In this generation-defining self-help guide, a superstar blogger cuts through the crap to show us how to stop trying to be "positive" all the time so that we can truly become better, happier people.

For decades, we’ve been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F**k positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let’s be honest, shit is f**ked and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn’t sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is—a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is his antidote to the coddling, let’s-all-feel-good mindset that has infected American society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Manson makes the argument, backed both by academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limited—"not everybody can be extraordinary, there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault." Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them. Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek.

There are only so many things we can give a f**k about so we need to figure out which ones really matter, Manson makes clear. While money is nice, caring about what you do with your life is better, because true wealth is about experience. A much-needed grab-you-by-the-shoulders-and-look-you-in-the-eye moment of real-talk, filled with entertaining stories and profane, ruthless humor, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is a refreshing slap for a generation to help them lead contented, grounded lives.

Read when it calls to u. I have known about this book for years, always wanted to read it, never quite got around to buying it.. for whatever reasons now that I’ve read it i can say I am not disappointed Great read.. perfect timing

Kani-Andy

Eye opening at the very least. I recently fell into pretty bad anxiety attacks about how I’m not doing enough or how I don’t have friends and all that, and after reading this book it really helped me put my life and future into a more stable perspective. I don’t want to spoil just in case anyone does want to read it (fantastic btw) but it’s definitely an eye opening experience and at the very least made me question some things about the myself

Jdorris1906

Eye-opening. This book is a deep look into self. One day I hope you will read and go on a journey of self care.

Anfernee!

A great book about values. This book is very great in teaching what is truly important in life and what not to give a f about. This book really go into detail on all the key values and give amazing examples too. Definitely recommend if you feel like you struggle with finding something worth giving a f about or you think you care about too many things!!

Calvinflacco

Very good and fast read. Very good book

Linpinfin

Amazing Book. I am someone who has struggled with panic disorder, anxiety and unresolved complex grief. This book has made an immediate impact on my life and I will forever keep the teachings of it in my thoughts. Highly recommend.

Bretward

Interesting viewpoint. An interesting read and take on how one might deal with day to day challenges that life brings. While most of the content is obvious, sometimes we forget to remind ourselves of how silly humans, including myself, truly are. Life’s a journey and it’s not about the end game. The path along the way is what we should treasure.

Detiveauxx

Wouldn’t recommend. A difficult read.

Kailynnnnnn

Helping me get through my quarter life crisis :). I’m an English major and an English teacher as well. Since graduating college almost 3 years ago I have started many books but I haven’t been able to finish reading until now. This book is super impactful especially since I’m going through what I believe is my quarter life crisis. I’ve recently been dealing with some awful anxiety and this book has been the best help. It hasn’t been a week and sadly I’m almost done with it.

MeatWadThaGod

Enlightening. I finished reading this book today… I’ll probably go to bed reading it tonight. It’s raw, it’s candid, and it’s worth the money.

Amarijasz

Not a self help book. The book opened my eyes to how I live my life daily and to decide what is important to me and worthwhile to pour energy into on my short flight around the globe .

TZ Girl

Positive Perspective of life and death. This book has truly given me a different insight of both life and death by appreciating both and realizing that one must have a full understanding of death in order to fully live with no guilt and minimal stress. This book also highlights the importance of challenges and being able to overcome those challenges without expecting others to help you.

That is one to sell a book ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️. Rehash of old Material-one star at best‼️‼️‼️👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

KTLyons

Meh…. There is some good content throughout the book; however, the author’s self referential diarrhea needs to be worked around to reach it.

Bobochimpcracray

Great read- once you get past the “f-bombs”. Being one of Christian faith, I was not sure I wanted to read this one. I am glad I did. It was a great book with wisdom and historical relevance to his point. I am grateful I didn’t allow all of the “f bombs” to influence my decision. A must read!

TerrywithT

Jenna_Tolls

Hilarious therefore intellectually stimulating. Title sums it up.

Rob Warner

Didn’t hold my interest.. Wasn’t my cup of tea. I was hoping for something more like Dale Carnegie’s How to stop worrying and start living and this book fell short of that.

LAlejandroFeliz

Good.. Easy to read. Packed with relevant tools for contemporary lifestyle.

Fantastic !!!. Amazing way to wake yourself up from the nightmare. It’s a pleasure to read and understand. Everyone won’t understand, but those who get it will. Thank you for writing this in such a candid manner. Eternally grateful.-Jae Law Aka Hindrix.

