In an enthralling new historical novel from national bestselling author Kate Quinn, two women—a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947—are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption.
1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She's also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlie's parents banish her to Europe to have her "little problem" taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister.
1915. A year into the Great War, Eve Gardiner burns to join the fight against the Germans and unexpectedly gets her chance when she's recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, she's trained by the mesmerizing Lili, the "Queen of Spies", who manages a vast network of secret agents right under the enemy's nose.
Thirty years later, haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network, Eve spends her days drunk and secluded in her crumbling London house. Until a young American barges in uttering a name Eve hasn't heard in decades, and launches them both on a mission to find the truth...no matter where it leads.
“Both funny and heartbreaking, this epic journey of two courageous women is an unforgettable tale of little-known wartime glory and sacrifice. Quinn knocks it out of the park with this spectacular book!”—Stephanie Dray, New York Times bestselling author of America's First Daughter

A Fabulous Tale. This is a layered suspenseful work of historical fiction that is impossible to put down. Somehow, the moving love story entertwined adds and not detracts. And throughout all the love of France is evident.
Excellent book!. I loved this book!! It was such an amazing story. The author was very detailed as well. Amazing and heartfelt story. I couldn’t put it down!
Exceptional. In the era of the introduction of many WWll stories, this one stands at the top of the list. The author deftly interweaves facts and historical tidbits together with her story to make it virtually a history novel. A book you won't want to put down and will rue the day you finish it. Enjoy!
What a story!. Loved every minute of this book! Great historical fiction read with captivating characters!
Great read!. Loved this book! It was fast paced and I didn’t want to put it down.
The best book I have read in a long time!. Wow! From the very beginning, this book is a page turner! I loved the parallel story lines and I truly cared what happened to Charlie and Eve. I highly recommend this book! I rarely give five star ratings but this book deserved it!
Must read. I highly recommend this book- will miss it! Learned quite a bit about the women spy network during the Great War- an incredible journey!
Outstanding. Captivating, informative and excellent perspective!
The Alice Network is fabulous!. I loved this book! I have told so many about it. The Alice Network may be one of those rare books that I do read again.
I want to read it OVER sand OVER again!. I could have never imagined how good this book was going to be. I honestly picked it not knowing what it was truly about but I saw it was a book club pick so I tried it. And I’m glad I did! I love this time era and I also love reading about the holocaust and the nazis and ww1. It was a thrilling storyline, one I could relate to in ways, it was heartbreaking and hilarious (I found myself laughing out loud) and surprising all in one. I would recommend it to certain people and not others due to the vulgar language and the very detailed sexual encounters. That would have been my only complaint because this is a book EVERYONE should be able to read.
Excellent. Loved this book! Definitely want to learn more about these brave women. Highly recommend.
I would give this book 10 stars if I could amazing read. This book was phenomenal! Would highly recommend!
Must read!. Marvelous! Beautiful story.
..and I’m not a big fan of modern fiction!. I stick with mostly the classics….Brontë sisters, Austen, Lousia May Alcott, you get it. I truly did NOT want this book to end. The author spins a captivating tale right from the beginning, and melds the two timelines together seamlessly. I’m about to start another book by this same author!
Never wanted it to end. I will always remember this book.
Les Fleurs du Mal. I loved the mixing of fictional and historical characters in this book, and the evolution of Charlie St Clair from confused spoiled little rich girl to emotional maturity through her harrowing experiences chasing evil and horror across Europe.
Extraordinary. This book is definitely a must read!!!
Eve and Charlie. Great WW2 story of strong women who cut to the chase.
Couldn’t put down. I loved every minute of reading this book. From the historical aspect to the strong female leads to the adventure. Everything I love in a book!
Could have been written better. The basic story of this book is interesting. But I found that all of the cliche’s in the book were annoying. And if she mentioned the Luger or Lagonda one more time.......Where was the editor? I read a lot of books and maybe that is why I thought that it was not that great. It has lots of potential to be better if it could be written differently. I finished it ONLY because my book club is reading it.
