Inspired by the incredible true story of one Jewish family separated at the start of World War II, determined to survive—and to reunite—We Were the Lucky Ones is a tribute to the triumph of hope and love against all odds.

“Love in the face of global adversity? It couldn't be more timely.” —Glamour

It is the spring of 1939 and three generations of the Kurc family are doing their best to live normal lives, even as the shadow of war grows closer. The talk around the family Seder table is of new babies and budding romance, not of the increasing hardships threatening Jews in their hometown of Radom, Poland. But soon the horrors overtaking Europe will become inescapable and the Kurcs will be flung to the far corners of the world, each desperately trying to navigate his or her own path to safety.

As one sibling is forced into exile, another attempts to flee the continent, while others struggle to escape certain death, either by working grueling hours on empty stomachs in the factories of the ghetto or by hiding as gentiles in plain sight. Driven by an unwavering will to survive and by the fear that they may never see one another again, the Kurcs must rely on hope, ingenuity, and inner strength to persevere.

An extraordinary, propulsive novel, We Were the Lucky Ones demonstrates how in the face of the twentieth century’s darkest moment, the human spirit can endure and even thrive.

We Were the Lucky Ones. Tear-jerking, wonderful, heart-pounding, couldn’t read the page fast enough, masterpiece. The author of this book laced together one families complicated but beautiful story that tears at your heart strings. I couldn’t read the book fast enough. Thank you for this moving story that the world needed to hear.

Lucky Ones. I knew this would be an intense book based on the topic. I was amazed by the story and pulled into each character's experience on an emotional level. Extremely well written and we need this type of story to be remembered in today's world where there are similar situations of refugees around us.

We Were the Lucky Ones. This is one of the best books I have ever read! It’s impossible to stop reading…the ending is amazing!!!

NoBrainerToMe

We were the lucky ones. Truly brilliant work. Best book I’ve read in a long time and I read about 50 per year, primarily historical fiction. This book is primarily a history of her family during WW2 in Poland and the history around it. The suffering they went through is almost unspeakable. A very emotional ending. Not enough adjectives in my vocabulary to provide the accolades it truly deserves.

Got to read it. Lovely and entertaining

We were the lucky ones.. Absolutely mind numbing. Don't think a person in my family in this generation would have survived what this family had to endure. I cannot get my mind wrapped around the cruelty of the Holocaust.

Amazing!. The best book I've ever read! I haven't been reading for a few years because of a busy schedule and just not being able to get into anything that keeps me wanting more. I didn't watch any television for the last few days and read at every moment I had the chance because I truly could not put this book down!!!

Over age

Frannie. It is a story of family that every person should read about survival. It brought back memories of my grandparents who lived during that war. A truly wonderful book

Lest We Forget. I did not realize this is a true account of the author's family until I had finished the book. Truly incredible story of their determination-and, yes,luck-in surviving the Holocaust. Well worth reading.

Nice story, but a bit formulaic. This books makes for a very nice family history, one made better still by the happy ending. Where it suffers is that it’s more a paean to the family members than it is novel. Initially I tried to keep track of all the characters, but over time it became evident that such was unnecessary as the characters are largely interchangeable. The book focuses on imagined conversations and internal thoughts occurring in each characters mind, which can be distilled to this formula: no matter the difficulty the character is facing, their only thoughts are not about themselves, but just worry and concern for other family members. This is a nice sentiment, and perhaps not surprising when you consider the author is writing this for her family to read, but of course that’s not how people really are. People are multidimensional, with unique personalities and, at least occasionally, have self-centered thoughts. Had the characters been allowed to deviate from this rigid formula the book would have been more interesting as the central characters themselves would have been less homogeneous and more interesting; not just a different telling of the same thoughts voiced by a different character. The book does a nice job of bringing Polish history from that period alive. General historical accounts are often unable to bring out the human element of those who lived their lives during those times. This book did a nice job of mixing the detail of history with the personal stories of a family living through those times. Well done!

Hhat2!

Moving. I couldn’t stop reading this novel! When it ended I wished there was more to read. This story is one of a kind. If you are interested in World War II survival stories this is the book for you. The detail the author includes paints a clear picture of what went on in Europe during that time. I will probably end up reading this again. It was that good!!

Amazing story. Could not put the book down once I started reading. The story of her family history is important to all of us. We all need to learn from the past. Her family’s resilience and courage in their circumstances was amazing. What a wonderful legacy they have left for all their relatives. They truly are ‘The Lucky Ones’ !

Phenomenal book. What a phenomenal book. It draws you in from the first page. It makes you feel like you are a member of the family. You are scared for them. You cry with them. You feel their sorrow and pain. But you also celebrate with them. And have pride in the family members and their strength. Big sigh. I LOVED this book.

Tot1539

Phenomenal. Fantastic

So beautiful. A beautiful story of family, survival and hope. The title gives away the end but the journey is captivating and heartbreaking.

Great book. A must read for anyone interested in the history of WWII

Engrossing and riveting. Absolutely amazing. I loved reading the book - one of the greatest books I’ve ever read. I realized (at the end) that it is based on actual events; I believe the story should be required reading for everyone.

What an enthralling book!. This book was recommended by a friend and I took it with me on a trip and over 5 days devoured it! I kept getting in trouble for reading, when I should have been visiting with friends and their families! Then to read the acknowledgment in the end and hear stories about the real families and all the research and time that went into it was amazing! I have a great uncle named Frank Foley who helped the Jews obtain false visas and passports, and who has also been awarded Righteous Among The Nations, so this book was a wonderful insight into the lives and peril of those who lived through this horrendous time. Thank you for writing this beautiful story of your family and their survival and experiences.

Enhancing life with books

Great read.. Profoundly interesting and stimulating. The author made the characters so human and authentic. It deeply affected my emotional and spiritual life. The best I have read in a long time.

Mmjimenezrn

Very well written. I loved going back and forth with the multiple characters and hearing their stories. I never knew people were sent all the way to Siberia from Poland! The survival stories were really amazing

Nancy Virginia

We Were the Lucky Ones. I have always loved Jewish people. Their traditions, intelligence, love of music, and beautiful things has always impressed me. Strong family and religious ties are traits I associate with Jews. These are the strengths that carried the Krucs thru the horrors they experienced and survived during World War II.

Emotional Read. Hadn't read a book in awhile,,,,,and found it was very well written. The hurt was there for God's people and wondering how this horrific happening even transpired,,,,was very very sad, but so glad I took the time to read.

Persona de la mundo

Everyone needs to read this book. The only was to prevent this type of tragedy in the future is to learn from the past. What humans will do to other humans is unremarkable.

Autumn Lough

Could not put it down!. Absolutely heart-wrenching and awe inspiring all at once, this book is a riveting tribute to the human spirit and the power of family, faith, and resilience. A MUST READ!