Perfect. Great book to reset our brain to his basic

TrevBaker

This book will make you think…. It’s ridiculous how much this book opened my eyes. You must read it. Everyone should read it. It should be in high-school curriculum as a mandatory read to graduate.

Jim L'Ecuyer

Quit Reading. Poorly written an incoherent most of the time. I just decided to cut my losses and quit reading it.

Bellamaestri

Awesome read!. I just began reading (for pleasure) again after finishing school and this was the first book I finished so far. Not only does the author make some great jokes, but he makes a lot of his points simple, without the sugar coating (and I think we all need that). It’s an honest, well-written book and I have recommended it to a couple of people! It really is a self-improvement book rather than a self-help one and I truly enjoy that. If you don’t know the difference between the two, well I’d say this book is a great place to start. Thank you Mark :)

Berg52

Really gave me insight. This book is amazing and I’ve really gained a different perspective on life!

Haggjhj

Truly a work of art. I’m not one to leave reviews on books, or anything i endeavour in to be honest, but the fact that I am currently, has a lot to say about to magnitude of this book. Inspiring to say the very least, a must read.

Cdubuf

Amazing book. I’ve never been one for reading. Mark’s books make me re-think my life and my values and push me to be a better person. On to his next book now.

Aaron4365

The greatest book I’ve read...to date. It’s quite plainly, a book choosing not to care about things that don’t need to. Caring takes energy and this book encourages you to realize not every person who cuts you off in traffic doesn’t require any response. This book will literally save years of your life 👍👍👍👍👍

Zzzxigua

too expensive. so expensive

CanadianChris16

Worth the Read. Overall the book was good, but it wasn’t as if every chapter was mind-blowing. There are a few key messages and strong chapters that make the whole book worth reading. Definitely a change in perspective and a nice reminder that everyone is going through the same thing.

Amandeep mudhar

Truth at your face. I hates reading and I’m not the person to handover a book to and expect him to read. I’m more of a visual/movie kind of a person. This is my first ever book that I’ve read in my life and surprisingly finished it, cause i guess i needed to hear all of that. I just love reading now. Books are my new best friend.

Troyapple"@

3.5/5. Good read and awesome for self reflection. Great words to scout and add to vocabulary box.

Better than expected. Yes, some of the stories from his blog are in the book. Having said that, the book is really great I'm so glad I bought it. I will definitely be picking up extra copies as gifts for friends this Christmas.

Lavighuman

One of the greatest book. One of the most amazing book. I will read it again forsure. It gave me the sense of reality

Cazewed

Totally worth reading.. Amazing book, the author has a way with words.

NeilMac21

$&@! What you know!. Take time and read this book. You’ll learn more about yourself and what you want out of life.

Kevin.Willis

An eye opening reality check. This book needs to be part of school curriculum. Its the kind of book that regularly makes you laugh, not necessarily because what you just read is funny, but rather because you can't believe that you're not as special as you thought you were, and someone is writing about it as if they know you - and god damn does it ever feel good. 10/10 would recommend to anyone.

Captain Nelson

Long and boring. The book has many stories, but nothing concrete to help me. I tried and tried reading it but I gave up. It should have been a 50 page book with tricks , lessons to help.I got nothing from what I was able to read. I can’t believe it was a bestseller.

Ab!ke

Enlightened. Thank you for this.

Jknhkvftyiii

love and thought provoking. an amazing read. and highly recommend. through a series of different real life stories of his own and many others, mark manson is able to convey key points to readers. point in which should be considered and used when making decisions throughout life.

Tree_Fan

001jenn001

Great book. It brings self awareness that we need. It helped me a lot put thing back in line.

MaryJolie614

Different view point. I had so many AhA moments when reading this book. It offers a really different perspective on life. It’s controversial approach to life in it essence brings out the most important essence of living. Very intriguing read.

NightshadeLord

Great book. You learn a lot. Period.

Ikash999

100%. A bit of spelling errors, but you don’t even mind when the book is speaking your mind 😉

AndyChed

Canada. Mark is brilliant, compelling and truthful. I can't wait to see more books from this writer.

