The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“If youre looking for a book to take on holiday this summer, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo has got all the glitz and glamour to make it a perfect beach read.” —Bustle

From the New York Times bestselling author of Daisy Jones & the Six—an entrancing and “wildly addictive journey of a reclusive Hollywood starlet” (PopSugar) as she reflects on her relentless rise to the top and the risks she took, the loves she lost, and the long-held secrets the public could never imagine.

Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?

Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ‘80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.

“Heartbreaking, yet beautiful” (Jamie Blynn, Us Weekly), The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is “Tinseltown drama at its finest” (Redbook): a mesmerizing journey through the splendor of old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means—and what it costs—to face the truth.

I was mesmerized! I don’t want to spoil any details, but I was SO emotional over the ending!!! This book will stick with me for a very, very long time.

I would have never read this book if it were for a work book club that I figured I join just to change things a bit. I read this book in 3 days. I. COULD. NOT! PUT! THE! BOOK! DOWN!! Brilliant! Captivating! Love the most complex feeling that not one person in this world will agree to what it truly means, so long as the love you have is fulfilling and yours to appreciate in whatever way that may be.

Excellent read!

I could not stop reading !

Absolutely amazing.

This book was my life for a total of 3 days. Loved every second of it.

Loved it!!

This is a great book. Not at all what I expected. So many surprising, gut wrenching & uplifting moments of loss, love and life. Beautifully written. I recommend it to everyone interested in reading something different.

I couldn’t put it down! I stayed up late with this until the end. Great story

I could not put this book down!

I really enjoyed this book!!

This was a very nice book. Evelyn is an interesting piece of work!

Well done and entertaining

100,000,000/10

I honestly came into this book feeling like I was going to read the life story of Elizabeth Taylor or Rita Hayworth. None of which I was really interested in. But I love the way this writer wrote all around and threw a story. It was a very enjoyable wonderful read everybody should read it it’s just that nice❤️

Intriguing enough to want to know what happens

Top 3 books I've ever read. Wow. Wow. Wow. I needed a good book like this. It's been awhile.

A gripping story I could not put down thru laughter and tears.

I finished half of it on a three hour plane ride, it’s that good. As a southern Californian, it was easy to picture myself seeing this unfold on some of the scenery,as a person it made me recognize similar truths. I fell completely in love with this work. I really do wish these characters really had existed though.

Couldn’t put it down! The author provides just enough foreshadowing to help the reader feel smart, but saves just enough surprises to be exciting. As you read this book, you will inevitably become Monique.

my favorite book ever. easy to read quickly. got sucked into it quick. interesting plot. ❤️‍🔥

Couldn’t put it down

Great story from start to finish.

I enjoyed the story but it was more of an activist agenda book wrapped in an excellent title. If that’s what you like, this book’s for you. If not, look elsewhere.

This story had me captivated since I began. I couldn’t read through it fast enough. It definitely took me by surprise but I fell in love with Evelyn and her story.

i love

I loved the reading experience of this book! The story of Evelyn Hugo & her 7 husbands unfolds in the interview which, in turn, unveils the life and secrets of the main character. I loved being able to really sink my teeth into Evelyn’s life, AND I loved that we really got to see WHO she was throughout her life. Evelyn did change, but the change is so subtle throughout that you barely even notice it. until you’re reflecting on the book. Overall, I really enjoyed this and would not hesitate to reread in the future or recommend to a friend with similar reading taste! 😊

Such a good book. I read it in two days. It was hard to put it down. I was a little hesitant to buy it at first because it’s out of the normal that I would read. I was hooked and glued to the pages before husband #1.

This is the first book of Jenkins that I’ve read but I’m hooked!! An emotional roller coaster and I loved it!! Bravo! Great work!

