The Whistler by John Grisham
The Whistler by John Grisham Book Summary
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A high-stakes thrill ride through the darkest corners of the Sunshine State, from the author hailed as “the best thriller writer alive” by Ken Follett
We expect our judges to be honest and wise. Their integrity is the bedrock of the entire judicial system. We trust them to ensure fair trials, to protect the rights of all litigants, to punish those who do wrong, and to oversee the flow of justice. But what happens when a judge bends the law or takes a bribe?
Lacy Stoltz is an investigator for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct. It is her job to respond to complaints dealing with judicial misconduct. After nine years with the Board, she knows that most problems are caused by incompetence, not corruption.
But a corruption case eventually crosses her desk. A previously disbarred lawyer is back in business, and he claims to know of a Florida judge who has stolen more money than all other crooked judges combined. And not just crooked judges in Florida. All judges, from all states, and throughout United States history. And now he wants to put a stop to it. His only client is a person who knows the truth and wants to blow the whistle and collect millions under Florida law. When the case is assigned to Lacy, she immediately suspects that this one could be dangerous. Dangerous is one thing. Deadly is something else.
“[A] main character [who’s] a seriously appealing woman . . . a whistle-blower who secretly calls attention to corruption . . . a strong and frightening sense of place . . . [John Grisham’s] on his game.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times
“[John Grisham is] our guide to the byways and backwaters of our legal system, superb in particular at ferreting out its vulnerabilities and dramatizing their abuse in gripping style.”—USA Today

Zzzzzzzz. The plot was admittedly boring. I was hoping for more even halfway thru, but it continued to disappoint and I was beyond the point of no return. I love Grisham, but I consider this a sunk cost.
Great read. It was a great read however in the middle it dragged a bit but it came full circle. Great ending good guys win sometimes..
Local mafia threatens Florida ethics lawyers Who don't carry guns. Gresham writes a great story where fairly normal citizens (including the state attorneys who investigate ethics issues of judges) are put into terrifying situations where their lives are threatened by vicious gangsters who run casinos, real estate scams and murder-for-hire schemes. Intimidation is the name of their game and these gangsters are very good at it.
The Whistler. John Grisham
The Whistler. Excellent book!! I was instantly hooked and could barely put it down until I was finished. At the end, with my heart pounding, I was glad Everyone got what they deserved. 😊
The Whistler. I've read every Grisham book from day one. This is absolutely the best
Most exciting Grisham book in years!. I have read every John Grisham legal novel and this one takes me back to the early days of The Firm and The Pelican Brief. Excellent read!
Just...ok. It was good enough to kill time but it was very bland. The story started to build then good overcame and it was over. It was almost like he got tired of writing. This is one of those books you keep by the toilet at home. It'll pass the time but don't expect much more than that.
Disappointing. Most of John Grisham’s earlier books are great, but I’ve noticed since he released Calico Joe his books have gotten worse and that includes this title the Whistler. Take my advice and whistle a little tune to yourself and skip pass this story.
The Whistler. A terrific page turner with a complicated, if predictable, plot and interesting characters. Really enjoyable for me. It’s part of a good series. Thanks Mr. Grisham
The Whistler. One of the worlds best books. I do not think I have ever read a better book.
It almost tries too hard. [I received this paperback in a GoodReads win,and voluntarily reviewed it. Because I won it, it will not list as a verified purchase] "Beautiful.'It's called intimidation Clyde. That's the name of the game and that's how I run things.'" Lacy Stolz works for the Florida Board of Judicial Conduct, and she's really good at her job. She and her co worker have a case that could have the potential to rock the Florida Court System off its pedestal. Not only was there a corrupt judge, but the "Coast Mafia" and the Tappacola Indian Tribe are mixed up in a case with far reaching connections. And when her car gets totaled, her partner gets killed and she almost loses her life, she is determined to see this case through to it's end. To my thinking, John Grisham and thriller go together. In my opinion,The Firm, was my introduction to crime fiction as I rapidly devoured each of his books ( A Time to Kill is still my favorite) until, one day, I just stopped. He kept cranking them out, but the got a bit too cerebral and formulaic, like he was a professor sharing just too much information. All this to say this is my first Grisham book in a while. I think it was a bit too long with too many plot points. I did love the character Lacy Stoltz and I wanted to drop her brother off the side of a cliff. I do recommend it for its contemporary use of known news and speculation. However, it almost tries to hard.
