. So if you’re that broke to complain about it after then stop buying books. Anyway, great books and I wish there were more in this series talking about their ruling etc! Maybe one day!

Chanchan15

Loved it!!!. Jude is amazing!!!! Can’t wait for the second book!!!

AMAZING FIRST BOOK. The storyline and plot twists is amazing! The book has been getting hype for a while now and I didn’t know if i should buy the book because of the mixed reviews, but then I realized every book is like that so I decided to pick up the book. I was not disappointed! I like that there’s modern in the story. Overall I Highly recommend the book!

Dumpling1999!

eh. honestly this book let me down. i dont know if i should read the next book. this book bored me to the point of skipping chapters and the plot felt like it was everywhere. this book did not live up to the hype.

Funkops

Best book ever. Better than any other book it has it all from adventure to fantasy to comedy and romance. It is amazing !!!!!

Monasaderskincare

So Good!. ❤️

Fantasy_nerd

I love this book, definitely worth my time and money. I love the plot of the story, and the main character (Jude’s) character development, you can really see how she grows through the story for the better or worse. I definitely recommend this book to people who love fantasy and powerful characters.

Lohlerkindsey

Disappointing. It feels like 3/4 of the book is the author setting the stage and spewing details at the reader and then finally in the last quarter, the plot actually takes place. I wanted to love this book and had high hopes after reading other reviews but this one just didn’t really do it for me.

Bowaliciousx3

Not terrible. I just could really enjoy it until the last few chapters

Sophia, C

Forever my favorite. This is always going to be my favorite book. The series get better longer in the series. 10/10 should read

WoosahPanda

Meh. I read this entire series within a few days, after just reading the ACOTAR series and the From Blood and Ash series. This series is a MUCH milder version of both, hence the young adult genre. Regardless, I just felt like I was always left wanting more.. and not in a suspenseful way. My 14 year old self may have appreciated this book more.. maybe.. lol. Just not sure why this book is recommended for fantasy adult romance.

Daryaumi

Just amazing and nothing else. It kept me awake every night so far! Want to mention that I thought it was a little boring at first and I was expecting the story to finish just like I imagined but BOOM! It ended up unexpectedly and it got exiting after a few chapters. I recommend it to you all

123LOOoL

best book on earth. Jude is fr an icon ND BRO CARDAN AND JUDE TG OMG.

LeleC05

The Cruel Prince. One of my favorite series!

Addisonlovesbooks

AN AMAZING BOOK. This book series has gotten a lot of hype in the past couple of years and when I finally decided to pick up The Cruel Prince I was not disappointed!! Jude is one of my favorite protagonists ever because she has actual flaws. In a lot of books I read the character HAVE flaws, but they’re so small and insignificant that it hardly affects the storyline at all! But Jude Duarte shows vulnerability, raw emotion and all the amazing stuff that you can relate to as a human being. Character development was ON POINT. One second I would love a character and the next I would be wishing them dead. Holly Black played with my emotions throughout all three books in the series. In the beginning I DESPISED Cardin, but now I literally am in love with him. The storyline is also really awesome. A lot of storylines seem forced but this one just flows so naturally I forget I’m even reading!! I don’t usually re-read series, but I will defined be re-reading this one, over and over and over again. If you have not read The Cruel Prince PLEASE read it!! It is one of the best books I have ever read. You will thank me.

Woowooohoohoo

It’s ok. Just couldn’t get into it. Found myself skipping a lot of parts just to get to a better part

Not my thing.. Let me preface this by saying I was excited to get to reading this book, from all the amazing things I’d heard about it. This was my entry point into the fae craze, so I came into it as a blank slate. I knew nothing of fae lore or courts or worlds, so this book kind of just threw me into it headfirst. There was absolutely no world building in this book, so it was like walking around blind. It relied on its predecessors for the world building, as well as assuming the reader already knew about fae courts and its systems and rules. Which, I did not. The main character didn’t really interest me. I feel like the author tried to mould her into a callous warrior, but I didn’t connect with her motivations at all…nor did I see her as such. She felt flimsy, at best, and a little frustrating in her “defiance”. Her love interest, who is indeed cruel, has a reason why he acts the way he does, but it is explained away in such a hand flick manner that I honestly felt no sympathy towards him. Moreover, there is no build up to the moment he falls for her. It kind of just…happens. I was left feeling underwhelmed and, quite honestly, very disappointed. The plot is…well, I honestly could not tell you. Vaguely, falling in love? Maybe? I will say this, the assortment of characters had the potential to be interesting. When the characters are strong, even if a plot isn’t the focal point of the story, i tend to stick around. I do wish they (that is, the cruel side of the cast) had been allowed to shine more, and had their motivations fleshed out for us to see. Vivi was absolutely my favourite character, and I am of the opinion that the story should have focused around her. Another character in particular interested me in their cruelty, but before anything could be explained, they died. And I simply didn’t have anything keeping me anchored to the story at that point. I don’t know, this just left a sour taste in my mouth. It wasn’t my cup of tea. If you’re into heavy fantastical world building and a fleshed out cast of characters, you won’t find it here. And don’t use this as an entry point into the genre, you will be lost. But if you’ve already got some fae books under your belt, are knowledgeable in general fae lore, and don’t mind a plotless romance, then maybe this will be more your thing.

