What does everyone in the modern world need to know?

Renowned psychologist Jordan B. Peterson's answer to this most difficult of questions uniquely combines the hard-won truths of ancient tradition with the stunning revelations of cutting-edge scientific research.

Humorous, surprising and informative, Dr. Peterson tells us why skateboarding boys and girls must be left alone, what terrible fate awaits those who criticize too easily, and why you should always pet a cat when you meet one on the street.

What does the nervous system of the lowly lobster have to tell us about standing up straight (with our shoulders back) and about success in life? Why did ancient Egyptians worship the capacity to pay careful attention as the highest of gods? What dreadful paths do people tread when they become resentful, arrogant and vengeful?

Dr. Peterson journeys broadly, discussing discipline, freedom, adventure and responsibility, distilling the world's wisdom into 12 practical and profound rules for life. 12 Rules for Life shatters the modern commonplaces of science, faith and human nature, while transforming and ennobling the mind and spirit of its readers.

Some good ideas, mostly fluff. Was okay. Expected more.

Bgwhirlwind09

Amazing, Factual, and Entertaining. Just read it. And read it again.

Powerful.. This one here got me ready to except the world as it is and be willing to move forward into its hardships. Thank you.

Fascinating!. I love the insights! It’s content is new compared to all other reads I’ve had, so it takes some effort to fully absorb it but totally worth it. Thank you J !

Truth. I love this book. It beautifully embodies the message it is trying to convey. It’s existence proves the truth it seeks to uncover and the change it encourages readers to make for the betterment of their own lives.

MrProteinshake

Excellent book. When I first saw this book being mentioned in social media, I was quite skeptical it would be any good. I read the book and I can confirm, this is an excellent book, it talks from things on goal setting - to - raising your children - to - how to handle a negotiation - to - how to have a happy marriage. It is truly an excellent read if you are trying to improve the person you are. But reading the book is 1% of the job, 99% belong in the “treat yourself as if you were someone you were responsible for taking care of”.

Merced96

12 Rules for Life. Lots of great thought provoking ways to navigate important aspects of your life, and how to help others in your life do the same for theirs’.

Please. If I had to read one (1) more time about how many “views” and “upvotes” and YouTube “views” you have acquired, I’m going to go feral.

Aa. Love everything about it

Thoughtprovoking and Truth-Revealing. This is a thoughtprovoking and truth-revealing read. Dr. Peterson is able to formulate thoughts in a manner that makes them understandable and digestable, while not letting you off easy either. Some of the things talked about are those things you already know, consciously or subcosciously, and finally are able to read them and make sense of them, as he himself acknowledges at the end: “I hope [this book] revealed things you knew that you did not know you knew.” I had multiple occations reading 12 Rules For Life where I had to laugh to myself at the brilliance of Peterson’s ability to communicate thougthts and concepts I had previously tried to make sense of myself, and now finally read them, black on white, as clear as day. This book introduced me to new things as well. One of those is the Russian novelist and thinker Dostoevsky, as well as others, who Peterson discusses at some length, and with profound admiration. I will pick up my first Dostoevsky because of Peterson and this very book. Thank You for encouraging me to seek truth, to not lie, to stand strongly and take responsibilty for my life. Thank You also for inspiring me to read more.

Trabecular

Pedantic meanderings of a narcissist. Babble, babble, babble…look how smart I think I am…babble, babble, babble

Evregreen

Good read. It's helping me get started on actually taking stock of what's going on with me and working towards being better.

Dashichz

Keep this for your collections. I know I am keeping this for as long as possible. As a father I look for guidance to help with my children’s development. This brings to light what to focus on.

Darmendarizniko

Must Read. I learned valuable lessons upon reading this book that definitely changed the way I live my life today. I recommend this book by Dr. Jordan Peterson to anyone who strives to turn chaos into order in their own lives.

CSDiablo

Don’t trust the reviews. We choose this book for our book club. It is a difficult read. Lot of rambling before reaching the point of the end of the chapter.

InfosecAustin

Great storyteller, speaker, and thinker!. This book was an amazing opportunity to look into the mind and work of Dr. Peterson who has been consulted by many organizations worldwide, as well as a profound clinical psychologist from what I’ve seen/been told. This book helps the reader to use ancient stories told, and shifts your perspective on those stories to point out the moral or the physiological impacts that may have been embed in the media and otherwise overlooked.