Time for Mercy. A very thoughtful yet compelling read.
The Whistler. Riveting story of crime and justice. Hard to put down, sad to get to the last page.
The Whistler. Real page turner. Finished book in three days
Great read!!. Well written and very descriptive plot.
Good summer read. I enjoyed the story but was looking for more. It felt a bit unfinished almost rushed... guess he was trying to meet that deadline.
Newspaper account. I felt the 2nd half of book was like reading a news article about some white collar crimes. Lack of twists
Whistler. Couldn’t put it down. Great read. Highly recommend.
The Whistler. Excellent novel, mystery. Held me captive for many days reading the story and trying to determine where the author would take u next. I have enjoyed reading John Grishams books for over 20 years and he did not disappoint me now ! Excellent novel!!!! Gary Baker
The Whistler. A real page turner.
The WORST. The worst writing by John Grisham . Complete waste of money and time invested.
Great!!. One of the best books I have read of this great author. Thank you John Grisham.
The Whistler. This book was well constructed, almost too well built. The main characters and overall plot were intricately described for about 80% of the book and moved very slowly. The conclusion, in the last part of the book, moved very quickly to a fairly obvious conclusion. Overall the book was enjoyable, but lacked drama and excitement.
WOW. Fantastic. So believable I would not be surprised if I turned out to be completely true. Always liked Grisham, now very near to the top.
#All rise #. The bestseller.
Loved it!. A real page turner! Couldn’t put it down!
Fast paced. Great read.
The Whistler. An outstanding book I greatly enjoyed reading! Just thrilling. Loved all the characters (except Vonn and partners of course).
Kinda looking for more. Story was deep and interesting but lacked the big payoff.
Boring. Just boring
The Whistler. An exciting story. Enjoyed the characters. It was areal Surprise when Hugo died. Made me sad. The ending got in loved. A clearer explanation would have been appreciated
Great Read. Very interesting read and suspenseful book. Kept you guessing if characters would survive.
Great book!. 5/5 Been a long time since I read such a good book. Still one of my favorite authors. Mark ***** Diana
The whistler. I hope this was a ghost writer because if it’s not it’s the worst Grisham I’ve read and he’s lost his fastball. Hard to slog through it.
Another Grisham Masterpiece. Great read! Thoroughly absorbing.
Great read. Please make more of these!
Love The Story. Love The Book Just Started Reading It
Nice Read. After I began I had to keep going. A little slow at first, and I would’ve appreciated more description but great book overall.
The Whistler. An Overwelming obvious ending, exhaustingly summarized
The Whistler. The worst Grisham book yet.
Entertaining with many twist and turns. Well written.
It's just st ok. Nothing great
The reckoning. Where is the rest of the novel? I'm ready to read on!
Enjoyed this writing. This was an exceptional read. Was into this from the beginning. Will look forward to the next!
Borrrring. Utterly dreadful. Blithering on and on and on - no character development, and not a Single character who was remotely appealing in Any way. No plot, no point. Just a DREADFUL waste of time - would crawl on ground glass for a refund. sheesh.
Great Read. Another awesome book by Grisham that makes it hard to put down. Highly suggested if you love the genre.
Wonderful read. Mr Grisham never lets his readers down. I really enjoyed this book
Snooze fest. What a boring, drawn out book! No character building couldn't finish it shoot enough

Wow. A page turner from beginning to end
Awesome. When I started reading I couldn't stop. If this is the genre of books you read this is a good book
A great thriller. This book is has a great story and characters. I had a hard time putting the book down every time I started reading. Very well written.
The Whistler. This was a great read, I had not intended to stay up half the night to read the book but once I got stared I couldn't put it down. Another beauty by John Grisham!
The Whistler. Good book with lots of characters (at times hard to keep them all in place). I enjoyed until the end, not to predictable and an interesting story.
The whistler. John is an amazing author. I enjoy all his writings!
