The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson Book Summary

#1 New York Times Bestseller

Over 10 million copies sold

In this generation-defining self-help guide, a superstar blogger cuts through the crap to show us how to stop trying to be "positive" all the time so that we can truly become better, happier people.

For decades, we’ve been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F**k positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let’s be honest, shit is f**ked and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn’t sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is—a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is his antidote to the coddling, let’s-all-feel-good mindset that has infected American society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Manson makes the argument, backed both by academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limited—"not everybody can be extraordinary, there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault." Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them. Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek.

There are only so many things we can give a f**k about so we need to figure out which ones really matter, Manson makes clear. While money is nice, caring about what you do with your life is better, because true wealth is about experience. A much-needed grab-you-by-the-shoulders-and-look-you-in-the-eye moment of real-talk, filled with entertaining stories and profane, ruthless humor, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is a refreshing slap for a generation to help them lead contented, grounded lives.

Well done Mark , Well done

I have known about this book for years, always wanted to read it, never quite got around to buying it.. for whatever reasons now that I’ve read it i can say I am not disappointed Great read.. perfect timing

I really change my point of you how I see people now

Great read ! Fantastic

Very good book

An interesting read and take on how one might deal with day to day challenges that life brings. While most of the content is obvious, sometimes we forget to remind ourselves of how silly humans, including myself, truly are. Life’s a journey and it’s not about the end game. The path along the way is what we should treasure.

Fresh and thought provoking. Highly recommend.

I literally cried the last chapter… but I don’t give a F. I loved this book!

This book really sunk into my soul. Its a lot to process. It hurts. However, it gives me new things, and perspectives to try into my own life.

I barely read books but this was a good read , a lot of topics to keep in mind which will help you in everyday life

This book has truly given me a different insight of both life and death by appreciating both and realizing that one must have a full understanding of death in order to fully live with no guilt and minimal stress. This book also highlights the importance of challenges and being able to overcome those challenges without expecting others to help you.

After the first third of the book, I really lost momentum in reading it. But up to that point I loved it.

Title sums it up.

This Book was nothing short of Amazing and immensely delivered. I’m as Excited to read the second book upon Hope! Mark Manson… Thank you, HVAB out !

Something in this for everyone!

Read it; listened to the words and let it change my life. It did. Now, I stand and reflect on the cliff, too.

A must read!!!! Everyone should read this book at least once, some of us more than once!

This book is a deep look into self. One day I hope you will read and go on a journey of self care.

I absolutely loved this book, Mark wrote many things I didn’t know I needed to hear.

This book is all about perspective, I loved it because of how eye opening it is. I never really noticed how much nonsense I was really holding on to till this book, very helpful book 10/10

Paid for the book only got 22 pages

Amazing. Absolutely life changing. Cannot recommend enough.

Incredible read. Changes my outlook on so many aspects of life!

I’m in my late twenties, feel like I’m letting the days pass me by.. I felt it was destined for me to read this as it continued to pop up on my recommended list. I’m so glad I read this, I understand myself a little more, and am willing to ask the hard questions. We are worth investing in ourselves. This book was fantastic, would highly recommend!

Must read

So good

I have read this book for the 3rd time since I’ve gotten it a year and a half ago. Every time it has given me something else to learn and take in. Never disappoints. I have recommended this to every person I talk to every time I have a chance. The author is very blunt and makes you feel like he’s the friend you need in life who is giving you advice about life. I have now bought the audio and it’s that much better and funnier. I encourage you to read this if you are serious about putting in change into your life without any excuses because this will teach you to take responsibility for your actions and how to react or not react to things. Please read! Take many notes!

I reread this book every year and take a new perspective from it every time. Worth the investment, and is one of those transformational books. Love it!!

Expected to see one thing. Got something very different, perspective. Excellent read.

An amazing blend of humor and intellect.

Great read with thousands of different outcomes and thought processes in store. A refreshing perspective of Life and growth methods.

It’s like you’re in conversation with the author. Brilliant techniques, astounding points, life changing lessons … highly recommend.

Very great author! Love all his stories in the book, and it wasn’t boting at all.

This guy's biggest fan is himself. Read this if you like to be insulted.

This book affirms you while confronting you raw and bare like an old friend you barely knew from that one mmorpg, or from the alcohol binge party you used to rage at without fear of honesty. Excellent for truth seekers confronting themselves, about what they care for too much and too little. Looking forward to reading this again.

This book changed my view on a lot of things in my life. I wish i would have read it sooner.

Thank you Mark

Love the sense of humor used to find a deeper understanding of life. Great read!