455fgjj

Say what?!?. This book rambles on and on with no cohesive thought. I could not make it past 2nd chapter. So disappointed

Sda2208

Not good. Don’t waste your time with this book. To overly verbose

Big_T27

Good Rules to Live By. I love the 12 rules and I think Peterson offers sound advice that is well explained in the book. Some of the explanations and get a little wordy so you really need to tune in to get the most from this book. That being said this book is very thought provoking and I would recommend it to anyone philosophically or self-improvement inclined. The book is overall well written and heavily cited to support the rules Peterson puts forth.

Darth Domz

Really great!. My life has been kind of falling apart with COVID going around so I decided to pick up this book to get some guidance. I’ve been applying the rules as I read and I feel in control again! If anything, get the audiobook for free on audible and listen to the man talk. His voice is something special! 😂

Andachel

Very insightful. I completely loved this book helped me throughout tough times

Jmesa95

Incredible Book!. An incredible book that can be applied no matter who you are and where you are. Dr. Peterson is blunt and to the point; he doesn’t beat around the bush. This book broke down many toxic ideologies I had and helped me establish better ones. A must read if you’re open and willing to grow.

Elt223

Thank you Dr Peterson. Life Changing no matter who you are.

Scodean12

Very well written.. Great read!!

Perspective Changing. Amazing book. Truly changed my perspective on life and got me out of some not-so-good habits.

Shortielee

Brilliant. Great rules to live by. Brilliant author!

FrankTheTankster

Truly enlightening.. I have not read many self help books but so far this one has truly resonated with me. It has changed my state of mind and how I move through my life. I do not agree with everything Jordan Peterson says but there is no doubting his knowledge and expertise in psychology and philosophy. Thank you for putting so much effort into this book.

RaiderRube

Life!. I thought it was very and DEEP!

Grateful Tim

Wow. Amazing stuff. He packs so much into each line, paragraph and chapter.

Archilny

Good read. Jordan Peterson is a conservative intellectual- his voice and perspective must be heard. Not a conservative myself- I found the book interesting. The book is essentially advice for life to young people; something much deeper than what your High School teacher told you but with a conservative twist. Of course, as a conservative he seeks to establish rules and structures for people to follow- that makes sense from the conservative point of view. Some of his ideas seem little outdated/strange to me- chaos being feminine and order and culture masculine.

Snieves787

Steven J Nieves. This book has changed my entire perspective on life and has helped me through a truly difficult time. I would like to thank Dr Peterson for his words of wisdom.

AutoDidact1

An Original Thinker. A masterpiece from someone who sees so much through a very different lens.

Ty-san

Highly recommend!. Well put together. Concise. Informative.

Macewhatitdo

A Familiar Face. There aren’t even enough words to express the beneficial factors this book illustrates. I will be reading this book to the day i die for it gives no excuses when i fall back on negative outlooks, their is always a way out and for better reason. It takes a lot to know this knowledge and not be better, for not being better would insight a neglect of consciousness. Reading this a second time will only solidify and expand the understanding of its material. The thrill of its revealing ability to concepts of common relatability is unmatched. I will be chewing on this for a very long time.

NateRam17

Alright. There were a lot of religious references, which I do not care for, otherwise, this book was hard for me, but I enjoyed the struggle with it.

Vmos1

Excellent book. Very well written. Love the main message of the book: fixing oneself first rather than blaming everyone else!

Vernon21

Great Insight. Teaching of a perspective that is very helpful.

Trey.codes

Perfect book for self reflection.. This book was a truly amazing read. 12 simple, yet very profound rules for understanding how to better one’s self. I highly recommend.

Wow. I strongly Recommend this book, specially for people who need some light in their lives. It’s unbelievable how much wisdom in this book.

Ruturaj4

Thanks dr peterson. Excellent book. This improved my life!

