The essential universe, from our most celebrated and beloved astrophysicist.

What is the nature of space and time? How do we fit within the universe? How does the universe fit within us? There’s no better guide through these mind-expanding questions than acclaimed astrophysicist and best-selling author Neil deGrasse Tyson.

But today, few of us have time to contemplate the cosmos. So Tyson brings the universe down to Earth succinctly and clearly, with sparkling wit, in tasty chapters consumable anytime and anywhere in your busy day.

While you wait for your morning coffee to brew, for the bus, the train, or a plane to arrive, Astrophysics for People in a Hurry will reveal just what you need to be fluent and ready for the next cosmic headlines: from the Big Bang to black holes, from quarks to quantum mechanics, and from the search for planets to the search for life in the universe.

Amazinf. What can I say? I feel smarter after reading this, means it did it’s job.

Review of A for P in a H. Taking vast amount of information, intricate, proven, assumed, and interpret in such a way as to allow the average person to make sense and understand was impressive. With the coincidence or the solar eclipse, I took the time to read this book, listen to his course in Great Courses titled My Favorite Universe, and to listen to his podcasts. Neil's style include humor, with everyday thoughts process Love it. Would like to know Dr. Tyson's thoughts on the book by Deepak Chopra, You Are The Universe. Same information, different conclusion.

Review. This book is entirely well written and a pleasure to read. I enjoyed the insight on DeGrasse Tyson’s opinions and beliefs surrounding these somewhat well-known theories. Overall a beautiful book.

From the Beginning. I have believed for sometime now that mankind has suffered from a crisis of meaning for some time that has fed and deepened a general disconnectedness among us. No religion, social structure, or economic incentives are enough to bind us all universally. It may be that we need to look to the universe and our place in it to find that connective tissue and define a comprehensive mission towards understanding it better that can evoke a meaning to being like nothing else. Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s primer on Astrophysics triggers this reflective philosophical thinking. It reminds you how little we know of our Earth and Universe and ultimately ourselves. From the beginning of everything to what we know now and the scientific process that filled in the gaps along the way. We learn that everything that makes us what we are is what makes the bodies of the universe what they are as well. Making us a part of a bigger picture; an image of existence so large we cannot see it all at once. These sorts of ideas and the 101 instruction on astrophysics makes this a must for anyone who loves science or wants to dive deeper in it without melting their brain. The audio format is perhaps the best so you can enjoy Tyson’s documentarian smooth radio voice and candor on all manner of topics. In a world where science and scientific research are under attack, it helps to have tools like this for arming yourself ahead of your next debate. More importantly, a bigger perspective on what we have in common more than what divides us.

A Must-Read

Astrophysics. I bought this on a whim, and I am so glad I did! The science is incredibly accessible and enjoyable -- the author utilizes great analogies and common language without condescending to non-scientifically astute readers. He creates an astounding picture of the power, the enormity, and the connection between every aspect of the fabric of space-time fro earth through the solar system, the universe, and beyond. Part science, part philosophy, an amazing read I highly recommend for everyone! This will be my Gift Book this year for my family and friends!

Mark737356

Psuedo-intellectual blowhard. Overrated pop science spewed. A poor man’s Carl Sagan.

Jteppinette

Interesting But Poorly Written. There are some interesting pieces of information and good history lessons, but the writing is very dull and feels like it’s written by someone who loves to hear themself talk.

Mejia_A

Wonderfull. This book is a great book for any one interested in astrophysics and how the universe was created. Also including dark matter and how quirks work a tad bit

Tjcosmos713

This crazy. Only a few pages in and my mind is blown and already my favorite book

Konaj0e

Fun read. Makes a heavy, technical subject accessible to layman readers. While parts may require re-reading, they are few. I learned several new facts which makes the read for me valuable. I recommend it.

Menyo

Tough, but worth it. For those who have no prior expertise in astrophysics (like myself), this book is a tough read. But, it is still great!! While some of the topics and subjects you may not understand right off the bat, with a couple extra minutes of re-reading the material, you will begin to understand enough to get you through the book. It is 100% worth it and really explains the basis of the universe and puts the universe in great perspective!

Fortesias

Deep in the cosmos; a transformative read. Informative, poetic and touching.

Book review of Astrophysics for people in a hurry.. The most amazing book to which I’ve ever exposed myself. The author created a new world, especially spiritually to myself. A must read for everyone.

Des3v07

Greatness. Loved it from page one.

ScaleGoddess

Best read!!. Neil is talented in telling astrophysics to anyone whether a novice to physics or expert.

Rfdlyons

Work For It. Had to force myself to keep reading, but learned quite a bit. Worth the struggle to keep reading. Author is amazing!

Menasha-man

Not too big, not too small- just right. An encapsulation of a complex subject done with clarity, organization and technical restraint. Well done, and appreciated!

Josh.dud

Interesting. I loved this book and it really peaked my interest o. Things I am constantly thinking about.

GwenC65

Fascinating. I expected this to be another rehash of Stephen Hawking’s Brief History, but it is entirely different and speaks of discoveries that probably weren’t even made at that time. Very open-ended, leaving room for discoveries being made as we speak. Opens up the universe for the layman, although one probably needs some prior knowledge for it to make sense. While our knowledge is growing exponentially, this book makes me realize, more than I did before, how little we really do know of what there is to be learned. The more that is learned, the more we realize we don’t know. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in what’s around them.

Sabritas52

Amazing Read!. Must Read!!

Panda1949

Simply wondeful!!. Great explanations of astrophysics and the newest discoveries. All in terms the every day person can grasp! A must read if you want to understand the building blocks of the world in which we live.