I bought a copy so I can put it on the bookshelf with my favorite books. I will read this again

Wish I could read a second one. Monique at the end made me bummed

The other day I read Nora Roberts, Genuine Lies released in 1991. I had to go back to this book to see if the revelation was the same in both books. It wasn’t, but still…

I adored this story, but the writer’s prose was a little off putting for me. Just personal taste. It could have used some more description and flair for the beautiful story. Things seemed to move too fast and I found the descriptions and dialogue choppy at times. Overall, I’d read it again and give it 4.5 stars+ if I could, just not 5.

Fabulous story and beautifully written!! Couldn’t put it down!

I learnt much from this book and I could NOT put it down! I rarely indulge in the “Booktok” recommendations, however this was astounding!! 100/ 10 recommend this for any and everybody.

This book left me in tears when it ended. The writers vivid descriptions of each detail was exquisite. I imagined what it would be like to live in the 1960s. It’s a must read

Broke my heart , loved the full circle sense of how small the world is .

Will cut you to your core and hold a mirror up to the wound so you can marvel at how beautiful it is inside. Could not recommend more highly.

Just simply wow! Fantastic writing!

Way better than I thought it would be and way different that I thought it would be

Captivating. Truly captivating.

Simply amazing. I loved it and all the drama and truth. Absolutely astonishing.

Intriguing well written story from beginning to end! I finished it in a day, it was that good!

Beautiful heartbreaking story Great love story.

This book takes you on such a wild ride. You visualize the life of Evelyn Hugo so vividly. These people, these characters - All real in my mind. I feel like I knew them in my lifetime. Absolutely stunning read. Perfectly written. I was completely immersed. 10000/10 recommend.

So much more than an insight into female love. It’s an insight into the way we think about ourselves and justify the ways we move through life.

it was hard to put down, you get pulled into the pages by Hugo herself. She just feels so real. Such a complex character, I find it hard to dislike her regardless of what she does.

Read it twice already and I’ll keep on rereading this one for a long time to come.

I loved this book so much. Had me on a roller coaster of emotions. In my top 10.

such a captivating story. i would highly recommend!

A real page turner…I didn’t want to put it down and I didn’t want it to end!

It was soooo good I could not put it down! The plot-twist at the end was well done. You won’t be disappointed!

I think this book is overrated. Don’t get me wrong the storytelling is exciting about the many lovers of a Hollywood actress. But with all the reviews and hype I read from book recommendations, I was expecting more. I don’t know. I will command the love story in this book is compelling and original. I guess you never really know the true lives of celebrities. It goes to show who manipulates the media to shelter or control their image. Great book but too much overhyped in my opinion.

Love the timeline of this story. Mostly loved Evelyn Hugo 😌

The true meaning of love is lost on this author. A story chalked full of lust and women demonstrating masculine traits. Wouldn’t recommend.

This book got me hooked from the beginning, the ending pulled at my heart strings.

There is something so beautifully tragic about Evelyn Hugo’s story, so much so that it completely captivated me for 5 hours. Amazing read, thank you.

Incredible read. I could not put this book down. No matter your topic of interest, it seems to touch on all of them. Beautiful story of love and hate and humanity. MUST READ!

I loved how the main character Evelyn shows us that nothing is ever black and white. No relationship or event and reactions to so are uncomplicated. I quickly became attached to learning about Evelyn and found myself wanting to know more. I just wish the book was longer!

It’s an easy read- the story moves along swiftly and there plot twists and turns to keep you interested. But the writing and character development are lacking subtlety - every trait and thought is spelled out and explained as if the main character’s therapist wrote it. The language is simple, which isn’t necessarily bad. I just didn’t find it memorable. Not something I’d read twice.

The book is a simple easy read with predictable ending. I just plowed through it because I bought it. I wouldn’t recommend it

Great current themes and captivating read

Incredible story with a twist I did not see coming absolutely amazingly written

I’m not much of a reader but I loved the book and can honestly see this being made into a mini series or movie. The ending took me by surprise but the author has a good way of story telling and character development. I recommend this to anyone who wants to get into reading.

