“Beautifully written and incredibly funny, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is about the importance of friendship and human connection. I fell in love with Eleanor, an eccentric and regimented loner whose life beautifully unfolds after a chance encounter with a stranger; I think you will fall in love, too!” —Reese Witherspoon

No one’s ever told Eleanor that life should be better than fine.

Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she’s thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy.

But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, the three become the kinds of friends who rescue one another from the lives of isolation they have each been living. And it is Raymond’s big heart that will ultimately help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one.

Soon to be a major motion picture produced by Reese Witherspoon, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is the smart, warm, and uplifting story of an out-of-the-ordinary heroine whose deadpan weirdness and unconscious wit make for an irresistible journey as she realizes. . .

The only way to survive is to open your heart.

Witty and intriguing. Loved the clever narrative of Eleanor. The first part of the book was maybe a bit slow at times but was a real page turner at the end.

Loved this!. ❤️

Frisco Grandma

So Good!. Such a compelling story! I couldn’t put it down. The layers of the story are woven together so well. I was really surprised at the end about her mother’s phone calls. Maybe should have figured it out, but didn’t. What a story! So well told!

MooseheadLove

Beautiful!. What a vocabulary! Love how she turns a phrase and crafts such a touching story!

Brock_zahler

Cute. What a cute book! It’s one of the books that you want to read the bulk of in a few sittings. I found myself failing to get around to it here and there, and then once I was in, I was hooked. I loved the way the author chose to narrate, and the story is very sweet and I think appeals to a range of ages. Would recommend if you like YA/romantic fiction. I can’t wait to see if there’s a movie adaptation!

CaroGttz

I just loved it!. It touched my feelings and it made me want to keep reading! I finished it in like two days and only because I have to work. Such a good book, such a good and unexpected turn of events. By the way, we all need a Raymond in our lives!!!

Trumpet singer

Wonderful book!. A very cleverly written story about a socially awkward woman and her escape from her childhood trauma through the love and friendship of a few good people( and some good therapy). I fell in love with Eleanor Oliphant!

Stephiecanfly

Heartwarming and Unexpected. I didn’t expect this book to get as deep as it did, and I’m so pleased with every aspect of it. There were times of laughter, tears, and deep complexity that made me finish in under two days. This is going to be a book that I go back to for sure, especially when I’m in need of a pick me up!

Richard Bakare

Peeling Back the Layers. I was left absolutely speechless at the end of this one. Gail Honeyman’s novel truly had a bit of everything. I loved the hilarious and cringy social commentary by way of a uniquely voiced narrator. I was lured in deeper watching her self discovery that plays over the chapters. I was emotionally gripped by the journey inwards and towards truth that the Honeyman walks us to with masterful skill. The final twist at the end, whether obvious or not, adds so many more layers of intrigue to the entire book. The anchor of this book is in the journey of belonging. The complexity of navigating social situations and relationships and even just random interactions naturally without conking off as a crazy person. The winds that make this particular journey unique are the breadcrumb trail of clues into our protagonist’s past from page to page. Combined with her justifiable general distrust of people, you have a story of someone you are rooting for but can’t completely trust. I enjoyed this read on par with the likes of Marquez and Cervantes. In that they created compellingly “mad” characters in their major works that challenged what identity, history, and insanity truly were using winding and swirling narratives that boarded on chaos. Gail Honeyman has done the same here. Though pulling that style forward into contemporary times and covering a number of modern issues and dilemmas that make it hard to put down.

Mickymouseie

Hilariously tragic. I loved this book! I loved the vocabulary, the characters, that hope springs eternal!

Photomom8404

Horrifyingly phenomenal. Extremely well written, a few laughs here and there, amazing. A must read

Amyomal

Sad that it ended!. When people told me that I needed to read this book, I wasn’t sure. When I started it, I still wasn’t sure. Then I finished it and was so sad to have it be over. One of the best books I have read.

Mj1stTimeMom

I’ve never read a book quite like this. Definitely a great read. Excellent life lessons and amazing character development over time. I loved it!

Dana326!

Excellent Read. Was a great story. I definitely had a hard time putting it down. Easy read

Belliemay

Very draggy. Interesting twists. Took me a long time to read. But I like stories that move quickly, this does not. Most of the reviews are positive, well deserved. Just not for me. Well rounded characters.