Natalie SJ

I needed this book. This book came at a time when I needed it the most. I have always been a ‘blunt, to the point, say it like it is person’ but the past few months I was repressing who I am. It started by being involved in a work culture lead by a narcissistic bully and then unravelled as she brought on a ‘mini me’ of herself. The way I dealt with chastising emails, ridiculous self involved social media posts, culture of ‘don’t complain - you’re bringing the rest of us down’, was to keep my head down. I shut-up. I stayed quiet. I ‘ignored’ the best way I could. Until one day, today, I was about 3/4 of the way through this book, and I saw a good friend / colleague get berated for simply questioning the logic of a decision - and I decided enough was enough. Why? Because I heard the words ‘if something is bugging you, confront it’ take action. And I did. And it felt sooo great. I may never change the narcissist, but I can, and I will, be true to me. And stand up for what I believe in. Thank-you for this!!

AndyRad

A book you will come back to again and again.. Wow, such a deep book yet humorous. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I highlighted far more paragraphs to come back to in this book than any other ‘self help’ book I have read. And I read a lot!

Tommenn

My new bible. Enjoyed every word. Definitely will read this again until every chapter sticks to my brain!

Staargirl00

Good but repetitive. The Books has amazing analogies, really smart way of seeing life and a different approach to our reality . However I do feel like there was repetition of the same concept in the middle of the book . But after a few hours pages it became interesting again .

Yok R

Life Changing. My whole life I’ve suffered with anxiety. Which led me to living a life where I was consistently trying to impress other people. You can say my mind was prisoned in a way. It also destroyed my confidence and Self-Esteem. After reading this book it’s helped me clarify my attributes and what the meaning of life is. Mark Manson I’m grateful for this book and appreciate the time and effort you invested to put this together. One of the best investments I’ve made and I’m not referring to the money, TIME, my time.

Charlotte412

Not mind blowing. Great premise but lacks depth and becomes too repetitive. A book that should’ve remained a blog.

Londoncat

Helps you reflect on what matters. Well written and enjoyable whilst thoroughly thought provoking.

Gregoski

Just fantastic, great read from start to finish.. This is by far the most touching book I have read so far, I couldn't believe how many life events in this book relates to my life. Great stuff.

Abamaril

Some really powerful take aways. Some of the most powerful take aways from the book: - Happiness Comes from Solving Problems If you’re avoiding your problems or think you don’t have any problems, then you’re going to make yourself miserable. If you think you have problems that you can’t solve, you will likewise make yourself miserable. The secret sauce is in the solving of the problems, not in not having problems in the first place. - Make choices about what to dedicate yourself to and commit to them. When you’re pursuing a wide breadth of experiences, there are diminishing returns to each new adventure, each by new person or thing. breadth of experience is likely necessary and desirable when you’re young— you have to go out there and discover what seems worth investing yourself in, but depth is where the gold is buried. You have to stay committed to something and go deep into it. That’s true in relationships, in a career, in building a great lifestyle—in everything.

RizzSims

Absolutely brilliant and what everyone could do with reading. My my my. This was my first time reading a book considered to be “self-help” as I have been sceptical about such books. This book is for anyone who has been left feeling like they endured constant internal conflict in what they are doing in life or the people they have around them. I really wish more people broke things down like Mark has done. This book has proven that complex subjects can be explained in simpler ways, which enable the reader to easily digest AND without the use of technical terms. Everything in here is what I have thought but could never explain to someone and it’s so refreshing to read that someone out there has the same outlook on life, especially with the effects of social media on people’s values and behaviours (this is coming from someone who is in their late 20s!!) Will definitely be recommending this to people I know and are open to hear the truth!

Adamjasonmorris

Wow!. Amazing book that is written well and does exactly what it says, explores a fine art of becoming happy. Would recommend to anyone.

Dodidal3

Dodi. Great book 👍🏼

Inthemood72

Written by a self-indulgent narcissist. Save your money and don’t bother with this book.

Benweimy

Grounded and justified. Although slightly repetitive at times, this is a great look at our existence, marking what is important and what isn’t. It starts with funny life comparisons and moves to a more psychological and profound review of life. It ends with a personal experience and life-changing moment and it’s effects. I really liked it. I’m definitely going to read it again to make sure I’ve absorbed it all.

Asdfvvvbhhgff

My dream book. Basically me any given day

Seharish tariq

Best read for people who have interest in sociology and psychology. Refreshing, straightforward, honest and brutal at times

Bex_ford

A good read. I enjoyed this book but it wasn’t mind blowing

Tomato_10

Marvellous!!!. The best book I’ve ever read. Super interesting, deep, but funny!