Breathtaking. Heartbreaking. I seriously could not put this book down. Old Hollywood and modern day meet in this story. You will not be disappointed.

I loved this book so much. Had me on a roller coaster of emotions. In my top 10.

such a captivating story. i would highly recommend!

I started reading this book back in January/February. It started to get slow and I started school, so I stopped reading it for a few months. I’m SO glad I picked it back up at the end of my semester. Evelyn’s story is so twisted that you forget for a while that she’s telling the story to Monique. Out of her seven husbands, Harry will always be my favorite. The twists in the last 50 pages had my jaw dropped and eyes watering. Great book, easy to read within a few days, I’d recommend to anyone who doesn’t like all that sappy romance stuff.

I hated this book. It’s unsatisfying and predictable. It doesn’t feel original in anyway.

I loved every minute of this book! Never a dull moment.

So well written, captivating, I couldn’t put it down

The first two chapters I wasn’t sure if I would read this book, it was hard to get into. After the first two chapters I was absolutely hooked. This book is very interesting and complex and hard to put down!

A great read!

F-ing amazing

The best book I’ve read in so long

While this book felt like it ran at a slower pace, I would still find myself staying up late to continue reading. It kept you interested and shocked you in all the right places. I would recommend this book, for sure. ❤️

This book exceeded my expectations and I will not forget it for a long time.

Kept on wanting to know more, then surprised at the end!

The richness of the characters innermost feelings and thoughts, framed the glamour, mystery and tragedy of the Hollywood bombshell. Catching the reader in a fascinating web of wonder that comes with the warning of secrets, sexual diversity, and deceit. At last, after twists and turns and many husbands described with full disclosure, the author, wraps it all up with the inevitable .

Previously, in my review of Project Hail Mary: No book is perfect. I take that back; this book is perfect. It’s been my TBR list since before it even came out. I got an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) a couple months before the release, had every intention on reading it, and for some reason didn’t. Over the years since its release, I’ve heard time and time again how good it is, and time and time again I told myself that I’d read it, and didn’t. Well, I’ve finally given in. And I must say, this book deserves ALL the hype. It achieved something that no other book has, it’s the only book to ever make me fight back tears. And is a strong contender for what might be my favorite love story of all-time. 😭❤️ “When you’re given an opportunity to change your life, be ready to do whatever it takes to make it happen. The world doesn’t give things, you take things. If you learn one thing from me, it should probably be that.” An unforgettable journey through time and a raw look at what many people are willing to do for fame, but never loses sight of what is most important. “When you write the ending, Monique, make sure the reader understands that all I was ever really looking for was family. Make sure it’s clear that I found it. Make sure they know that I am heartbroken without it.” On top of being one of the most compelling life stories ever told, the entire book you’re wondering why Evelyn has chosen Monique to write it, and the reveal is 1000% worth it. The last line is the perfect encapsulation of this book. From the beginning, and throughout reading it, your interest is in her seven husbands. But by the end, they become nothing more than moments in her life, and you’re much more interested in her and her true love. A perfect love letter to the LGBTQ+ community. 👩‍❤️‍👩 When I do my 2022 wrap up & review, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo will no doubt be my pick for the best book I read this year.

I considered reading this for quite some time before actually making the purchase. I have to say it’s one of the best books I’ve ever read, and I suspect I’ll re read it more than once. Truly an excellent well written book.

Best book EVER.

I laughed, I cried, I exclaimed out loud several times. I felt like I was “there” during the time when sexuality was a torrid secret. Amazing book. Well done!

I haven’t read a book this quickly in a long time and I think these women will stay with me for a long time as well.

Loved this book. Kept me engaged from the very first page until the end.

This story is why I read. I search and search for a story so unlike anything I ever read. A story so unlike my own. A story with complex characters. A story with heart. A story that transports me to another world. And when I find those stories, I can do nothing but give them 5 stars, sit here stunned and think about what I just experienced.

