#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

GOODREADS CHOICE AWARD WINNER FOR MYSTERY/THRILLER

An addictive novel of psychological suspense from the author of #1 New York Times bestseller and global phenomenon The Girl on the Train and A Slow Fire Burning.

“Hawkins is at the forefront of a group of female authors . . who have reinvigorated the literary suspense novel by tapping a rich vein of psychological menace and social unease… there’s a certain solace to a dark escape, in the promise of submerged truths coming to light.” Vogue

A single mother turns up dead at the bottom of the river that runs through town. Earlier in the summer, a vulnerable teenage girl met the same fate. They are not the first women lost to these dark waters, but their deaths disturb the river and its history, dredging up secrets long submerged.

Left behind is a lonely fifteen-year-old girl. Parentless and friendless, she now finds herself in the care of her mother's sister, a fearful stranger who has been dragged back to the place she deliberately ran from—a place to which she vowed she'd never return.

With the same propulsive writing and acute understanding of human instincts that captivated millions of readers around the world in her explosive debut thriller, The Girl on the Train, Paula Hawkins delivers an urgent, twisting, deeply satisfying read that hinges on the deceptiveness of emotion and memory, as well as the devastating ways that the past can reach a long arm into the present.

Beware a calm surface—you never know what lies beneath.

Disappointing. Very hard to read. Characters changed from 1st to 3rd person oftentimes. Two many characters and poor plot between past and present. I loved Girl on the Train and the author would follow suit with this book. I don’t recommend.

Wxteacher

Into the Water. Great read! I couldn't put it down; the author is talented at weaving stories together from various points of view!

Dogkrazy

Too many narratives. Too many narratives. Too confusing. Not interesting. Stopped caring.

Tirbie

Slow Start but good twists. This was a good read with a slow start. Near the end things pick up and it’s more engaging.

Mazerunner 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

I loved it. I don’t get why people r saying it was confusing and hard to read Becuz it wasn’t they clearly weren’t focused on the book. It’s my favorite book ever. The ending was the best part. It’s a perfect ending. It was NEVER boring .

ZNaughton

Into the Water. Great read! Suspenseful with many surprises. Every time you think you know who did what you’re turned in a different direction.

Daniellerdh

Eh. Was so disappointed in this book, especially after all the hype surrounding it. Too many characters to keep track of and I just couldn't get into it like Girl On The Train.

Jayberryjanis

Inferior Reading Material. Don’t even try it without a cheat sheet of characters. Poor to no character development, dreary, lackluster plot development. I give it a 1-star since there’s no half. Wasted time and money.

Kim0930

Hard to follow. It was very confusing to follow the different characters. Each chapter is told from a different characters point of view. Very disappointed because I liked Paula’s other work.

Cyber_Grunt

Slow moving.... Not nearly as good as "The Girl on the Train "

Traveljunkie301

Disappointing. Poor sophomore read

Bookfinished

Good. Good book.

LGR1277

Into the Water. I couldn't put this book down. It captures your attention immediately and doesn't stop until the very last sentence. It's one of those reads that you dream about and wake up wanting to do nothing but finish it!

MikShae

Too many characters, very slow plot progression.. There are way too many characters in this book to keep up. It jumps around way too much. Plus, it is such a slow and drawn out plot. Very boring. I fall asleep reading it. Wishing for a refund.

XANDOZZ

Lackluster Ending. Definitely a book that kept me wanting more, I was just a bit disappointed with the way it turned out in the end. I was hoping for more.

Brittdean

Amazing Thrill. A thrilling mystery that has you questioning everything up until the very end. Highly recommend.

Kaykaybean13

Another incredibly written suspense novels!!. Paula Hawkins books keep getting better and better. I’m impatiently waiting for the next one! Extraordinary talent! Phenomenal characters and plot lines.

Yes that's me 123

Not worth the time. This book is not that I trudging, and feels as though the author had no idea where this story was going, then just decided on a random ending that has nothing to do with how the beginning of it really started. I suggest you not waste your time on this one.