Lilregs6

Holly Black. You rock, never change

Shani789

Good read. The world building was done so well

InTheKitchen00

Meh. VERY PG13. Definitely a book for a younger audience. Felt like I was reading about someone in middle school. Bullies, crushes, arguments with siblings… it all seemed quite juvenile. But maybe that was the intended tone. Just not what I expected from the description.

MDT??!!!

Loved it. I read the physical book and I loved it. But the wicked king and Queen of nothing (books 2-3) are so much better. If there are any people out there considering reading it the answer is YES!

Isabella fdc

I will be re reading till the day I die. I dont read much, and THIS BOOK WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO PUT DOWN. I became obsessed with the trilogy very quickly. I could write an essay on Jude I swear. It really is a dark jewel of a book.

Sstepas

Loved it!. Read the book in a day! Couldn’t put it down.

Read it!. If you’re the type of person that can’t put a good book down and you’re willing to lose a few nights sleep to see what happens next, proceed with caution! This book is great! The characters and plot are so well thought out! I couldn’t put it down.

Oofie1(&(8

Omg. I’ve never actually read it, I’m just bored. I’m sure it’s great though.

Anonymous8838

Best book ever. This book was such a good one there is romance, betrayal and action this is one of my top fav books you have to read this I’m not kidding absolutely love it wish the next book would come out sooner!!

Ronniee_b

Great read!!. This book had a slow start for me, but half way through I couldn't put it down. Can't wait to finish this series.

Mandipandi2214

Amazing. I first read this book when it came out. I’ve reread it twice now and it’s still as amazing. When I first read it I think I was amazed by the protagonist and kind of wished I was like her (even though I’m a pacifist) Now I’ve read the sequel and am anticipating the third book. I suggest this book to anyone who likes a good plot, good characters, and faerie magic.

Abookwormfae

It gets better. At first I was so excited to start this book, it had promised everything I wanted. The first book was extremely slow but a lot of key moments that led me on and I couldn’t keep the book down, from here it only gets better. Don’t give up like I was about to :)

Chloe9200

It had its flaws. I read this book because of popular reviews and I wish I hade loved it like everyone else did. I wish the pacing would not have been so uneven because it would have made the romance portion of the book much better. I must admit that I am a sucker for romance in a novel and because of the pacing no actual character relationships were formed but they just appeared. I found that part very disappointing but I liked Judes motives and so that really kept me interested. Regardless, I have also heard it gets better so I will continue to read the rest of the series.

Yvette Br.

Loved Jude. I really enjoyed this book. Jude is a great character and I enjoyed her journey. Cardan was so cruel throughout the majority of this book that it’s kind of hard to feel sorry for him. I know he was tricked by Locke but he still did a lot of cruel things. I was really surprised that Cardan doesn’t really interact much with Jude for a good chunk of the book. The first 70% is just him being a cruel bully and then short scenes of Jude observing him. Up until the last few chapters, she interacts with him the least out of everyone in the book. This book really focuses on Jude and not really both of them together until the end. I liked Jude though so it was ok. I hated how disloyal and selfish her twin Taryn was the entire book. I honestly don’t understand how she could betray her sister over a guy who doesn’t really care about her just to be accepted. I’m interested to see where this goes and I hope the next book has Cardan in it more. I really liked his interactions with Jude towards the end. I’ll probably need to adjust my expectations a little though as this seems more like Judes story rather than Jude and Cardan. Still looking forward to continuing the story.

Books.complete.me

Exciting Novel. Amazing vocabulary, story and female heroine.

Persypie

Masterful. Holly Black has dazzled me once again!

Andreacait007

So fun!. This was such a good read!!! It’s about so much more than you think and Holly Black so easily ropes you into it all!!! 10/10 would recommend! I wish I could read it again for the first time!

Dragonfish1829

Amazing. I love this book it’s amazing read it in two days.