Excellent historical fiction. This really had it all! So good, I was sad when it ended
Excellent read!. Loved every detail about this book. Highly recommend!
Amazing. What a great story of historical fiction. I really enjoyed this from start to finish
Very fun read. I really enjoyed the book, caracteres and the story
The Alice Network. Wonderful story the ending is so touching and unexpected.
The Alice Network. From beginning to end…Fabulous!!!!
Who’s revenge. Riveting. Slow to start but then couldn’t put it down. Eve suffered so much .... a plight she shouldn’t have ... Good read
COMPELLING READ! By Cincy Kid 68!. Haven’t read a book so intense and heart-wrenching yet also so heartwarming- as what Ms. Quinn has very eloquently written. This is beyond (5) STARS- I will definitely be reading more of her work. These (3) women show why the female gender is the stronger- us men are “wimps ” in comparison! JB
Great read!. Amazing read! Truly kept me enthralled and extra credit that it’s based on historical persons.
The Alice Network. Great story. Compelling read. Characters are developed beautifully. The juxtaposition between the two female characters was fascinating showing how far woman’s options have come. The material provided at the end of the book adds to the story by sorting out fictional from factual people in the book. Learned a lot about history while reading a novel.
Fantastic. Good luck putting this one down! It’s got a bit of everything you want in a novel on top of a very unique compelling story
Enthralling and Thoughtful Storytelling. Quinn does well introducing and developing key characters. The further I read, the more involved I felt in both the individual and collective journey. I truly enjoyed how Quinn interwove history in this wartime spy novel.
Loved it. Long, tedious at points, but a very enthralling story.
The Alice Network. Fascinating tale bringing real heroism to light. A page-turner I could not put down. This talented story crafter interweaves the intrigue and suspense of a WWI spy with post WWII upheaval through the life of Charlie, a young girl whose lost cousin in France sends 3 unlikely friends on a journey that embraces adventure, then danger as she finds her inner voice and strength. It fills in the fictional backdrop to the real historical figure of the least known but most effective spy of WWI. A MUST READ.
Excellent historical novel. Gripping and engaging from first page to last.
Amazing!. A book you’ll never forget!
Love It!. aaaahhh I love this book so much i’ve read it way too many times honestly. The two stories that play simultaneously on each other really makes this book sparkle. The historical nature mixed with romance and mystery really does it for me.
Terrific story!. Fascinating tale. I gave it four stars only because the writing wasn’t as good as the story. That said, I enjoyed it very much.
Page 48. It’s been about two weeks since I started this book. I’m on,y on page 48. It is so incredibly boring. I wish we could request refunds.
Kate Quinn’s skills in making the transitions from factual inclusions told in a fictional character’. A dual-perspective story blends two tales: the first of Charlie who, in 1947 is pregnant, unmarried, and while in Europe to remedy that situation at her parents’ behest, decides to discover just what happened to a beloved cousin who disappeared in Nazi-Occupied France and the tale of Eve, joining the fight against the Germans as a trained operative in a female-heavy spy network, The Alice Network, until treachery brought its downfall. Fascinating reading as Quinn gives us Charlie’s story: the death of her brother brought the whole family low: and reignited her questions about her cousin Rose and just how (or why) she disappeared in German-occupied France during the second world war. Deciding to find answers to her questions despite her parents’ plans for her trek to Europe unlocks a series of twists, turns and strange parallels between the young student and the now middle-aged former spy Eve. A series of betrayals and surprises brought the unlikely Eve to the place she is now. Nearly a recluse, bitter and disillusioned, she also has questions about the end of the Alice network, and perhaps some of those answers and her own experience will help Charlie solve the mystery of Rose’s disappearance. With her only regular human contact being her ‘man of all things’ Finn, the three set out to find answers and uncover secrets long buried. Charlie’s story is told in first person, Eve’s in third: the strange correlations that keep popping up between the two in terms of life experience and losses. With one of Charlie’s only clues being a man named René and a restaurant become the impetus for Eve’s