Crashlynator

Disappointed. This is the first book I will not be able to finish. Incredibly hard to follow. Jumping characters and from 1st to 3rd person, it’s way too confusing. Such a let down, the girl on the train was so much better.

Ozcrome

Entertaining. This book was entertaining and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Similar to other reviews, I too had difficulty keeping track of all the characters until the latter portion of Part 3 when I had begun to know them better, but until then, I needed to frequently backtrack to remind myself who everyone was and where their storyline left off. This is a good book, but if you enjoyed The Girl on the Train as much as I did, it’s best that you lower your expectations and judge it on its own merits.

Golfcart2468

Kept me wanting to read. I thought the book was just okay, but somehow it still kept me wanting to read.

Biggggmike33

Amazing writing. Spoiler alert. First off, I loved the writing. The different characters and perspectives was unique. Y’all say it was confusing. I say it was great writing. It’s the little things that I notice that only that style of writing can capture. I loved this book. Not comparing to the girl on the train like so many other reviewers. Two different novels. This did not disappoint.

Apple User 1233

Just ok. Definitely not as good as girl on the train. Not thrilling. Mediocre and while there is a twist at the end it was just ok. I did find it jumped all around and trying to keep up with all the different characters was a pain.

JennAus

SO good. I couldn't put this book down. Very dark and so many interesting characters!

Bj_Watson12

Eh.. Eh. I feel like I can’t properly critique this one, because I was expecting so much more after reading The Girl on the Train. Interesting plot and a few good characters, but I felt like the multiple points of view were unnecessary. It would definitely be better as a TV series, I think.

Tailboard trash x3

Excellent read. Intriguing read that dives into those family relationships that shape our lives good or bad and the secrets that drive us apart. It's a good lesson in saying what needs to be said because tomorrow may be too late. Also just an edge on your seat who-dune-it that will keep you up late delving into each page until the author ever so gently whispers the truth

Yogurt Mamma

Into the Water. Twists and turns. Overall it kept me reading and trying to wrap up the story.

Paleo Schnauzer

This book drove me nuts trying to keep the characters straight.. Let’s face it. Lots of authors write chapters from characters’ perspectives. Some authors jump back it time to lay a bit of groundwork. That helps make the narrative more clear. And some authors jump back and forth from first person to third. And do so well. But this author failed miserably primarily due to a seemingly unrelated cast of characters and also by having far too many. I did not want to finish it, it was so awful. And not one sympathetic character did not help. Literally, I was not drawn to like any of them. I loved The Girl On The Train but this book was just plain hard work. Not enjoyable at all.

Asherr1

A very good read. This book was hard to put down. It takes some time and focus to keep track of the different characters and their vantage points but it’s worth the effort. I would have never guessed the ending.

Anne1224

Disappointed. Book was drawn out and hard to keep track of all the characters. I don’t like book where each character has their own chapters. It took me a long time to figure out where everyone fit in. Just couldn’t get into it and was hard to finish.

Aceshtx

Into the water. Enjoyed it overall, but ended too abruptly and left me certain answers of who did what. Maybe that was the author's intent.

Ivyland Bob

Into the Water. Great all the way till the end. Character development superb. Should be a major motion picture. Looking forward to Paula's next book.

Lady uphoff

Enthralling!. Left nothing to be desired, even with balancing so many different characters and their unique voices. I could not put this book down, a must read for any thriller novel enthusiast.

Ticked off Texan

Most anticlimactic thriller I’ve ever read. If you’re looking for suspense, look elsewhere.

FaithFilled&Thankful75!

A bit all over the place. I patiently followed each of the story lines, often referencing the table of contents to make sure I kept track of the characters. The more I read, the more I stopped caring about any of them and resigned myself to the "big twist" that was sure to come in the end. When I got there, sadly enough, I didn't even care. A tolerable read.

