Bound by tradition. Now they must follow the rules.

SHORTLISTED FOR THE WOOLLAHRA DIGITAL LITERARY AWARDS 2017

Aldara is sixteen when she is sold to the obnoxious crown prince as a gift for his brother. Forced to leave the only life she has ever known, Aldara is sent to Archdale Castle, where she is mentored to become Prince Tyron's perfect Companion. But no amount of lessons can prepare her for the troubled man marked by war. He sees straight through the polished exterior presented to him. He sees her.

All Prince Tyron wants is privacy to grieve. When his brother gifts him a Companion upon his return, he is forced to embrace a tradition he has so far managed to avoid. Except Aldara is not like the others. She walks with her face to the sun and arms swinging. Her laughter makes him forget the lie. But if they ignore the rules that safeguard them, there will be consequences.

This is book one in The Companion series. If you enjoy dark medieval romance, then this epic tale of love against all odds is for you.

Trigger warning: This book contains sexual violence, death, and dark themes intended for mature audiences.

Please note: This is part one of Tyron and Aldara's story. Their story continues in books two and three—available now.

True Romance. This book is historical in the sense that it is set in a time similar to the Middle Ages, yet it is in a fantasy land (no monsters or magic though!). I adore this book. All of the characters are well developed and the feelings and concerns of the characters are very realistic considering their positions and relationships. There's also a sense of adventure in this book that is exciting and complements the attraction developing between main characters. Book two is just a good, and I can hardly wait for the final in the series to come out so that I can see if the hero and heroine finally get their happy ending!

Lainie9999

Grammar matters. I would like to remind the author: “never end your sentence a preposition with.”

The Royal Companion by Tanya Bird. Astounding reading experience for all medieval period literature lovers. Entertaining and full of spellbinding twists and turns that keep the reader wanting more. The characters leap off the pages and follow you into your own dreams of fiction versus reality. Definitely looking forward to the next book to satisfy my continuous thirst for revenge to take place with the evil characters who want only deception and tragic outcomes for the truly amazing men and women who are trying to make a difference in the lives for themselves and other hard working people. The Royal Companion. Love love love this book! Well written with good plot and characters. Keeps you hooked.

Tiggy/Cookie

The Royal Companion. First time reading this author. There were parts Of this book I liked. It was an imaginative story. The characters names were distracting and there were so many that it was difficult to remember who they were. I don’t think it was interesting enough to read the second book.

Bethe/Oh.

Wonderful. This book along with its sisters in the series are all well written and captivating from beginning to end. My only issue is that they are not stand alone stories.

Daisymay36

The Royal Companion. I didn’t know what to expect when I first started reading but Aldara and Tyron Love story has to be one of the best ever written. As soon as I was done reading the first book, I had to read the other ones. The whole series brought every possible emotions, I laugh, I cried and felt as if I was going through every steps with them. Thanks for sharing those stories with us. Étienne’s mom

Love. I started reading this book just 2 days ago and I’ve finished it already. After the first couple of chapters I got hooked! Such a good story. Will be reading the next book and I can’t wait to read more of the story.

Historic at its best. Hmm what can I say? It was an amazing read! I loved every bit of it. I do have my reservations to the unruly Zoelins but in all, I love the story line and the fact that when love was depicted, it was done in a sweet way. I look forward to read the other books in the series! Tanya Bird has definitely joined my hall of fame for amazing authors!

Absolute Love It. I was so pleasantly surprised by this book, this story, these characters and Tanya Bird! I had never read any of her books but this story intrigued me, so I picked it up, and in under 50 pages I was absolutely obsessed, I loved the main character, I loved the supporting characters and I love the story! It is absolutely beautiful and so unique! I am definitely obsessed with these books! I definitely recommend this book and every book that comes after it. I will definitely be reading this book again and that does not. Happen a lot for me! Such a great book.