Inspirational not motivational… what do you seek?. This book is not for everyone. Many who are looking for a motivational no nonsense self-help book would do better reading “Unf*#+k Yourself.” It’s also very good, much shorter, and motivates you to action if you’re stuck in a rut. This book is far better however in my opinion. Those who give one or two stars find Peterson rambling and only touching on the point at the end of the chapter. This is of course true. However, that is why I find it among the best, if not the best, self-help book currently available. 12 Rules of Life is not a motivational book. It is inspirational. Each chapter is not designed to explain the “rule” he posits in each chapter. Instead he talks around his thesis and lets you reach the conclusion on its own. It is done well, thematically, and with no shortage of insight. You will not relate to everything he says, but you will often find enough relatable to find a personal resonance to the message. Motivational self-help books are effective because you believe the author. Inspirational self-help books are effective because you believe yourself once you make the essential connection to the theme. This distinction cannot be understated. If you are one that tends to fall back into self-destructive habits, even after making massive successful changes to your life short-term - this book may be worth the read.

Saint_boiii

2022.. Great book, learned a lot about my OWN life that I didn’t know was In the “fog”

Ur mom 657

Inspirational. I seldom write reviews, only entirely positive or entirely negative. If I never read this book I wouldn’t even have begun to thought about what they could mean for the rest of my life. Many people will receive this book as a gift over the course of my life.

Jair Eugenio

Wow. I'm at a loss of words to describe the awesomeness of this book. Extremely deep and complicated ideas throughout yet Jordan Peterson (the author) explains them in a graceful and simple manner. Not a book for the faint of heart or those inflexible to change. Thank you Jordan for sharing your reflections and rules through your book the world is closer to Heaven thanks to it.

Coach Hobbs

Deep and worth the effort. Dr. Peterson pours out a lifetime of thinking into a book that will be challenging for most to read, but worth the effort. Bravo, Jordan.

Jeremy Gerritsen

Truly a framework to live by. Peterson has written a book that can serve as a guidebook to supplement any other “life advice” that would come from someone older and close to me. I consider Peterson a great modern day philosopher and writer. I highly recommend this to anyone!

Marsviewpoint

Read it. It’s worth the time and effort. So darn interesting. At times it was a little heady for this mere mortal, but push on because it all becomes clear by the time the chapter is done: The author is amazingly honest and he offers such good advice. He doesn’t try to please everyone; he speaks his truth with passion gleamed from hard experience. No matter if you agree or disagree with him, his points of view, and the instructions for a better more meaningful life, can’t/shouldn’t be ignored. Read it.

Alexdecline_

Excellent. I don’t often enjoy self help books, but this one was excellent, I really enjoyed reading it. I really feel as though reading this book, has impacted my life.

AlTorbe

Absolutely Amazing!!!. Jordan Peterson has done for psychology what Albert Einstein wished he could have done for physics.

KomodoVan

Thoughtful and important!. This is a brilliant book of ideas and guidance. It will make you think, and it will help you to understand. Self-awareness is a wonderful thing - perhaps for some, a little scary, too. Dr. Peterson's explanations are accessible and well written. You will see that this man cares about the human spirit and the human condition.

Adrian3267

Incredible. Helped change my life and the life of those I’ve shared it with. Thank you deeply.

🙉+👃=🔥

Interesting read. Not as tough to read as some lead you to believe. Great book with lots of wisdom

Realzero0

Awfully verbose and deceiving. I watch JP’s debate with Cathy Newman. I was convinced JP has a profound mind. And it led me to this book, nothing but a scam. I stopped at chapter 3. The chapter 2 spent 2 pages introducing an intriguing phenomenon. After that he spent the rest 20 pages discussing freaking bible. The book is a religious talk disguised in a self-helping format.

12 Rules for Life - Dr. Jordan Peterson. Great book!

Fightforyou.

sharpen your tools. Opens your eyes and gives order and structure in your life. I reccommend reading this book several times over a long period. There are many things he speaks of for you to experience and undestand. It took me time to grasp so many things. Ive been learning to accept myseld and take care of myself more depsite my past and present. This book teaches you how to sharpen your tools and face any inner and outerdemon. It doesnt matter what you have been through, you can help yourself if you are willing to do the work.

ISeeUndeadPeople

Brilliant!. A lot of gold nuggets are in all the stories he tells that circle back to the main Rule. Brilliant book.

Djdk777

Thank you. Very well written and widely sourced. Loved the distilled wisdom of decades as a therapist, parent and academic. Peterson is simultaneously compassionate and challenging; both gentle like Socrates and blunt like John Calvin; authentically humble and academically informed. His deep respect for the spiritual treasures of the Bible bring out the value in a resource many have spurned or thought irrelevant, though I wished for more reliance on the atoning grace of Jesus. At times the book feels like trying to wrap arms around the world (biting off more than can be chewed), which may be on par for a psychology prof turned philosopher. But a seminal epic nevertheless. The parenting chapter alone was worth the price to this middle aged father of three. Thank you!