Standard. An excellent hook pulls you into the book and the plot is interesting. Would have liked a bit more action as it seemed to fizzle out at the end.
The Whistler. Nice story with a great ending.

Couldn't put it down.. There is nothing better than a good book you can't stop reading. The worst feeling is when the book ends because you'd love it to go on forever!!! Never read a Grisham book but will definitely look into his others.
The Whistler. AWFUL!!! I have every single book from Grisham. Disappointing! Slow moving. Not the usual page turner.
Boring predictable senseless. Total disappointment, Grisham mailed it in with this piece of crap. Boring, silly story awfully told, predictable waste of money.
Whistler. Excellent,captivating, and suspenseful.
Temper your enthusiasm. And you'll be just fine upon reading the last few pages. Grisham not what he used to be. A quick read Nothing special
Light entertainment. Quick easy and fairly engaging. Predictable and not his best work.
Who Really Wrote the Book?. This doesn't read like a Grisham.
Great book, but missing pages. Another great Grisham read, but the download had some missing pages. Will need to borrow a paper copy to read the pages that we're missing.
Not his best work. It was really slow going. Overall not engaging. I'd pass. Sorry John. You just can't hit a home run every time at bat.
A Page Turner. From the opening line, to the final word, Grisham's brilliant tale grabs the readers attention and holds on tightly! The twists and turns will keep you on the edge of your seat, as each character comes to life. You won't want to put this one down until you read the ending!
The Whistler .....blows. No pun intended. Nuff said
The Whistler. Painfully slow start but picks up speed if you stick with it. Not my favorite Grisham by a long shot but could make a decent movie.
Unfinished Whistler. Most of this book was fabulous, rich with well-defined characters. Then, it was as if the author was about to miss a deadline. The second half seems like a first draft.
The whistler. Another good Grisham read. I thought the book had a slow start. It was a bit hard to care about these characters. After the turning point of the car crash, I was hooked...finished the book in an afternoon.
The Whistler. Just Awesome!
Not one of his best.... I'm surprised to be writing a somewhat negative review of a John Grisham book. This story just didn't have the character development and storyline nuances that Mr. Grisham's book usually do. The final wrap up of the story was too general and abrupt. I realize an ending that is anything but perfect gives the reader something to think about. This however, did none of that. Sadly for once, I am not able to recommend a book by John Grisham. I look forward to his next one with high hopes.
Loved it!. Another great Grisham read!
Very shallow. I don't think Grisham actually wrote this. It is that bad!
Avid Reader. John Grisham used to be m favorite, but his last 3 books have been a little disappointing. This book was good. I consider it a page turner & I couldn't put it down. My only complaint is that it ended so abruptly.
Loved the suspense. Another well written book by John Grisham. I couldn't put it down because of the suspense. The very end was disappointing. We get to know these characters and their relationships intimately, so we want to know if Lacy and Allie forged a serious relationship and if Verna won her lawsuit. I'm not a writer and I assume a John Grisham had his reason for leaving us hanging.
Disappointing. The best part about Grisham novels are the plot twists and suspense around every corner. I also enjoy his very descriptive narratives into details concerning characters, settings and background info. These were very pedestrian in this book. I almost think someone else ghosted it, like James Patterson novels. It could have been much better if someone would have paid attention to the nuances.
The Whistler. I've read Grisham for many years and could not be more disappointed in the writter he's become. There were a few times he actually repeated himself almost word for word, setting up the same scene. I continue to feel it was just filling in material to add pages without any substance. There are MUCH better writing out there now and I believe Grisham's better days are long gone.
Disappointed. I guess I expected better. I felt like I was reading a textbook at times.
Different Perspective. Took some getting used to, since it is not surrounded by your usual courtroom. However, John Grisham did a good job of reminding the audience about another side of the law. The power of good and evil work to together to swindle the average citizen. Even when we do everything we can to fight back, some gets caught in the crosshairs. Ultimately there are sacrifices all around before some sort of justice is handed down. I'm looking forward to other books from different perspectives. Keep it up, John Grisham. A fan for Life.