Nikkiseacristgreene

Delightfully surprised. I was surprised by a lot of things with this book and that is a hard thing to accomplish! I wasn’t prepared for the ending or to actually like Elenor or the thought of Elenor and Raymond! ❤️ Delightfully surprised.

Shaanonem

Captivating. Although Eleanor’s circumstances and experiences were unique to her, the theme of loneliness felt singularly universal. I think this is especially true for the millennial generation.

JPCinIdaho

Interesting. A story about trust and healing.

Dest185

I loved it. If you’re a survivor, in any capacity, I urge you to read this! And if you’re lucky enough that you’re not a survivor, you should read it too. Eleanors life is funny, quirky, tragic and riddled with trauma. Following her through healing and self discovery was truly inspiring.

Jankyjane

Odd but so good. This is one of the oddest books I’ve ever read. Despite the many quirks of Eleanor and how socially awkward she is, I couldn’t wait to learn more about her. I couldn’t wait to see how things ended.

Jewel....

Enjoyed this so much!!!. Warm and heartfelt. Absolutely loved this book.

Daisymichelada

Loved it. Wonderfully written. Couldn’t put down!

What a lovely, heartbreaking, funny, poignant story. I will read this again!. So many reminders for the readers to be grateful for the small things in life that we take for granted. I laughed, I cried and I was filled with warmth and hope.

Karen_Lee1

Wonderful read. I loved this book. It was well written and touchingly funny and tragic at the same time. I actually was a bit sad to have finished it since I loved all the main characters so much. This is one to recommend to friends.

Must read.. Fantastic. Could not put it down. What a heart-warming story about loneliness and friendship, as well as self-awareness and care. Eleanor is a truly inspirational under-dog.

Grannie BB

Lives up to the ratings.. Such a unique book, with very unexpected and unpredictable twists and turns. I took a personal liking to the characters and was rooting for them throughout. A new fave!

Lapainter2012

Heartwarming. Eleanor’s character is extremely odd, and not at first appealing. However, seeing her come into her own, and the friendships she forms, it’s so very heartwarming.

Eleanor is Completely Fine. Slow at first (for me) but was captivated by Eleanor and makes me want to make some life changes. Loved it and would recommend!

Alive10

Holy Cow. I loved this book from cover to cover. It ended too soon. I wish we could have known more of Eleanors triumph over tragedy. But nonetheless this was a page turner that I couldn’t put down!

Wakeboarder1996

Everyone should read this !!. It only takes one person to make a change. A simple smile is worth more than you know! Thank you for opening my eyes Eleanor !! Hilarious, sad, suspenseful , love ...this book covered it all for me!

Not as described. The way I perceived this book, I would have thought light hearted... Some bits of this are very hard to read they are so depressing.

Bugsytico

Almost quit glad I didn’t. A really beautifully written book about a very depressing subject….hard at first but keep going

C.G. P

Odd.. but rewarding. I have to be honest, I found myself cringing with second hand embarrassment for the first part of the book. I was close to quitting, it made me feel so uncomfortable. I do NOT understand anyone who finds this funny. It was clear from the get go that something was WRONG. She isn’t just the way she is. The way bits and pieces revealed themselves about her past and her family, that kept me engaged. The second half of the book is a phenomenal and raw look at the rock bottom feeling of declining mental health. As someone who has struggled myself, it was heartbreakingly accurate. The novel unfolded into this beautiful journey of self discovery and recovery. I was pleasantly surprised and deeply moved. I felt the warmth and love grow for Eleanor. She transformed.. and so did my opinion of this book.

Goodcoverage

A great work of personal discovery. The author causes Eleanor to speak with extreme clarity and with proper sentence structure. The character of Eleanor is developed by giving glimpses into her past but not giving away the plot to quickly. She encounters people who surprise her by accepting her just as she is. The therapist does a brilliant work of carefully and carefully guiding Eleanor to health. It is difficult to put down the book once started

Eleanor Oliphant is Just Fine. Eleanor Oliphant was such a good read—so full of humor, humanity at it’s worst and best, and the affect both of those opposites has on an individual! What an awesome novel! I could not stop reading!