Maryhallett

Brilliant book. This book made me think about the things I usually wouldn’t. Probably one of the best ‘self-help’ books I’ve read actually, considering the approach is completely different to what I’m used to. The writing style was also very easy to understand and interpret, putting things into perspective for me. I would recommend this book anyone, but especially to those who tend to care about what others think and those who fear trying new things out!

Failed Dieter

Fun but profound. Mark has a great conversational laid back style but packs a massive punch right at the end. Much like life.

D._.ke

REAL. A beautiful book on what truly matters in life. I laughed, looked inward at my flaws and I also cried.

Choto Babu Ali

Hi block craft

SUPER DUMB bad influence. Didn’t even read it Ps I would do zero stars but I can not

Clutch K

Great read. Really enjoyed this, gave me a new perspective on life.

John Konnakkottu

Great Read. A lot of the concepts in the book seemed very relevant to what was going on in my life, and I ended up not being able to put it down.

BrainXP

Better than the free sample. I read the free sample available on iBooks which was full of ‘fook this, fook that, and fook you and fook everything’ (that’s how I read it really) and thought no way I was going to read this book...it had many good reviews so I decided to go against my first impression... and surprisingly the book is actually well thought with interesting concepts which made me question my perception of life. Five stars and I guess as the saying goes “don’t judge the book by its cover” or in this case the free sample full of ‘fooking’ things.

Ichigatsuai

Such a good read. This made me question myself a lot about my values. Having to self reflect after a break up, this has really helped me a lot with processing things with myself.

Liannamarie87

Honestly, the best 'Self Help' Book EVER. I've read a lot of self help books over the years, but none like this one. Marks written this so well that it's genuinely had a positive effect on my life in that I've taken in what he has said and I've put it into practice and would you believe it... He's right! Would absolutely recommend this (already have convinced my friends to buy it!) to anyone, particularly if you are going through a hard time.

Jumbud

Thought provoking. I enjoyed this book in a way that made me see things differently and definitely made me think about how I live my life and how I could improve my life by thinking differently. Thought provoking indeed! I’m looking forward to reading the next book!

LoveStudlyMcStudMuffin

For people who can’t meditate. Very good at explaining the impenetrable world of “inner work” in terms that I understand and can use practically. And a gifted writer and wit to boot.

Aashcx

Funny and smart.. Candid and straightforward, Manson delves into topics which would traditionally trigger an existential crisis with lighthearted banter. A very enjoyable and interesting read.

Jazza. oi

Mind blowing. Wow

PFF1977

An affirmation to your own greatness. This book affirms you while confronting you raw and bare like an old friend you barely knew from that one mmorpg, or from the alcohol binge party you used to rage at without fear of honesty. Excellent for truth seekers confronting themselves, about what they care for too much and too little. Looking forward to reading this again.

Eye opener…. This is one of the best books I’ve read in a while. Really one of the best I’ve ever read. An absolute must read no matter what stage of life you may be in.

Tbowthegreat

Excellent perspective. I tend to be an eternal realist and don’t get too high or low on things. This book has helped me realize the benefits that can bring and the side effects of not caring too much. If you struggle with self criticism then maybe this can help with a healthy perspective!

Wild cat queen

Noplacia123

Insults the reader. This guy's biggest fan is himself. Read this if you like to be insulted.

Mikemur81

Wow. I truly enjoyed this book. Manson, has captured some of his lessons learned throughout life. And paints a vivid picture of how everyday trivial occasions do not ultimate define us. Death is always looming, so life should be grooming… grooming us to be all we can be. We never know when it’s time.

Life changing.. I have read this book for the 3rd time since I’ve gotten it a year and a half ago. Every time it has given me something else to learn and take in. Never disappoints. I have recommended this to every person I talk to every time I have a chance. The author is very blunt and makes you feel like he’s the friend you need in life who is giving you advice about life. I have now bought the audio and it’s that much better and funnier. I encourage you to read this if you are serious about putting in change into your life without any excuses because this will teach you to take responsibility for your actions and how to react or not react to things. Please read! Take many notes!

Best Life Changing Book. This book is all about perspective, I loved it because of how eye opening it is. I never really noticed how much nonsense I was really holding on to till this book, very helpful book 10/10

Great read. This was a great book overall. I thought it was humorous yet sensitive and filled with a lot of positivity. It’s simple, doesn’t overthink and over complicate.