Bravo. Grisham is a wonderful story teller. I have read many of his books but I must say The Whistler is certainly one of his best. Keep producing your wonderful creations, I am a real fan. Howard Nevison
Great. Another Grisham classic!!!
Hands Down Grisham's Best Book in Years. Huge fan of Grisham, but am willing to admit that some of his more recent books haven't lived up his earlier works. This book, on the other hand, was hands down his best book in his years, if not in his best. I can overstate how great this book (literally spent 6 hours today finishing it). Job well done, Mr. Grisham!
It is mind-dullingly episodic. Characters not compelling. Mushy story of generalizations. Entertaining but never memorable. Too much coincidence.
Excellent book!. Very intriguing story with many characters, but extremely interesting to the end. Love Mr Grishams books.
Always the best!. Another great John Grisham story. He continues to put out the best page turners. Can't wait for his next book.
Classic in the creative. Who else but Grisham would research these two unknown entities. Again, he brings entertainment and education together in a "what's next" thriller. Character development was good, but not his best. (Personal favorite being the crazy family members in The Testament) Can't wait for the next one!
The Whistler by John Grisham. I have read all of Grisham's books and I am sorry to say this is his weakest effort so far. I still enjoy his writing style but this book did not grab me and force me to not put it done like most of his others books.
Not his best . . very disappointed. Out of all the books by Grisham, The Whistler has got to be the worst he has written in my opinion. I was more than half-way through the book before I was drawn into it . . then the ending was wrapped up so fast . . I think Grisham was tired of writing and I was tired of reading. This book is nothing like the wonderful books Grisham normally delivers . . complete waste of my time, and my money.
The whistler. Fantastic thrilling read that is probably more fact than fiction, which makes it a scary political problem! Thanks to Grisham for tackling the sensitive issues of crime, casinos, politicians, judicial system and American justice!
Pretty good. I'm sorry I read it so quickly. Now I have to wait another year for a new one. I did find it very slow and talky and heavily populated with characters and dialogue that did not move the plot. It finally got interesting at the time of the car crash. Insights into the mafia group were condensed too tightly. And, as usual, the ending ties up all the sections neatly but in few pages. I wish the pacing was better so action could be better integrated into the overall telling of the tale. I'm not sure I got a feeling about Lacey as a character. I don't think I can even describe her. She was pretty bland. To me, Meyers was most color full. This was not his best. But still a good read. And I always learn new wrinkles about the law.
Entertaining. Entertaining but lacking the depth of the typical Grisham novel.
A fantastic book, a must read!. John Grisham at his best! This book is one of Grisham's best works, as good as "The Oelican Brief", "The Rainmaker", and the best of them all, "A Time to Kill". Thank you Mr. Grisham.
The Whistler. A good read. Great for a long airplane ride. I'd certainly recommend it.
Not Grisham's best. Grisham is the master of legal thrillers, but his talents fade fast when he leaves the courtroom and its environs. The Whistler is a crime novel - or is it a political piece - or maybe a ?? Whatever it is, the writing is amateurish and stilted, the dialogue corny, the characters undeveloped, and the page-after-page of colorless narrative boring. Grisham should stick to courtroom tales and leave the other genres to thise who write them best.
The Whistler. Once again a great novel from the best author of our time.
Great Mystery. Classic good guy vs bad guy book as pnly John Grisham can do it
Far from his best. He really phoned this one in. Not a terrible read but no plots twists or surprises. You could guess where it ended and still not all the blanks were filled in. We should all get half our $$ back.
Not much punch. I kept waiting for this story to get more interesting than a newspaper article. A twist or turn somewhere. It never did. Half way through the book I was so aware that this was scripted that I no longer enjoyed it.
The Whistler. I have read 13 of J Grisham's books and loved them all. Not this one though. You would think he would offer a free book every now and then.
Predictable. Cliche and overly worked. Not a fun read.
Whistler. Another in the line of great books. Can't wait for the next one. John Grisham is the best!!
Great. Typical Grisham. Very believable. A real page turner with lots of suspense.
Disappointing. Well below his usual standards...
Not his best. I went out and bought this shortly after being released. Story is slow to develop with a lack luster ending. Not one of this author's best.