Jmillville

Profoundly inspirational. I have never, in my life, read a book so enlightening and inspirational as this book. Jordan Peterson, in my non-professional opinion, is truly one the greatest philosophers of our day. I his words spread and are never forgotten

Franchement!

Redundant. Not worth the hype... but then again, 50 Shades of Grey also happened.

Moxiegrrl

Extremely Well Written, Helpful and Meaningful! An Absolute Treasure!. I am extremely grateful to Dr. Peterson for writing this book, to help guide and provide a framework those in need of it. This book, with is helpful advise on getting oneself “unstuck” from a crippling mindset, is a treasure to read and own - I look forward to using it as a guide to help me move forward in my life. A worthwhile book to own, that holds a treasured spot on my bookshelf and in me. I’m looking forward to Dr. Peterson’s next book. And I am not surprised at how well this book is doing, nor am I surprised at how successfully he has sold out his book tour. I hope Dr. Peterson keeps up the momentum of helping others help themselves! Thank you Dr. Peterson!

Lisamiga

12 Rules for Life. Great and insightful read. Well done!

Dk1268

Outstanding. This book is the single most authoritative fusion of ancient wisdom and contemporary social challenges we face today. This masterpiece synthesizes individual and collective interests in one cohesive work. A must read.

Irockman1

Invaluable. Some of the rules in this book may be basic virtues we already sort of know (such as standing up straight and telling the truth) but the book's value lies in its explanations as to why these things are valuable. If you lack the fundamental understanding behind certain virtues, it becomes very easy to slip up. My life has absolutely improved since reading this book. I'm still nowhere near perfect, as I still sometimes still fall victim to my own laziness and malevolence, but at a less frequent rate than before. I think almost anyone will be able to find some value in this book.

Apple dad

Worth while read. I would give every person entering adulthood this book. The ideas are not new, but newly explained. Puts forth his ideas in an honest and relatable way.

MikeDAZ

Wonderful read!. My sadness is that I didn’t get this book when I was twenty. I can’t imagine a better book to read as one enters adulthood.

Pohebo

Facts and feeling. This is true of human experience. This is a masterpiece. You will gain something from this I promise you.

Life Changing Book. This will go down as one of the greatest books of my lifetime.

L ete

Wow!. Jordan Peterson changed my life for the better without a doubt with this book if you are debating on buying stop the insanity and pay the money!!!

JTWalls

Don’t believe the MSM, See for yourself. Informative and unassuming. Nothing the msm makes it or JBP out to be. A classic example of don’t judge a book by its cover or, what someone else tells you about it. See for yourself.

J Montell

Just Great. Help and inspiration oozes from this book. Thank you Dr Peterson

From Laventille With Love

Amazing!. I find it so interesting that I discovered Peterson and his work just when I began to apply some of the very things he presents in this book. This was truly a blessing that has already impacted my life profoundly. I managed to complete this in less than a week and almost cried when it ended. (I actually kinda did, tbh). Will be reading again with a few of my friends. I appreciate your sacrifice, Dr. Peterson!

Ndhxizbs

Touching, Relatable and Useful.. Fantastic! I loved this book from cover to cover. Mr. Peterson’s vast knowledge of Psychology and Philosophy can assist you in piecing together the broken parts of your life, even ones you didn’t know where broken. Definitely Recommend.

3MAC3MAC

AMAZING READ. Well worth the read.

Flugm

Wow, excellent book!. Thought provoking book that turns a lot of conventional thinking upside down. Doesn’t necessarily mean I agree with everything in here, but I must admit was very engaged reading through the book. Several of his rules revolved around Christian teaching. Peterson’s writings reflect a psychological analysis behind these rules which is incredibly fascinating to read how Christian teachings reflect in society. Expect to have your thinking challenged, and gain a deeper understanding of human interactions!

Tyre_spy2

Very good read. This book helped me clear up a lot of things, not a parent yet but have a few nephews that misbehaves in front of me. Trying another rule...