Shawnarogers

Quirky and compelling. While the topic and life events of this character are dark and disturbing, the author finds a way to bring hope and light to her life. Eleanor is quirky and yet so likable, with the reasons for her mannerisms slowly revealed. This story is compelling and kept me engaged throughout. It also left me thoughtful about the humanity around us and that everyone has a story and no one should have to travel their journey alone.

Imarealbeast

Loved it!. It was a good read! Eleanor is a delightfully, honest character! She kept me interested and wondering what would be revealed next!

Caithayes

We’re cheering for you Eleanor. Oh, I just loved this book. What a hilarious, sad, and dark book. It had everything and more. I haven’t read a book this good in so long. Thank you for writing it.

Gowestjhj

Most engaging read….. I wasn’t sure what to expect when selecting this book. From page one I was hooked ! Eleanor’s voice is at once quirky and hilarious drawing you into her world. A must read!!

Cat_lover_1121

Excellent. Very smartly written and deeply honest. Explores many critical issues regarding mental health that need to be out in the open. And also dine with a great sense of humor!

LOVED. Really great read. Laughed out loud several times, but there was also a good balance of mystery and seriousness as well. Selfishly, I wish we knew more about Eleanor and Raymond’s future. I’ll definitely read again.

AHAHAHAHAHAHA IN love!!!

Loved this book. One of the best I have read in a while. While you read this book, you grow with Eleanor (despite your pay) and overcome so much. I want more of Eleanor!

Excellent. This book is a page turner. Wondering what she will do or say next. Surprise ending adding to the excitement of the book. Great read!!!

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. I LOVED this book!! Tender, charming, funny, sweet and at the same time somewhat ominous, terribly sad & utterly real...ultimately a story about perhaps the most important thing we can ever have or hope for in this life - true human connection & a realization of the beauty of it all - I am truly grateful for this read...

PierresFamily

Heartwarming!. Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine is the story of a young lady who is trying to overcome her past as an abuse victim, while crafting a semblance of a normal future. er abuse came at the hand s of both her mother and her first boyfriend, so she had no plumbline for a normal life. In spite of her painful history, Eleanor manages to concoct a world in which she fools herself into believeing that she is comfortable and pretty self-sufficient. As she says in Chapter 17, “…Once you realize that you don’t need anyone, you can take care of yourself. That’s the thing: it’s best just to take care of yourself.” She is a misfit who tends to see herself as normal, while others are the misfits. But gradually, she reaches out, step-by-step, into the “normal” world. It is moving to see her going to a department store for the firs time, to a hair salon for the first time and getting involveed with other activities that most of us take for granted. She sets her sights on a mediocre pop music star, while a simple, kind, nerdy coworker sets his sights on her. Some disappointments are inevitable, but will Eleanor eventually be part of a fuilfilling relationship? I was invested emotionally with Eleanor. Some of my favorite Eleanor quotes, that represent her true self at different stages of the story: Two quotes that are evidentiary of her wonderfully biting sense of humor: “The last party I’d been to-apart from that appalling wedding reception-was on Judy Jackson’s thirteenth birthday. It had involved ice skating and milkshakes, and hadn’t ended well. Surely no one was likely to vomit or lose a finger at an elderly invalid’s welcome home celebration?” (Chapter 11) “There is categorially no need for eye contact when the person concerned is wielding sharp implements.” (Spoken while receiving a beauty treatment, in Chapter 12) “Although it’s good to try new things and to keep an open mind, it’s also extremely important to stay true to who you really are. I read that in a magazine at the hairdresser’s.” (Chapter 21) “I had decided, years ago, that if the choice was between that or flying solo, then I’d fly solo. It was safer that way. Grief is the price we pay for love. The price is far too high.: (Chapter 23) “People sometimes say they might die of boredom, that they’re dying for a cup of tea, but for me, dying of loneliness is not hyperbole.” (Chapter 26) “But no one had ever shown me the right way to live a life, and although I’d tried my best over the years, I simply didn’t know how to make things better. I could not solve the puzzle of me.” (Chapter 27) That is insightful writing! I have no complaints about this book, though I would have chosen a different ending. But the ending isn’t “wrong,” and I’m sure that each reader will put his / her imprint on the interpretation of the story. I hope that there is a sequel to this book.

