- About M. Louisa Locke
It is November of 1880, and the future looks promising for Annie and Nate Dawson. Nate's law practice is taking off. Annie has made the transition from pretend clairvoyant to a successful financial consultant, and as a couple, they are looking forward to spending their first Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays together.
For Robert Livingston, the owner San Francisco's newest grand emporium, the holidays are shaping up to be a dismal failure if he can't figure out how to stop whoever is stealing from his department store, the Silver Strike Bazaar. When he hires the Dawsons to investigate, Annie and Nate discover that behind the doors of Livingston's "Palace of Plenty," nothing is quite what it seems.
Pilfered Promises, by USA Today bestselling author, M. Louisa Locke, is the fifth full-length historical mystery in the cozy Victorian San Francisco mystery series featuring Annie and Nate Dawson and their friends and family in the O'Farrell Street boarding house. Locke's shorter works, found in Victorian San Francisco Stories: Vol 1 and 2, and Victorian San Francisco Novellas, feature minor characters from the series.

Pilfered promises. Have read several of this authors stories. Delightful as usual.
Pilfered promises. Very entertaining with a great glimpse of the big fancy stores of that era. Great characters. Thanks, g
Good read. Love the setting and the characters. Fast pleasant read.
Very good mystery. I enjoyed this book, I am originally from CA, born in'39. My mother's people came to CA from NM but were from TX and earlier from GA. I was told they didn't have slaves, but after I had my DNA done by Ancestry I have found 6 or 7 4-8 th cousins of black decent. My mother's cousins were cowboys and who knows. Life is interesting and I wish I could have learned more. People do a lot of funny things in life. Thanks for the good story.
I loved the characters and the story. The characters were well drawn with intriguing quirks. A nice story full of nice people - that happens to include Grand larceny and murder
Pilfered Promises. This series describes in part the condition of women ca. 1880 San Francisco in well plotted mystery. The target audience is women, but a decent sleuth for all.
Review. I found this book to be well written and flow nicely. There are a couple of small typos but the writing was generally quite to my taste. Perhaps I will read more from this author.

Pilfered Victorian San Francisco. What a fascinating and intriguing mystery that was solved in the 1800 ‘s by ordinary people who used common sense. The characters were very real and being authentic made it that much more interesting.