Jayyyyyyy12344567788977666

One of my favorites. I bought the book on Amazon, and, my gosh, i was excited about it even before i got it. I’m still waiting for the Gold Tower by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare, as i’ve read all the other books, and i cant tell you, they’re AMAZING. And, sorry to those who liked the Iron Trial better, you’re wrong. I liked this book at least twice as much. Where do i start? I obviously won’t give any spoilers, don’t worry, but lets just say, if you don’t have this book already, GET IT. Honestly, if i could give it 6 stars, i would. 5 out of 5, definitely. I loved everything about this book, and i hope to see book 2 soon. From the plot, to the way she described Faerie, i loved it. It left even me second guessing myself. There are some things that happen that even I didn’t expect, and, honestly, i’ve seen a lot of things coming in many books. Im not afraid to say, i did not see quite a few things coming. It was amazing, fantastic, miraculous, and, just a little bit magic.

Pok3rFac3

2nd book please. Holly Black has been a favorite of mine since Tithe. When I read that she was releasing The Cruel Prince this year I was beyond excited to read it... I couldn’t put the book down and after finishing I wanted more. I’m so excited for the second book. I can’t wait to see how the story will progress with Jude, Candon, Oak, and the others

Fr3nch_

The best. I can’t express how awesome her books are. It’s a page turner.

Mmarcone912

Meh. I heard a lot about this series so I gave it a shot. I like Jude a lot, I thought her growth & journey throughout the book and series was compelling, but I thought the romance was dull. Cardan is not a great male love interest....not really much to like about him. This book tried to do the “enemies to lovers” trope but it just wasn’t well done. The “enemies” have to have actual redeeming qualities and there needs to be sexual tension. There was none to be found here.

Da purple queen

This book is maaad good. The series gets even better with each book, from the plot to the cliffhangers, ”The Folk Of The Air” trilogy quickly became my favorite book series of all time! I love it!👌

Yenzhere

invented enemies to lovers. amazing characters. interesting plot. it has everything.

Gaflabadaubs

Dark, twisty, enchanting. I picked this a book up about two months after its release, and let me tell you, I was not expecting to be thrown into a tale with so many twists. I’m afraid I may spoil the book if I go in too long, but if you’re having doubts, why? This book is so good that I finished in a day, and then I preordered the next one as quickly as I could. If you’re a fan of the Mortal Instruments, then I think you would like this, excuse me, love this book.

Ms.Alex21:)

Loved it. Was amazing. Definitely better than what I was originally thinking

Cheri22287

Great book. Very well written and great story, highly recommend.

CONSUMED!!!❤️❤️❤️. If you liked “Throne of Glass” series by Sarah J Maas, you’ll love this book! I couldn’t put it down! The curve ball at the end brought me to tears. Awesome book! Can’t wait to keep reading!

The Cruel Prince. Amazing

Makoobi

Pretty good. Pretty good.

7th Duchess of Bedford

Good Start. As other people have said, this book is familiar ground but still very entertaining. While the plot is original (I think! but haven’t read quite enough YA fantasy to swear to it) the characters are like shadows of those in other books, particularly Sarah J. Maas’s NA fantasy series. But a third of a Rhysand is still better than 99% of other heroes so I’ll take it. As for Jude: cool name, great tragic backstory, pretty frank about her ambition which is cool. I can already tell her evil twin is going to be kicking up larks in the rest of the series, but what I don’t understand about ANY of these fantasy series is this: why can’t the Rhysand-type characters (the ones with power and charm and access and money and looks) be girls? Why must the heroine and, for that matter, all the other good-side girls be only in-your-face “Hulk smash” without a lot of craftiness or diplomacy skills? I’m not downing the brassy heroines, they’re great! I would just like to see someone who can combine the skillset Taryn has, with the moral compass and power of Jude. Perhaps the authors believe women have enough real-life diplomatic heroines and not enough women role-models who can frankly own their ambition and power. But looking at the ascendancy of “Hulk smash” type politics has me pondering if we really need role models of any gender who are all about force and fierce without the counterbalance of tact and cunning. As of right now, Jude is maybe 70/30 in the force/tact ratio and her moral compass is set at about a 50/50. Hopefully this series will show us how she grows.

Blair Vanderlee

The Best. I would suggest this book to anyone who likes fantasy, adventure, it even has some romance! It’s one of my favorite books and I can’t wait for the Wicked King to come out!

Ana.is.ita

Amazing!!. Incredible start to a series. I think this book was perfectly paced and I fell in love with the characters especially Jude. I could honestly say that she is one of my favorite female characters of all time! I look forward to reading more about her. What a wild ride! Highly recommend for anyone who loves a good adventure!

Abducndibd

Entertaining easy read. Entertaining read. Easy and has great plot twist. Great blend of fantasy and reality. The novel starts a bit slow but is well worth sticking it out until the story line picks up. The main protagonist growth from start to end was significant. Satisfying ending.

Love this app!! So awesome!!