ShellynScott

Deeply touching novel. I started this book, (as it was the months choice for my church book club), with some hesitation, thinking it wasn’t the type of material I would be interested in. So I was surprised to realize the further I got into her story, the more attached I became to Miss. Oliphant and Raymond. I loved her innermost thoughts, judgements and psycho babble chatter. It made me giggle out loud. Then, needing to know what happened to her made it difficult to put the book down. In reality, she is a person that I probably wouldn’t have given much time, thought or attention to. That made me sad..... and forced me rethink how we treat others in passing or in the work place. Kindness, honesty, love, acceptance, sacrifice, service. All characteristics of a good human being. We could all take lessons from Raymond.

Ashace0201

LOVE. Absolutely will not regret reading this book! I loved every minute. Heartbreak, love, strength, friendship everything you need.

Stutterrrrer

Unexpected. Never thought I’d grow to love and hope the best for the strange and eccentric Eleanor Oliphant.

Michellemybelle214

Lovely. So well written and interesting. I highly recommend this book. Especially if you need a break from heavy content but aren’t looking for an easy beach read either. I know I’ll read this again.

Gorgeous girl me

We can all use a friend.. Much like Eleanor I think we all spend a lot of time thinking we are okay on our own. We don’t need anyone else. Then on the flip side, we see people different then us, and think they’re strange. If we open up & get to know people, we find life is better with others around us.

Alexisvictoria09

Loved it. This was such a fun book to read. It catches you off guard by her personality. But the more you read into the book, the more you relate to everyday things she has going on. Easily became a favorite of mine.

Cut wood

A pleasure to read. At first, I wasn’t sure if I would like this book. But it did not take long to get to know and root for Eleanor! Nicely done.

Sra. Best book I’ve read in years.

Dtabbah

A page turner. Couldn’t put the book down. Found myself giggling so many times and my heart fluttering anxiously at other times.

Tralowe

Emotionally brilliant!. I can’t remember the last time I read a book that was so...smart. The heroine’s voice is funny, engaging, and a window into the mind and coping mechanisms of a person who has endured personal tragedy and abuse. A poignant reminder of the necessity of human connection and compassion. Loved every second.

Barbym1224

Didn’t pull me in. This book took me so long to finish. It had such a slow start, then started to get a bit more interesting, but I felt the ending was a bit anticlimactic. I wanted to love it, but it was just okay.

Barbdds

Completely Fantastic. What an expertly crafted book. Revealing little by little what we needed to get to know Eleanor and her quirky survival techniques. We all should learn to be kinder and not judgmental. There is probably good reason for people’s strange behavior

Sydlee_ah

Hated the first 10 pages. Then couldn’t put it down.. You must read this book if you’re desperate for a new kind of story.

Moonemi20

A book about loneliness for lonely people. I loved my journey through this book and it comforted me in dark times. What more can you ask for in a novel?

Skim1000

Great. Great

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. What an extraordinary book and story! The intrigue of Eleanor’s life as a survivor of an unthinkable act when she was a child (no, not sexually abused) and her life as an adult trying to cope is written so eloquently. Her unlikely friendship ( first friend she makes as an adult) with Raymond makes this one of the most bittersweet stories I’ve read in a very long time! Bravo to Gail Honeyman on her debut novel. I hope she writes another one.

Sudiniup

I read Eleanor Oliphant in one day and I loved it.. I read Eleanor Oliphant in one day and I loved it. The author, Gail Honeyman said, “It's a story of the - transformational power - of small acts of kindness.” Gail wrote Eleanor’s life, as a person: "that has been knocked off kilter by an unnamed childhood horror which she can only recall from her sense of , “before” and “after”, and “although she’s had a fairly catastrophic start in life, Eleanor is still the agent of her own life." She didn’t want to write her as a victim, and didn’t want her to be self-pitying either. She tried to leave space in the narrative, so the reader could feel those feelings on her behalf. It’s written in first person and begins with Eleanor’s day to day life and her unfiltered description of herself and everyone she meets. Eleanor is 29, has no friends or social contacts, is eccentric, opinionated, lives in Glasgow, Scotland, works as a finance clerk for a graphic design company, and every weekend consumes two bottles of vodka. She is academically intelligent, loves crossword puzzles, is socially awkward and leads a solitary lifestyle. She does some really, ill-advised things in the early chapters and she's oblivious to the way her shortcomings appear to those around her. She blames any awkwardness on the other person's "underdeveloped social skills.” Her private thoughts are witty, semi-harsh judgements about everything and everyone but sometimes she says these thoughts out loud, and it alienates people. She also has an odd formality in her conversational speech, which pushes most people away. Through out the book, clues gradually emerge to Eleanor's troubled past, and eventually her full childhood story emerges. Eleanor’s unravelling – and redemption – begins when an old man collapses in the street. Eleanor’s partner in the, "transformational power of small acts of kindness," is her co-worker Raymond. After reading about 25 pages of this book, I loved Eleanor, felt protective of her and wanted good things to happen to her.