Rhinosandy III

Knowledge is Power. A great read for a non math person. The last chapter alone justifies the price of this book.

Acreads

A thoughtful read. If I’m honest, I did not understand every chapter in this book! That said, it made me feel connected to humanity and space and the universe. Made me contemplate my smallness is a very good way. I have gone back and reread several chapters, and know I will come back to this again and again.

BobBalfe

Loved it!. Very easy to read with quick short anecdotes where even the least person into astrophysics will be able to understand. This book still sits on my coffee table and I pick it up now and then to re-read some of the chapters.

BabyEinstein1

Stays true to the title. Tyson does a great job of making complicated theories and physics understandable to the layman, all while keeping it interesting. Truly gives you a brief lecture of dark matter, dark energy, and your place in the universe(among a few others) while keeping you entertained. Loved it and can’t wait for the next book!

Cydiegurl

People in a hurry. If I were to read my first book on this subject, this would be the perfect primer. The author gives relatable analogies for the complex workings of the universe(s). If this was my first book it would leave me with wanting to to know more. If that was the author intent which I believe it was, then mission accomplished.

BudCoop00

Very Insightful and well written. I came from a background in technology but without the formal technology background. I've always been interested in physics and space and how did the universe all begin. Finally I can get so many details and explanations that I've never had and it filled in a lot of gaps. Probably the most insightful book I have ever read. JC

Corleone23

Journey to the stars. Neil embodies and represents the true scientist. His writing takes you on a quick, yet extravagant and beautiful journey through the vast Universe. From the smallest, to the vastly gigantic and dangerous phenomena that have transform and created what we see before us, today. Neil is the man. I was hooked!

MasterSeefee

Absolutely Amazing. Incredibly educational but can also be crammed into a weekend getaway.

Irony Rob

Interesting, but not a holistic book.. Each of the several chapters was a standalone essay. Together, the sum was less than the total of the individual parts. Think of it more as a collection of essays, some of which are very interesting, and a few of which are loaded with interesting pieces of information. But the universe hangs together, so why can't the parts of the book together? Each of the chapters was moving away from the others at the speed of light...

Nolan Ch

Life changing. Get ready to change your view on the world, or better yet, the universe.

Gtrebel1022

Good Read. Found Myself Surprisingly More & More Interested As I Read On.

Babzilla

Different Titles, Similarly Written. I personally don’t write reviews, however I finished “For People in a Hurry” and decided to buy a 2nd book. This one titled Death by Black Hole. I begin by reading the sample which was intriguing so I purchased the book. It was only then that my memory (which is fairly good based on what I see) realizes that the words I begin reading in Chapter 2 seem oddly familiar. I then leave the book to return to “People in a Hurry” only to be confused by both books having the same chapter name and practically word for word the same dialect in each chapter. Did they actually just copy and paste one chapter into another and call it “a new book”? Why would anyone want to pay for another book only to re-read the same words from the previous purchase? Quite a low level of unprofessionalism to make money by printing a publication based on the same dialogue.

Diane-12345

Astrophysics for people in a hurry. Great read. Really simplifies many aspects of space and time that seem unmanageable.

Zaptrax

Some interesting parts but a lot of fluff. The first 1/3 is interesting but the last 2/3rds are fluff. I prefer Carlo Rovelli’s books.

Jaime Nunez

Exceptional book for any curious mind. This book is a great book for the curious people that wonder about the meaning for our place in the cosmic scale. The chapters take you on a journey in which the narrative captures your curiosity but using very understandable phrases that are easy to follow for all readers, regardless of their scientific background.

King Beagle

Disappointing. Spent too much telling the reader about his political beliefs. Very disappointing.

L.T.E.

Dr. Tyson has a wonderful way of looking at the universe. I enjoy the way Dr. Tyson frames the world and the universe. It is a very entertaining read and true to it’s title was a great read for a person who is usually in a hurry and doesn’t have time to read a whole book in one sitting. 10/10 would read again!

Fsmiles

Great science no need to bash religion. Great explanations on how advances in equipment help us understand universe. He bashes religion while trying to make pure science into a new religion with his own code of ethics at end of book. Science and religion can be two great tools. No need for conflict... Read lonely man of faith to see how that works out,

Sabbanco1

Simple yet invaluable. Easy to read and understand.

Usingfromjersey

You can really learn astrophysics in a hurry!. Great book

MW1920382

Fantastic!. A great book for thinkers!

Yes!! Most amazing game ever!

The first book I have ever thrown in the garbage.. His disdain for people who believe in a god is palpable throughout every chapter. Not even an original work, just a rehash of other's theories, peppered with his own self congratulatory prose.

Tytfftyfty

Da da da daaa!. So much about space but it can teach you about space!

Definately not leon

It was amazing. I absolutely loved this book. Especially the ending 10/10 would recommend if you love the cosmos

Pocket Poker

Amazing. This complex yet easy to read book is just what I needed, on my 10 hour flight home. I can say with certainty that the cosmic perspective is now upon me.

Kwsurf

Great read. Great read. I could have done without the final chapter that tried to answer the "what does it all mean" question, which I thought was drivel and sort of ruined it for me. I should have stopped reading one chapter early!

Bengalredlegs

Interesting good to cover a lot of space!. Great place to start to learn something about space. Then pick a topic and divert from there!

Good starter book. I’d sooner direct you to Stephen Hawking’s “A Brief History of Time” or Carlo Rovelli’s “Seven Brief Lessons on Physics”.

Dylanclelland

Amazing. Great book for learning!!

Jealouswizard253

Great introduction to what is Astrophysics. The book is no more than an overview of the history of how great astrophysicists helped us understand the cosmos alongside explaining what their research was about in simple terms. It was great for me.