Unique and beautiful. This book takes the reader on an adventure to a setting far away from present day. The book is set in a time before the luxuries and comforts we have today. You all know by now I love a good map. This book starts with a map of the world created by Tanya Bird. This is where I love to start and as I read consider where certain characters originate. Often the names of the characters coincide with the names of the land and/or it helps to give more insight to both the characters and the land. I loved the uniqueness of the names. I was fascinated by connecting the dots in this book. However, at the start I was certainly struggling to keep all of the characters right in my mind. In summary, to wrap up my long winded answer, the names are unique and beautiful. I really enjoyed the writing in this book. I was able to read this book with ease and enjoy the story being told without any distractions. The flow was wonderful and really helped to tell a devastating story with true depth. I never lost interest while reading this book and really found myself not only intrigued, but experiencing a few skips of the heart. This book is something that can be enjoyed by a mature reader who can handle a bit of sexual situations with undertones of dark situations. It is not graphic or disgusting. It is real and raw. It may be tempting to just read the same old love story ignoring the terrible things hiding under the surface, but it is quite a bit more satisfying to experience the trauma through reading a book like this and consider how brave the characters must be to undergo such pain. Complexity, heartbreak, and survival. This story will take you on a truly unique experience leaving you breathless.

CataClaws

Amazing. I absolutely loved this book! A romance that shows how life in the Middle Ages really was, kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time!

Blackdragonashes

Disgusting and horrible. I am glad it was free or I’d demand my money back. I will never read a book by this author again or anyone they endorse because they don’t know a good book if it hit them in the face.

Tom oy

The royal companion. I wS very disappointed in the ending.I know we are supposed to buy follow up books but I find I have waisted time. You can always end one book and continue the story leaving the reader both satisfied and anxious for more.I will not be reading more.

SullivanAdams

Phenomenal. Great story line. Beautiful detail and character development. Loved this!

A very moving read.. I wasn’t sure if I would like this book when I started reading. Aldara and Hali’s friendship was like reading about friends I hadn’t heard from in a while. After chapter 2, I was totally hooked. Prince Tyron and Aldara’s love story brought tears to my eyes. To read about the PTSD he was living through was so hard to hear him live with but so warming to read how Aldara stayed right beside him to help him fight his demons. I can’t wait to read the remaining books in the series.

Kingjimmy1231

Okay. It has lots of romance but a bit of violence to

Beckypeaches

Worth the read!. This whole series was AMAZING. I couldn’t stop reading, from the first page I was hooked! I wish it was longer.

💚Grace💚

Felt unfinished. The book was captivating and brilliantly written however the first book had no real ending and felt like the author just decided to move onto the next without giving the first a closing.

Brandiswine

Addictive brain candy!. Fantastic historical romance. Tried the first book in the series and couldn’t put it down till I read all three. Can’t wait for the next one

Shufflebawtartpop

Lost the plot. The book was okay but it had way too many characters that are thrown in to add no value to the book at all. We could’ve easily written out most people mentioned. On top of that the characters had extremely difficult names and the main characters name was so common with others. It took me about 50 characters to understand who the main character is and when you find out, she is not likable. I felt 0 chemistry and the r*pe scene seem so unneeded. It comes out of no where and then it’s left. Not discussed. She just sleeps with main character next day. Yeah.... not worth the read in my opinion.

Sterpy

Love!!. I loved the entire series! Couldn’t put them down and I’m sad to let these characters go. Definitely a series I will re-read more than once! My heart broke reading the first book and I actually sobbed my way through one particular scene. I don’t think I have ever had that happen on a book I was reading. I was happy to see characters return in the other books as I was not ready for their stories to end.

Ajcarey713

🙌🙌. This story line is exceptional!

R.Amrine

Loved this book!. I really enjoyed reading this story. It was difficult to put down, and when I did, I thought about getting back to it. I can’t wait to read the next book to learn more about Aldara and Tyron.

Saebensivy

Loved it. Easy reading and loved the story. Was easy to love certain characters & easy to hate others. Finished the three book series in a week - great timing to find it during covid-19 quarantine. Will continue with the other stories!

Stresstomax

No ending… frustrating!. The story was interesting. I liked it, but what happened to an ending of any kind? It just stopped and left me seriously hanging!

Bchng

GREAT. IT WAS AMAZING BUT I WISK IT HAD A LITTLE MORE ROMANCE TO IT AND MORE JOKING AND MESSING WITH EACH OTHER ❤️👌🏼👌🏼IT WAS WONDERFUL AND I APPRECIATE YOUR CREATIVITY

Mimiarriaga93

Enthralling!!!!. When I downloaded the book I thought it was going to be cheesy like a lot of the other books I’ve read. Boy was I wrong. I can’t wait until the next one comes out!