Luvme some reads

Into the water. This book had too many characters and it was very hard to follow. I am will stop reading it, but kept hoping it would get better, but it didn’t. The ending was very dull. Don’t waste Your money or time on this book. Very disappointed

Daynegirl

Book review. I kinda got lost with this book

Mcmartinez4

Disappointed. I was very excited to read this after girl on the train. I was very disappointed! There are so many characters to keep up with. Kind of confusing and quiet honestly I didn't even get the point of the whole story. I finished the book and was still very confused. Def don't recommend it.

Mle Verde

Many Characters, Maybe Too Many?. The story is told with 11 different people and although the mystery is fizzing, it’s hard to stay engaged and finish the story. It’s worth the read but not as consistently interesting as her other work.

WYR all day girl

Capturing. Every little twist this book had was so capturing... the character list can be confusing at first but once you know everybody it’s hard to not fall in love with this story

Sdfrdeghfrjed

Good read. I wish more things could’ve been explained, but the story was good. Not as bad as everyone’s saying. The ending should’ve been more.

Dadlab

Into The Water. Well developed characters. Deep and twisting plot that avoids cliches. Very well written. It was hard to put the book down.

Evilrhoda

Loose ends. There were a couple things that were never explained, which bothered me. It was good but the ending needed more information

Whtowl

Into the water.. Very hard to follow. Too many characters. Could have been a good story but this method of telling it is not worth reading.

Sarah_Ashleyxox

Loved it cover to cover.. I’m a huge Paula Hawkins fan, but I especially loved this novel! The changing perspective’s and timeline coming full circle with flashbacks. This is my second read of it and won’t be my last.

AHS2004

Disappointing. I had a problem with the constant change in narration and it was a bit confusing. A disappointment since I liked Girl on The Train so much.

Laptop Family

Very intriguing & worrisome for we, the troublesome.... Very intriguing! I'm going with a 5-star rating because I found myself thinking about this book quite often throughout the week that it took me to read it, and talking about it with other women, troublesome women, if you will. Each of which would remark something about it sounding like a book worth reading, or that it had an interesting plot, with that little bit of ominous fear hanging over our conversing, for what woman hasn't felt threatened or vulnerable towards a world in which men consider us to be troublesome and disposable?

Malaions56

Average. Very confusing organization.

J_a_x_

Difficult to Read. Men being terrible to women, we already live through that everyday. I need more stories where the women win. The narrative was jumbled, too much hinting at but skipping over important events, dragging out the mysteries, revealing but never explaining. How did he get the bracelet!? What did she do with his body?!

Kelbell19

Hard read. Into the water was a very hard read for me. What made it so hard was every chapter being focused on a new person. I felt like my brain had to rearrange itself to get into the new chapter. For most of the book when I got to the next chapter I thought okay who is this person again. Just confusing at times. I did like the storyline of the book and the whole history of witches bc I didn’t know that was a real thing at one point. I am a really big fan of Girl on the Train so I went in with very high expectations. Still a good read just too many characters and too much change every chapter.

Not the best but.... I had to really make an effort to keep reading the first half of the book and thus, by the end, had to piece the characters and story together. Amazing writer. Suspenseful work. I just got lost in the details. With Girl on the Train, I read it in one sitting.

Jade Cameron

Wonderful Read. Impressive storytelling. Kept me enthralled right until the very end. I can't wait to read her next book.

Andrea's Attic

A twisty, turning tale that is truly engaging. I think the only reason that I didn't give this four stars is because for perhaps the first third of the book, there were so many different characters that I had difficulty keeping them straight. That, however, may be my own weakness. Once you get a firm handle on all of the players, though, this novel is a well-constructed mystery with more than enough thrills to satisfy the most demanding reader. Kudos to Paula Hawkins, whose second novel is even better than her first!

Brunetta4u

Into the Water. Like a blender in reverse...choppy pieces that get put back together while slowly swirling until it stops and the final carrot is dropped in. I can visualize this becoming the next thriller movie!

Caro4art

Into The Water. It's definitely not as good as "Girl on the Train". Due to my schedule, I wasn't able to sit for long periods and read it. As a result, I found it hard to follow. It wasn't until 2/3 through that I knew who belonged to who. It was better then, but still disappointing.