Jessebrunmeier

Emotional and Insightful. Jordan B. Peterson lays down the law and explains with clarity and tact why these rules can help just about anybody become a healthier, happier human being.

Knarf W

Defies the globalist progressive nutless man view. Dr. Peterson makes the case eloquently and in plain speak of how we as a society have left all those things that made man successfully evolve to be better in every way and have embraced an existence of pussified mediocrity led by women and denial of basic human needs. Jordan lays out a blueprint with set clearly thought out principles with very reasonable and well thought it justification as to why we are failing as a society, who is responsible to fix it (men), and how to change ourselves to bring our world back from the disaster known as progressivism. Disgusting communist progressive liberal democrats are a plague on our world and must be purged either by jailing, ostracizing them to a meager poverty stricken existence, death, destruction or breeding them out of existence then making all their beliefs to include Islam illegal with the immediate penalty of death. What I just said is preposterous! This is what Peterson warns against because he cautions against overcorrecting (my words) too far too the right as dictators have done many times before! Get this book and also Maps of Meaning for intellectual thought provoking information as well! 12 Rules is fantastic and really has changed my life by pulling me back to embrace what I am, what I need to be, and what I had forgotten due to society breaking down our previous societal norms. Great book! Buy one for yourself and one for all your family members, make and female alike!

D2jlking

Every young adult should read. Wow! This is such a great book. The basic truths covered and explained in this book are basic to life. It really is “things you know, but didn’t know you knew”. I would love to have had an opportunity to read this 30 years ago.

Samrat221b

Must read. Loved it

Kuchinga

Very good stuff. Incredibly insightful, well written.

PomonaPastor

Great read and a refreshing book.. I will say that this has been a refreshing book to read. Dr. Peterson is definitely a genius and it shows in this book. An educated man who is always learning and never willing to come to a place that he will not learn anything else is a rarity in academia. This desire for truth instead of ideology shows and is what I really enjoyed even when it crossed my own ideas.

Jennybenny12638

Inspirational. I loved it!

Joshyomy

Excellent. Fantastic book will change your life!

GregS96

Worthwhile, but Wordy. Boy, is it wordy !

Nolnacs

Common sense in an uncommon time.. Western society has succeeded because the value of the individual. The good that any individual does in society manifests in compounding goodness as each individual does their best with their capabilities. These rules are core tenants of how to live a meaningful life in western society. Brilliant communication of the practical nature of being a positive individual.

Meanllama

AMAZING. I love Jordan Peterson’s work!! From his lectures, interviews, articles, and books. He is definitely someone I have great respect for. This book is your blueprint to have an honest and fulfilling life. I can’t wait for his second book to come out. GET THIS BOOK!!

Bmtully

Incredible. Most substantive book I’ve read on the subject... check out the audio version if you can... his tone of voice throughout carries a whole different level of meaning(s)... if you’ve listened, you know what I mean...

Gumbo Jenkins

Stupid. Really?? This guy is an idiot.

Phelpo

In support of inner strength.. I have an inner mantra that I start meditation with. I go through 24 life values. They occasionally are refined as nothing is so ordered that it can’t improve. They relate to levels in time and space within my being: spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical. When my cat Yoda passed, I was devastated. I sat in a chair and closed my eyes. I was empty except for a vision of my values which held me together. It was a complete surprise. Your 12 Rules seem much like my values. I loved your book. It gave me some introspective motion with more inner light. Bravo!

Par 5

Thanks. The book was awake up call for me. I in joyed read about new ideas to follow and practice. Listening, being truthful, trying to understand other peoples problems above my own. But always standing up straight. It taught me that being good doesn’t mean opening your house and let people take thing because they say they need help.

Chrystler200

Influential!. This book gives you an alternative perspective, a plan and hope. I enjoyed this book for many reasons, all of which gave me hope and a new ideology. If you enjoy personal development and growth within yourself and your relationships this book can certainly offer someone new. Jordan said it best it best in his book “listen ( or read in this case ) as if the other person knows something you don’t, because chances are they do know something you don’t “. I hope everyone enjoys this book as much as I did.