MrsMoniiG

I was hooked from Book 1. This series has changed how I felt about reading my books thru my phone. I loved the throughout non traditional plot but the characters when they’re described ....I was so absorbed in it I could picture everything as I was reading. That’s how I know a great author because being able to capture me and get lost in a book (between being a mom of 7 and a hubby) can be hard. But I looked forward to coming to bed at night and reading. Sneaking little breaks during the day to read. The Companion series are amazing. I am on pre-order for the newest one but am so heartbroken it will be the last!

Takerhisnicknameplease

Pleasantly surprised. I picked this book on a whim, not really going into it with high expectations... but I loved it. Looking forward to reading more.

Mntmom2

The Royal Conpanions. Loved this book as well as the second.. I’m not normally one to write reviews but felt there weren’t enough for how many emotions these books caused.. I literally laughed out loud on occasions and at times was brought to tears... fantastic story and not as predictable as some romance novels can be.. can’t wait for the third book.

Punkachew

Loved the whole non traditional story!!. Was a great read that didn't have a traditional time or type of story. If you are looking for something interesting and very well written give this a try. 👍👍👍 Can't wait for next installment!!

Boom Boom Tanner

Angst, heartbreak, and life after.. I really enjoyed this book. I read it when it first was published and it was very moving. The ending left me wanting so much more of the story and I’m happy to see the series is greatly expanded now. Other reviews show it’s not everyone’s cup of tea; it deals with dark themes that, while fictional, are not uncommon in history, as well as in less elevated life circumstances today. If you like a book with angst, heartbreak, and moving forward after, this one is a good one.

Coastiechick

Best read of the year!. I started reading this book and finished it in about 12 hours! This book touched my soul and I cried so hard! I recommend it to everyone I can!

AK_Reignbow

Love the storyline.. Amazing story I couldn’t put down. Can’t wait to read the second book.

Riggsey3K

The Royal Companion. I consider myself an avid reader of historical romance. As soon as I finished the description of Royal Companion, I immediately wanted to read it. Forbidden love is a topic I enjoy exploring. It was 10:00 at night and I was just going to read the first few chapters, however, every hour that passed, I told myself only one more chapter. Until...well, you all know how that ends. Aldara and Tyron are so well written, I cannot stop thinking about their story and what will happen next. Every character was so well developed, I hope to be exploring them for years to come, as they each have their own series (hint, hint)!!

Kiwidaughter

It’s not a complete book. It’s not badly written, but i have a peeve about books that don’t even pretend to be stand-alone stories. Series are super popular, I get it, but usually each book tells an episode and then sets up the next book by introducing some new threat (of whatever) that will carry the reader to the next book. This doesn’t even pretend to do that. It literally just ends with no warning, so joke’s on you, you bought 2/3 of a story and must buy another book, if the story interests you enough to fork out another several dollars.

Straighttalker198

No. Felt like the word companion was just replacing an uglier name like sl*t or ho* didn’t think the book was good

Whisked me away. As a toddler mom, I'm mostly stuck in the mundane. With COVID, working and parenting at home all at once all the time. This season, I've been diving into books to keep my sanity (and because it's so important for kids to see adults reading for enjoyment!). I've been collecting a number of books on my kindle and once I started The Royal Companion, I didn't want to put it down. The love and the pain of Aldera's ups and downs were palpable. The problems facing the kingdom were complex. The Prince's metaphorical demons were consuming. I've continued on to more in the series and am so happy there's a number of them! I'm intrigued by many subplots. Thank you, Tanya Bird, for whisking me away to this beautiful, complicated land. Trigger warning: one rape scene that you could skip and sex trafficking Don't let the heavy topic stop you, it builds in well to the plot and the trials of the kingdom.