Jos32991

Hard To Follow. I loved Girl on the Train so I was excited about this book. However, it is so hard to follow with far too many narrators.... I am a quarter through and I'm stopping.

KMcD 1974

Great book!. Couldn't put it down loved it beginning to end!

So-so. For as much hype as this book is getting, I was disappointed. Overall it was a so-so book with some periods more entertaining than others.

Ninaaaxx

Into the Water. I enjoyed reading this book although it started off a little slow in the beginning. The characters are complex but interesting . Very eerie read which I love ! I could live without the paranormal aspect of this book. Nicki Sage seemed useless in this book .

Juibgh

Made me want to go swimming. I liked it better than Girl on the Train because of the personification of the river and the pool. Even though it was a mystery, it drew me to the water and I felt empathy for it. I also enjoyed how it was a story about a town and its people and how everyone has been connected for a long time and through the river.

:0(. Does not live up to the girl on the train. Boring, predictable, definitely not a page turner

CWILSON28

Character struggle. The characters were hard to keep up with in the beginning of the book, but once I was able to grasp who everyone was, it was a great read!

Con795

Don't waste your time. I never got into this book. Between the endless characters and few connections among them, it was very difficult to get into a rhythm. I found this incredibly boring.

Heidnahe

Eh. It was okay. Had to force myself to read through several slow spots. This book was a let down compared to Girl on the Train.

Into the water. Very disjointed and not caring the end.

Anijb

Very underwhelming. Tough to follow in the beginning... then I figured it out halfway through. Paula even admits through the personification of a character that there are many unanswered questions in the end.

Dejurewicz129

Good book. Too many character point of views in my opinion. Over all good book. Not as good as Girl on the Train. That one is still my fav, but that could be because the storyline was a little easier to follow. And the twist at the end was much more shocking and detailed.

Msvoboda

Not great. I was really looking forward to this book, but it was disappointing. It kept my interest only because I was waiting for it to get better. It was confusing and difficult to keep the story straight. It read as if it had been written backwards. It didn't tie together in the end and left me frustrated.

Fugub

Predictable. Her first was mind bending. Never suspected the end. This second attempt the suspect was earmarked by the 4th chapter. Perhaps publisher pushed too fast for a follow up. Take ur time with the third. "Who dun it" should be a shock and greeted with a smile by the reader admiring how clever the writer was till the end.

Super Clock

Into The Water. The book is hard to get into. A number of characters and every chapter goes to another character. Also, slow reading. What ever happened to Mark? I would not buy this book again.

Charalyson01

Great book could have used some tweaks. I am a huge fan of the Girl on the Train and this book has many similarities. Telling the story in different prospectives especially outside of first person was a bit hard to follow but besides that the storyline was great and the story kept you guessing. However, I will say the ending could've been a little better as it was a let down and very predictable compared to the rest of the book.

Akinleye Ajayi

Good read. Don't like the ending however it's a lovely book overall.

Tayl22392

Not my favorite but keeps you reading. I thought i was the only one who had trouble keeping up with the jumping around and characters. then i read these reviews. It took me quite some time to actually get a grasp on who was who! I did think the characters were great, all flawed and real and ultimately the continuous twists kept you wondering, and i for sure kept reading.

Itunes Acct

THIS STORY IS AWFUL. I was so looking forward to another Girl on a Train. This book is so difficult to follow. It is boring and a total waste of money. I am struggling to finish it.

Rileycassandra

Too many characters narrating. The first half of the book is so hard to follow because there's just so many characters narrating the story. I couldn't grasp who was who and what story they were telling. The end didn't make sense either.

NurseNut6057

All over the place.... Not the page-turner I hoped for. Too many characters narrating. Gets confusing at points. Like others, debated not finishing it. Ending is a huge disappointment after all the time I invested in it. Bummer. I looked forward to this. Wasted my money.