A very easy read. It pulls you in slowly like a soft breeze from calm waters. The author’s approach to presenting the story makes you feel as if you’re there barring witness to Evelyn Hugo’s story as it being told and seeing it as it happened. If asked the question; “should I read this book” my response would be, definitely!

LOVED the character development, plot, everything! Very engaging and such an entertaining and different way to talk about love and romance.

Couldn’t put it down! Finished it in two days.

definitely had me questioning everything at the end but such a good story and a great great read.

Excellent start to finish 🙌🏻👏🏻🙌🏻

A beautifully written story that explores the nuances of love and life.

A great read, you’re never going to want to put it down. I have two copies of it, for what ? i have no idea but i’m immensely in love with this book.

I loved this book and then it started to feel like propaganda and then I merely liked it. I wish it would have focused more on the history of old time Hollywood and less on the fact that Evelyn was bisexual. I take no issue with the fact that Evelyn was bisexual but, I do find it to be one of her least interesting character attributes.

I haven’t been able to stomach a fiction novel in years, but I picked up the E-book for this last week and have been absolutely sucked in. TJR grabbed me from the first page and never let me go until I exhaled on the last page. So many praises to sing here, and in particular her descriptions are so electric. Really grateful for the highlight feature as I’ve highlighted so many turns of phrase throughout.

Slow to start, but really really surprising ending! Was not expecting this drama!

There are so many great reviews for this book and mine may seem insignificant. But if the author is reading this by chance, brava for writing something so captivating and relatable even if I’m not a movie star. What an amazing story to get lost in. Cheering for an unexpected love that was memorable and keeps me hopeful for my own search for what love it. Thank you Taylor!

Couldn’t put the back down. Amazing storyline. Was not expecting the twist.

…..at all

I’m a first time reader of Ms Jenkins-Reid and i couldn’t put this book down. The human insights, the absolutely spot on joy, pain, and the secrets to a life well lived make this book a must read. There will be moments of breath taking clarity most of us never find in life. You will love, hate, envy and cry for Evelyn Hugo but you won’t forget her.

This book is absolutely breathtaking and heartbreaking. It shows a certain complexity that a single human can hide. It tells a tale of love to long for, of love to do awful and disgusting things for. I fell in love with these characters and the way it was written. I’m actually quite upset to be finished. But this book will now forever be a favorite. And it’s complexities are truly a thing I will be thinking about for months to come.

Pace was a bit slow but story itself was amazing to read. Often felt like Evelyn was directly telling you her story.

obviously, this book is recommended by a lot of people for a reason. i was hesitant to dive into it because of the name. but i was surprised how captivating it actually was. the characters were too relatable at time, and i cried at the end- i’m a crybaby. i could see myself in just about all the characters. loved the integration of newspaper excerpts throughout the reading. one of my favorite books i think i’ll read EVER. u are not gonna be disappointed.

Loved it!

This book was well written and entertaining from beginning to end.

I couldn’t not read it.. after all the people talking about it. This is not my typical read however, I could not put it down. Loved the flow and what the book taught me. I am happy to have read it!

You had me at smash the Patriarchy. I’ll read every book you ever write because of the first line of your book, and it was only the dedication. 😘

Absolutely heartwarming and heartbreaking and gripping

Incredibly written. Kept me up nights & had me savoring every word. Did not want it to end!

I truly enjoyed reading this book. It was a delightful experience and at times I was laughing out loud, or tearing up. It’s complex, exciting and original to say the least. I will be recommending to all of my friends.

Great read and a different story to tell with a nice twist.

An unexpected read. I seen it was on the bestseller list and picked up a paperback from a local book shop. I couldn’t put it down. That cover photo is everything and more.

This book is not what it seems by the title. It’s such a good thriller and wasn’t just another book about a movie star like I thought it would be.

absolutely incredible book, the storyline is some how heart warming and heartbreaking at the same time. read it now. like right now.

I really enjoyed reading this wonderful story