Danner0330

Great read!. Kept me captivated the entire time

WinterMagnolia

Dark, Depressing and Left Wanting. The sword hanging over Aldara, the Companion / heroines head in this book is visible within a few chapters of this dark story. Even the idea and eventuality of the wonderful prince who owns her isn’t enough to alleviate the tension of the day to day life and unknown but likely sad future of a Companion rules every page. I kept waiting for the sword in the shape of the delusional heir-prince to swoop down and end her life. Aldara suffers in multiple ways but I didn’t find it to be an uplifting story of a young woman overcoming a bad life or even a telling of a strong woman fighting for her rights. Rather I found it constantly depressing with no intermittent relief to make it palatable. This is not what I look for when I read for entertainment. If I want to read about slavery or groups or individuals being used as chattel I’ll read historical novels. Bottom line? If you don’t mind reading a dark story about a type of slavery, jump in, the waters cold.

Terrific!. I loved this book! The characters are well developed and the plot is well developed. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

Mishkarose

The Royal Companion. I loved this book and the entire series but I recommend purchasing all three novels at once so you can continue to experience the amazing roller coaster of emotions without interruption! It was hard to go to work as I didn’t want to stop reading. This author, Tanya Bird, is seriously talented. If I were a movie producer I would be knocking on her door.

K.sigmar

Amazing and captivating. Honestly couldn’t stop reading. Beautifully written and pulls you into another world, making you want more.

Fidee82

Great book. Brilliant read, couldn’t put it down!

:) :) :) :)!!!!!!!!!.

Fantastic. Great book can't wait for the next one

PYRL.xx

Companion. Interesting read. The general idea of the storyline has been used over and over again: kingdom with an evil, arrogant heir, a good hearted second son who goes to the wars, a damsel in destress who falls for the second son. War on the boarders in medieval times is also a must. The idea of companions isn’t a new one either, specifically with the existence of harems in royal families of certain countries. Honestly, I don’t think this book is very original, but it is well written. Especially with the perspectives of the two main characters and the internal turmoil they suffer through, the day to day grinds, etc. It look me a few tries to finish it though, so no all-nighters pulled for this one. Don’t know if I will carry on with the series since it took a lot of effort just to finish this one.

A.w.1987

Loved it!. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Great writing Tanya- I can't wait to read the next one.

Readeeergirl

Loved it. Absolutely loved reading this book! It was so good, so intense that I actually cried when the “tragedy” happened to Ardala. But why did it have to end like that? Can’t wait to download the next book to find out. Definitely recommend 👍

Nlw68

A brilliant page turner. A beautifully written story. I couldn't put this down. The characters were fantastic, but be sure to have the tissues handy as some parts of the story will leave you angry and sad. I can't wait for the next one.....

Blacksorrento

Unusual and captivating. Thoroughly enjoying this storyline. You can empathise with the young women who are bought as companions. Very thin line between being a companion or a prostitute, but if it means your family will not starve that is what you do. How you exist within that fraternity is up to the individual. They all have their own methods of coping. Well written, you are drawn in especially with two very likeable characters of Aldara and Tyron. Recommend the read 👍👍👍

TorzCam

Compelling!. I loved this story. It was compelling from start to finish and I fell in love with the characters. This is the kind of story that you get lost in and constantly look forward forward to picking up again and again. I can’t wait for the next one!

CJ RCAU

Books make the best companions. Complete page turner! Love these strong minded characters, learning a new landscape/kingdom/monarchy, the entire concept of this series is refreshing and dynamic! There is one really confronting scene and although it was difficult to read through, the plot following the event was enough to mend my semi broken heart! Thank you iBooks for featuring Tanya Bird in your charts this week!

Errylglynn

Page turner. I loved most of the characters and found the plot believable and interesting. I don't usually read historical romance stories but I was intrigued by this amazing story. I have bought book 2 and book 3.

SheBuilds

Demolished the series across the holidays. So happy To have found another author that I will follow overtime. Tanya Bird’s series is a bit Outlanderesque, GoT but not as complex or in-depth with detail. Easily and happily read. More please and soon!

Reachmishoo

Excellent. Definitely worth a read

Deelitefulness72

Both enthralling and heart rendering. The author has beautifully captured the strength of the main character Aldara. The romance was heart rendering and the twists were enthralling to suggest that we are going to hear a lot more from this author. I can't wait to read Tanya's next book.