SRVLVR

Loved it!. Quirky sad and funny all at the same time!

Daniellible

Quirky Eleanor. I love quirky characters. I love surprise stories of redemption. I appreciate the backwards sequence of the backstory that helps the reader understand Eleanor.

Jumsmuj

Lovely. This a funny and special book. Highly recommend it.

Eleanor oliphqnt is completely fine. Brilliant. While the story might be obvious, young woman, traumatized as a child, begins to find hope and love , the storytelling is exquisite. I was angry at Eleanor at times and at times you feel as broken as she was. Brilliant is all I can say. I want more.

Kw4023

Eleanor Oliphant. Absolutely loved it!

Review by Sarah

Eleanor Oliphant. The book was a decent read but I would not suggest it to a friend. It is kind of draggy but was not hard to get through. I was very caught off gaurd with the dark turn that it takes, that was not my favorite since was I was expecting a funny novel. I did laugh a few times and do not considerate it a bad book. This book overall was, ok.

Daynaplease

This book grew on me. I was ok with this book until it ended and now I find myself missing Eleanor and wanting more! I hope this becomes a movie. The main character was a little hard for me to like at first but then I started recognizing some of my behaviors. Her growth was well done.

Whitmben

Lovely. Worth the hype. A lovely tale of self resilience.

Villa144

Strangely Relatable. This book has something for everyone and reminds us how important it is to have close ones to help us through life’s triumphs.

Loved!. Heartwarming, insightful, and funny. One of the most well-developed characters I've read in a long time.

Mslit13

READ THIS BOOK. This book is fabulous. It was more of an impulse buy, and I’m so glad I made the choice. It made me think, it made me laugh, and (most importantly) it made me reflect. Excellent writing and characters. I wish I could give it more stars.

Kirathekid

This book is completely fine. I found Elenor to be very entertaining however the plot, not so much. I wouldn’t recommend.

JadeyBee:)

Completely fine. The book is slow paced. The protagonist is very un-likable. You learn why, but not until you’re halfway through the book. The main themes are abuse and recovery, loneliness and friendship. The book is basic but a decent read.

Really liked this book. Definitely a favorite. Made me laugh at loud in public. I could identify with way too much...

Quirky and Heartwarming. This book is a quick read that is full of quirky humor and emotional upheaval about transformation and growth of an individual woman. All of which is mixed in with a mystery and some surprising twists! Has that peaked your interest? Will not be sorry you opened!

Shaina.peacock

Couldn’t put it down. I absolutely loved this book. Eleanor is unique and yet very relatable in so many ways. The story is beautiful, at times dark, and shows how the gift of friendship can make such a great impact in someone’s world. I couldn’t put this book down!

Doug funnie

Shocking classic. This book is well-written, hilarious, charming, upbeat, sad, and wonderful. There’s no wasted words spent on needless descriptions of scenery and it’s paced perfectly. I got much more than I was expecting out of it, and it serves as a great reminder to all of those serious literary minds out there that a great story is often full of, and unashamed of, humor and its place in everyone’s life. t’s dying to be made into a movie, if done properly.

Cotyy_pink

The book you didn’t know you needed. This book changed my life. I have never related to anything more else in my life. Written in such a beautiful, quirky, and fun way. I read it in 3 days.

Word Lover 70

Eleanor Oliphant. This first time novelist has written a riveting story revealing the life of EO. The storyline contains sad and funny elements carefully intertwined as the novel unfolds. Characters are richly drawn. At times it was easy to envision becoming friends with the characters. They help the plot move along as we see Eleanor grow to be a woman confident of herself but willing to become vulnerable to the life story of others as she is drawn into their lives. This is a truly enjoyable novel. I highly recommend it.