teaming up with Charlie to find answers. Oh the twists, turns and bits of information and history dropped throughout this book are wonderful: some heartbreaking, others using humor, all highlighted by the sense of purpose and determination displayed by Eve, her compatriots and others working to resist the threats. Spy stories are obsession worthy – they usually have everything: drama, intrigue, danger and enemies: hard to resist that combination. But Quinn did one more thing here: she brought us characters that are flawed yet wholly human, determined to finally get answers, some long overdue: while billed as a search for Charlie’s cousin, what emerges even more strongly is the rediscovered courage, pride and purpose for both Charlie and Eve as they unravel the knots to get to answers, settle questions and tell stories of courage, danger and betrayals of the past. Perfect for readers who want a perspective from history that is not well-known, Kate Quinn’s skills in making the transitions from factual inclusions told in a fictional character’s voice are unparalleled: each informing the other as the tension, emotion and information are revealed. I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via Edelweiss for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
I couldn’t put it down. This is a compelling tale of great personal sacrifice in the face of a terrible enemy- one that the women in the Alice Network were compelled to fight. The consequences were swift or delayed, but all of them paid a great price to free France in two world wars.
But it NOW!. Such a good book. Suspense, romance, & intriguing!! I don’t generally read historical fiction but this has been an eye opener! A MUST READ!!!
The Alice Network. Between the tough language, gratuitous violence and sexuality, I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I thought I would. Definitely dark and not much redemption even until the end. I love this genre and time period but just could have done without so much of it. Too much soul-selling.
The Alice Network. It’s a real page turner!
Great read. Enjoyed the mixture of facts and fiction. Well written!
TUNNEL-RAT 79. GUESSS what I will have to add 🇵🇭✝️🇺🇸=🇵🇷
Very engaging. Story is well told. Reader is engaged in the lives of these two women. Powerful story of espionage, struggle, and relationships. A great read!
Fantastic historical fiction. This is a quick, easy read. Full of historical data and mixed with fiction to combine two stories. Extremely riveting, entertaining, and hard to put down. The author does these women (both real and fictional) credit with this story. Highly recommended if you have any love for patriotism for our shared battles in both WW1 and WW2.
Blew my mind!. Really well written account of early spy networks in France during WW1, and then related to similar WW2 activities. Great character depth, enjoyable read, couldn’t put it down.
Interesting but with a lackluster ending. Loved the historical details and setting and the way the author weaved three different stories and time periods into the novel. Didn’t care too much for the epilogue; should’ve ending with the christening ceremony instead of so many years later.

Incredible. Read this book in a day, I just couldn’t put it down. Loved the plot and the writing style.
The Alice Network. Loved this book....a mix of fiction and glimpses of non-fiction to tell a story of real wars and real spy networks. The focus on the female role in this little known (or appreciated) time in history is refreshing and emphasizes the importance and power of the female spy network....highly recommended
Great Read. Quick pace and excellent plot. I couldn’t put it down
The Alice Network. Excellent read. Had a hard time putting down.

Captivating. Excellent read. I was looking for a follow up book to these two great books: The Nightingale and The Light we cannot See. This was it.
Awesomel. A+++++
Perfect historical. Wonderful story; I couldn’t put it down.
The Alice Network. Completely captivated by this book. Couldn’t put it down. Months later I still find myself thinking of it. Fantastic!
One of the most beautiful books I have ever read!. I was sucked in within the first few pages. This book made me laugh and cry...I couldn’t put it down. A must read!!!
Wonderful. Five stars. What a great book, had me from the beginning! Love it! If you are looking for an excellent read, look no further!
Great story, beautifully written. The plot will have you hooked and the characters are brilliant. The use of real historical facts and personas is cleverly done.
Epic. The journey reading this story has been captivating, intriguing with all the horrors of espionage. Brave women brought together by chance.