ItsBelle

Liked it!. So different from The Girl on the Train. I liked the telling of the story by the different characters. It took a while to get what was going on. About midway the novel really takes off and you know what's going on. When I was 3/4 into it, I wanted to keep reading. That's when the pace picks up. A great read. I recommend it highly. Keep 'em coming, Paula Hawley!

A020731

Waste. Read half the book and I'm giving up. I have no idea what she is talking about, nor do I care.

Clmcc8402

Aweful. Cannot follow storyline what so ever. Girl on the Train was a one hit wonder.

KK&@!!

Very enjoyable summer read!. I enjoyed this book very much. Could have read it in one sitting if I had the time!! Great summer read

Teton Rose

Intriguing!. I was fascinated with this book and the questions kept me reading. All well and good, but once again this authors characters left me disappointed. They were all weak, flawed, and less real than real people I know. Love the suspense of the novel but miss having a character I can look up to! Yes perhaps I learn from these weak horrible people who have suffered terrible lives, but I don't want to read about them anymore. They make me depressed. Please improve the characters in the next novel. Make them strong and goal oriented and drug alcohol free! I want to read a book that makes me happy, not dark and moody.😞

Amigo73

Murder and mayhem in a tiny English town. The author serves up a cast of whacky, flawed characters, misunderstandings, and lies and serves it all up in a romping good read. Perfect for beside the pool reading this summer.

Yelps10056

Book is a little disjointed. At first, the book started off great...at one point I felt it was better than Girl On A Train..but then it took a turn. Overall, I wanted to complete the book, but there were too many small or nonsense storylines that made no sense. The book would at times present pieces of information that you think it would expound upon later in the book, but makes no mention. Just too many storylines with no connections.

Chase473

!!!. Great book!

Lauren DT

Somewhat Entertaining. I found the plot line to be interesting and somewhat entertaining but I never felt as though I couldn't put it down. It didn't feel very suspenseful and I was disappointed by the ending. Didn't hate it but wouldn't rush to recommend it either.

Knit Nammy

Only ok. This book was a confusing mess of unlikable characters. There really wasn't one character in this book that grabbed my attention. I loved Girl on a Train and had great expectations for this next book, but the first third of the book was a slog with too many characters to keep track of and tie together. Once I finally understood the plot, I thought, "aha! I bet there will be a gotcha climax!" But, that wasn't the case at all. The ending felt rushed, almost like the author couldn't really figure out what to do with all those characters, so she just...ended it! No surprise, no "gotcha"...just...wrap this thing up and let's all go home. Maybe the author was on a deadline and had to get the manuscript turned in, like, NOW! I hope her next book is better than this one!

Bigtiny in Oklahoma

Great book. This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. My first book to read by her and I can't wait to read another! Love it 💜

Good Read...2nd book always gets over critiqued. To be truthful, I had doubts whether this second novel would stand on its own. It did. Hawkins is such an elegant writer. The multi cast of 10 characters was not not as difficult to assemble as you would think (if in doubt, think about Tolstoy's WIP cast of characters, lol). It flows well and after the first 50 pages, I couldn't put the book down. Well done.

MementoDude

Major disappointment. I tried. I went through the first part. Started the second part hoping that something would happen that would make it worth my while. It didn't so I gave up. I loved her first book. But this absolutely didn't do it for me.

CBreezy717

Couldn't put it down!. I absolutely loved Girl on the Train, so was very excited to read this. At first I felt I may have a hard time following the different families and narrators and characters, but it became no problem. It felt so real and I loved the plot twists. Amazing work and cannot wait to read the next one.

Brat06

Disappointing. This was incredibly difficult to follow at first - there were so many narrators. When I finally began to follow the storyline it was a compelling read. The ending, however, seems to have been haphazardly put together. It's as though she grew weary of her characters and the story and just decided to wrap it up and be done with it. Too much left undone - I never did figure out what happened to a seemingly important character. I wouldn't not recommend this book. I would simply say to potential readers that it isn't as satisfying as her first book.
