The Daily Stoic

The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday & Stephen Hanselman Book Summary

From the team that brought you The Obstacle Is the Way and Ego Is the Enemy, a beautiful daily devotional of Stoic meditations—an instant Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestseller.

Why have history's greatest minds—from George Washington to Frederick the Great to Ralph Waldo Emerson, along with today's top performers from Super Bowl-winning football coaches to CEOs and celebrities—embraced the wisdom of the ancient Stoics? Because they realize that the most valuable wisdom is timeless and that philosophy is for living a better life, not a classroom exercise.

The Daily Stoic offers 366 days of Stoic insights and exercises, featuring all-new translations from the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the playwright Seneca, or slave-turned-philosopher Epictetus, as well as lesser-known luminaries like Zeno, Cleanthes, and Musonius Rufus. Every day of the year you'll find one of their pithy, powerful quotations, as well as historical anecdotes, provocative commentary, and a helpful glossary of Greek terms.

By following these teachings over the course of a year (and, indeed, for years to come) you'll find the serenity, self-knowledge, and resilience you need to live well.

This book stuck with me all year and I will continue to reread it over each year.

This book is my bible since 2019…

This book is in my top 10 of all time. Ancient wisdom from the Stoics that rings true and feels modern today. I read it every day as part of my journaling and writing practice. Try it here on iBooks and if you love it, consider picking up a leather bound version by Ryan at his book store, The Painted Porch. That’s why I did, this book is a gem.

I read and reread it every year. Great reminders on daily thoughts and moving 1 degree at a time, you’ll be astonished on how far you have traveled or changed over that time.

A marvelous book about how to live life everyday

Love reading these daily reminders on how to be a stoic. Something I look foreword to each day!

Required reading to start your day.

Excellent insights and enlightening

Great Book !!! I read this every year !!!

Great book! Have enjoyed so much and given to others to enjoy. I will read again next year

Great book to read each day and ponder of the ideas of the Stoic and how it still relates to us today.

Daily philosophical advise for life that I lost interest in. I guess I’m not Stoic.

Despite the author's claim that Stoicism is not the unfeeling philosophy we have come to know it as, that is definitely what I found this collection of philosophical quotes to be. If you are looking to affirm your bootstrap moral code that is built on soulless "shoulds", then this is the book for you. There are definitely some classic gems to be mined from these dauntless thinkers.

So appreciate your daily words clarifying what is / should be how we live our lives. Thank you.

Good stuff, great reading to get you mind right before taking on the day.

This book helped me get through an incredibly tough time. Control what u can control. Pragmatic, Succinct, proving its not what life throws at u, but how you view it, that u can direct. Helps be in control when Your world is out of control. Get it!

I first encountered the Stoics in my Philosophy classes in college. Our professors focused on more current schools of Philosophy, so Stoicism was only glanced upon. For that reason and others I did not really pick it up again until late in 2016. Looking for something calming and distracting from the political turmoil. Slowly working my way through the Stoic philosophers I eventually landed at Ryan Holiday’s detailed analysis and packaging of Stoicism into a bite sized daily package. Stoicism is a lot to try and take on, almost hinting at a monastic sensibility. You need a guide through it so you don’t end up sitting on a rock disavowing the world in some sort of numbing isolation. The Daily Stoic is just the right type of field manual for those interested in Stoic teachings. It is not just like some New Year’s calendar with a clever quote everyday, though it is read ideally consumed in daily readings over the course of a year. Holiday has carefully structured each month into themes that build upon each other. Quotes and passages from the various Stoics are explained and tied to anecdotal examples from modern life. Moreover, the months are grouped into different aspects of our nexus of control. This approach makes Stoicism approachable and useful for anyone. With all of the incoming noise and chaos of the world only growing in scale, relative to the technology that accelerates the entropic reach of distraction; we need a release valve for all of the building pressure. A little meditation and supplement of The Daily Stoic is the perfect remedy.

I’ve been reading this book everyday for years, and I learn something every time I read it. Repetition is imperative for me, so reread these pages in order to absorb the statements and put them into practice. As long as I am alive, I will read this book everyday and work to be a better man.

I have been reading this now about twice through. It’s my go to for a daily philosophical thought. Never gets old.

When I began following in Jan 2019, I was a smoker with other bad health habits who had a poor social life and intense anxiety. Through using the companion journal and reading these texts, I began to see certain themes come up again and again and again. I realized how ashamed I was of my smoking and the way I was treating people and myself. Using this text, Holiday’s other books, some meditation, and a lot of good intention, I quit smoking, started travel nursing, got back in the gym, started running, and started treating people and myself with respect. I’ve been cigarette free for >5-6 months now and I’m very proud of my relationships and the way I treat people. This text is an invaluable resource for young men (especially) who feel that they have no obvious male role models. Many days I read these texts and felt like Marcus was speaking to me from the grave as a father and a brother. Thank you, Ryan. I no longer fear death (or life 😉).

Must read!!!

I’m starting my third calendar year of reading Daily Stoic. It has become a part of my morning routine. it is my steady-drip of self inquiring to help me stay on track of being. Already given a few copies out as gifts.

A close friend suggested The Daily Stoic as a guide for life’s journey as I move into the next half century of my life. It sits on my bedside as a calming resource for daily and weekly spiritual guidance on my own ongoing personal development, my career, communication at home and at work, and family engagements (both the highs and the lows). I love how the boook is designed in sections with supporting ancient philosphies (and the authors’ translations) that align with that section. You can take things in small bites, reflect and then consider how you might apply the teachings. As a lifelong learner, this is a valuable addition to my beloved collection of books!

Learned so many powerful values thanks to this book. Highly recommend it. The daily format makes it easy to read and also a good reminder.

This is a great book that you can reflect on.

Simple, yet effective and practical way to include these every day principles into your life. If you’re a fan of wisdom and/or philosophy, or just trying to be better over all, you’ll love this book.

I literally bought his book last Thursday because Megan Batoon (a Youtuber/dancer/an overall cool person) showed me multiple excerpts from this book by Ryan Holiday and I was inspired to buy the book so I obviously did. This book was genuinely informative and it has taught me honestly more than I ever learned in high school and that's saying a lot. I feel like a Stoic practitioner and I'm not afraid to let the world and whoever comes my way know about all the wisdom and knowledge I've obtained from reading this amazing book.