#CruelPrince. ❤️❤️

Wordthrill

A driven character. Jude has been bullies and diminished for years. In that time, she quietly honed her skills as a fighter and paid attention to the subtle nuances in striking fairy deals. She uses her hard earned attributes to ascend in a culture and land that do not want her, finding the most unexpected love along the way. The book starts by recounting an early childhood experience. Although it helps to shape Jude from a weak to strong character, I wish the story could have started with Jude in her present time and later reflected on her early childhood trauma. Holly Black does an excellent job of weaving together plots and always providing an unexpected turn at the height of the excitement. The three book series is an enjoyable read. The thrills are well paced, making the books hard to put down.

Felicoff

An Awesome Female Heroine. I thought this book was a slow burn romance. I was right, but it’s so much more than that.

CaraleighJane

A slow burn that builds. It took me a couple tries to get through the first bit of this book, but once the story started to take shape, I couldn’t put it down.

GhibliPendragon

Pretty Cool!. The hype was real with this one!. 1) Plot: Has heavy mystery elements, and the plot twists were dramatic and satisfying. 2) Characters: Strong female lead and some of the more complex relationships I’ve read in YA. All the characters bordered on genuine uniqueness and were a pleasure to read. They were clever and flawed in realistic ways. Cardan bordered on clichê but the author handled him really well. 3) World: I’m not well versed in anything to do with Faerie but this book is great at immersing you in the world and culture without info-dumping. 4) Romance! This book had about 4 pages worth of actual romance, because it’s slow burn. As far as the content of those 4 pages: spicy. - Recommend for anyone who doesn’t mind slow burn romances, likes fantasy and drama, and a flawed but strong-willed lead.

Abby-bash-lor

Read it.. It’s the best. Slow romance burn. Character individuality and growth. Minor predictability with a twist. I can’t wait to start book 2.

Da Ultimate Frog

Wow. This book is great! It has the the regular YA things which a lot of the time make books boring, but somehow this was great! 100% recommend.

ShootForTheEdit

The best bad book of 2018. 👍. Its fascinating how good The Cruel Prince is, considering how many things are wrong with it. I mean... it... it's bad. Or... I mean... it should be. But... it's not. W-what? 🤔🙃 It seems to embrace every trope and stereotype, not just in fae fantasy, but in YA fantasy as a whole. (I would list them off, but just think of all the ones you can and, yeah, they're here). And that’s where this book somehow succeeds. It takes everything bad that a book shouldn’t do, and does them in a good way. And even more impressive, gets away with it. I was well aware how blatantly this book cheating my experience, it’s like Holly Black just took all the best concepts from a bunch of different sources and put them all into one book, but it was doing such great job of it that didn’t care. But I do want to quickly mention the 3 biggest flaws that would all but condemn any other book: - (As previously stated) Complete unoriginality to the point of borderline laziness. - Wildly inconsistent pacing. - And (yeah, I'm nitpicking here) an utterly nonsensical hierarchy. And in spite of all of this, it still manages to have an emense amount of entertainment value. Jude's journey from outcast to a... psuedo-queen type person (again, weird hierarchy) is actually pretty good, and turns into a sort of Game of Thrones-esque type suspense. Whose gonna die next? Whose gonna be king? As often as all its concepts have been done before, they still remain interesting. But that fact is that The Cruel Prince relies heavily on the tried and true of an already oversaturated genre, and has absolutely NO right to be good, yet somehow... it is.

Romance reader :)

Wow. Just wow.. So when I first saw this book I was like,”Hm, I guess it looks kind of good.” And then I looked at the author and I was like,”OMG I REMEMBER HER FROM THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES (which is a great series btw)!” So I HAD to read this book. I did not regret it one bit. This is now my second favorite book (after Red Queen which you should read if you enjoyed this book). If you are reading this, you shouldn’t be, because you have to be reading the book! Get to it!!!

Slow so dreadfully slow BUT. It took me so long to get into this book due to its slow pace and slightly boring beginning but I'm really excited to read the second one now after finishing. Part two is excellent! Cant wait to see what Jude and Cardan will end up as.

AMAZING. I haven’t been able to find any great books that really keep me captivated, but I literally just finished the final book of this series after starting it THREE DAYS AGO!!! You will not regret reading this!! It sort of reminds me of The Red Queen but written in a more fairytale setting (and obviously a different plot)! Pls read!!

World building and court intrigue. This was fascinating! I stumbled upon this book because other recommended this from reading other books I’ve read and I was absolutely fascinated! I will say the start was a little slow for me but it was only the first few chapters, I was a little confused but I love fully understanding what I’m reading so I went back and reread them and got it. (I don’t think you’d have to do that to understand it!) I loved the idea of not knowing who to trust with the fairies because realistically you don’t know with them. The lead female is powerful and passionate and I love that she is solidly fighting for what she believes in throughout. The world building combined with court intrigue take the reader on one crazy journey that even they can’t be sure how to navigate. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was because of the slow/confusing start but I would say it’s more of a 4.5!