Didus Solitarius

How to Embrace Your Inner Pre-Reptilian, Darwinian Tao. As insightful and readable as this book is, both whimsical and well-developed it nevertheless makes two great metaphysical assumptions which are not sufficiently explored: first, that the “yin and yang” philosophy or religion of Taoism is true, second, that it is the fundamental “rule” which governs all of biology and evolution. To his credit the author makes many interesting correlations between that philosophy and various naturalistic observations, but like all extreme naturalism and religion it ends at the fundamental assumptions about reality that it makes which are not explicitly examined on a philosophical level. The result is a kind of naturalistic spiritism, a guru imparting his self-help wisdom, rather than a detached academic survey of research and data, though much data is integrated into the belief system itself. Overall it is an enjoyable and thought-provoking read, but the dictum of Hume lingers ever in the background, never explicitly addressed as a counter-argument, namely that it is logically improper and inconsistent to derive an “ought” from “is.”

JonnyAppleweed

Outstanding book. This is one of the most encouraging and enlightening books I’ve ever read. Johnson offers advise and insight on how to deal with life’s most trivial obstacles. I wish every man and women would read this. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

ChristopherMcTrashApp

Surprisingly approachable. When I initially got this book I expected it to be at least decent. I was very happy to realize it was a well thought out, well organized, and written in a way that makes it approachable. It was a good read and I highly recommend it.

Ohnoitsshan

Mature Enough to Filter. I really enjoyed this book and all of its factually based theories on behavior, however I found myself struggling and page flipping past most of the heavy biblical references mid-way into the book. I am not religious myself but I’m capable of listening and appreciating the words of those who are; it just became a little too saturated for my attention. If you’re open minded and mature enough to filter the biblical aspects then this is a wonderful read.

Ggrannis

Best book ever. This is the only book I immediately re-read after finishing it. It was even better the second time through.

Kire Snewo

Phenomenal. This book is out of the norm because it has such normal common ways of how to be decent.

Jeff68108

Very disappointing. Wish I could get a refund!. This religion driven propaganda from a guy that refuses to understand that social norms change and and just like everything else has to evolve and change with time. He says that any social change to the community is “BAD”. Just another social conservative that is set in a very out of date traditions!

Country fan 12345

Love-Hate. This book is a love-hate kind of read. You will love the parts that apply to you personally and protect your values. You may hate the rest. On the surface, this book is compelling, and easy, in the moment, to agree with the author’s views. Unfortunately as the story unfolds, in trying to accommodate everyone, he ends up creating an argument of why the world should protect people that share his demographic profile and values. While I appreciate his attempts to change my world-view, after spending a few weeks away, I now believe that the author was in a very dark state when he created this book. Yes, darkness must exist to give light meaning, but more darkness doesn’t necessarily create more light. Theorizing out of fear tends to appeal to those who wish to return to (or keep) the status quo, not those who want to change or overcome it. Feel free to read, just be prepared to love and hate it, regardless of your current status.

Alex01986

Amazing. Absolutely great book. I was touched by the author’s sensivity and depth of analysis about important issues related to our daily lives. Very well written and will keep in my library for reference for many many years. Thank you.

XTEBOx

Great teacher. Great psychologist and thinker.

Swagger boost

Read it. For real just read it. The new bible

RagAndBoneMan3

Jungian Noncommittal generic life advice. Peppered with horrifically vague writing and cowardly sexism. Perfect for your one book a lifetime “intellectuals”.

Powboyz

Just rambles on..... Surprised so many people liked this book. Love his talks but this book is terrible.

Darwinshcalacka

.. .

How are there so many 5s....

Other books deserve your time. As a counselor, a lot of the concepts that he teaches in this book are old news. I found myself bored listening to him explain concepts ad nauseam. The amount of Christianity in the book is annoying, as it is used as the basis for many of his concepts. I couldn’t connect to this. I grew resentful as the book went on, wondering why I invested so much time into a lackluster book. I don’t need to be reminded how much suffering is in the world over and over again. Would not recommend.

Lobach Family

Why is this controversial?. Dr. Peterson is a phenomenal communicator with immense credibility from decades as a clinical psychologist. Nothing he says is outrageous or even radical. He essentially empowers the individual with advice and confidence born from common sense. Certain “journalists” who have tried to misrepresent Peterson as some kind of right-wing, callous monster are the real villains of this story. I highly recommend reading, watching, or listening for yourself and making your own judgements.

JBP. Changed my life. Thank you Dr. Peterson!

Review. Such a slow build on the topic.