Definitely will help you become more introspective and aware of your trivialities. It’s well written with interesting stories and analogies we all can relate with.

This book changed me as a person if your looking for a book to make you a better person in EVERY aspect of life this is the one.

I knew that going into this book it was going to teach me something. But boy, I was not expecting to have gained such new insight on so many things. I hope that one day I am able to meet the author and tell him just how much this book means to because this book has seriously changed my life.

i absolutely loved this book. gives you a realistic look at life. definitely helpful to open your eyes.

Great read with some nice takeaways. Enjoyed the humor along the way, too!

I truly enjoyed this book. Manson, has captured some of his lessons learned throughout life. And paints a vivid picture of how everyday trivial occasions do not ultimate define us. Death is always looming, so life should be grooming… grooming us to be all we can be. We never know when it’s time.

Great life advice!

It’s crazy how someone can put their thoughts on paper and change the perspective of life for many this is an eye opening book and I feel changed reading this absolutely extraordinary page turner I will suggest this book to anyone with a pair eyes and ears.

This was a great book overall. I thought it was humorous yet sensitive and filled with a lot of positivity. It’s simple, doesn’t overthink and over complicate.

10/10 recommend

I tend to be an eternal realist and don’t get too high or low on things. This book has helped me realize the benefits that can bring and the side effects of not caring too much. If you struggle with self criticism then maybe this can help with a healthy perspective!

Great book! A must read!

This book gives you a new approach towards your opinion on life while evaluating your values and decisions. Great read 👍🏻

Great book to reset our brain to his basic

I had so many AhA moments when reading this book. It offers a really different perspective on life. It’s controversial approach to life in it essence brings out the most important essence of living. Very intriguing read.

The book has many stories, but nothing concrete to help me. I tried and tried reading it but I gave up. It should have been a 50 page book with tricks , lessons to help.I got nothing from what I was able to read. I can’t believe it was a bestseller.

Amazing book, the author has a way with words.

it totally changes my perspective of life.

I’m not one to leave reviews on books, or anything i endeavour in to be honest, but the fact that I am currently, has a lot to say about to magnitude of this book. Inspiring to say the very least, a must read.

Pretty interesting book. Really emphasizes how our whole life can change if we get our priorities straight...

It brings self awareness that we need. It helped me a lot put thing back in line.

Loved it

This book needs to be part of school curriculum. Its the kind of book that regularly makes you laugh, not necessarily because what you just read is funny, but rather because you can't believe that you're not as special as you thought you were, and someone is writing about it as if they know you - and god damn does it ever feel good. 10/10 would recommend to anyone.

I’ve never been one for reading. Mark’s books make me re-think my life and my values and push me to be a better person. On to his next book now.

Good read and awesome for self reflection. Great words to scout and add to vocabulary box.

an amazing read. and highly recommend. through a series of different real life stories of his own and many others, mark manson is able to convey key points to readers. point in which should be considered and used when making decisions throughout life.

Awesome book 📖🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

It’s quite plainly, a book choosing not to care about things that don’t need to. Caring takes energy and this book encourages you to realize not every person who cuts you off in traffic doesn’t require any response. This book will literally save years of your life 👍👍👍👍👍

I just began reading (for pleasure) again after finishing school and this was the first book I finished so far. Not only does the author make some great jokes, but he makes a lot of his points simple, without the sugar coating (and I think we all need that). It’s an honest, well-written book and I have recommended it to a couple of people! It really is a self-improvement book rather than a self-help one and I truly enjoy that. If you don’t know the difference between the two, well I’d say this book is a great place to start. Thank you Mark :)

I hates reading and I’m not the person to handover a book to and expect him to read. I’m more of a visual/movie kind of a person. This is my first ever book that I’ve read in my life and surprisingly finished it, cause i guess i needed to hear all of that. I just love reading now. Books are my new best friend.

This book came at a time when I needed it the most. I have always been a ‘blunt, to the point, say it like it is person’ but the past few months I was repressing who I am. It started by being involved in a work culture lead by a narcissistic bully and then unravelled as she brought on a ‘mini me’ of herself. The way I dealt with chastising emails, ridiculous self involved social media posts, culture of ‘don’t complain - you’re bringing the rest of us down’, was to keep my head down. I shut-up. I stayed quiet. I ‘ignored’ the best way I could. Until one day, today, I was about 3/4 of the way through this book, and I saw a good friend / colleague get berated for simply questioning the logic of a decision - and I decided enough was enough. Why? Because I heard the words ‘if something is bugging you, confront it’ take action. And I did. And it felt sooo great. I may never change the narcissist, but I can, and I will, be true to me. And stand up for what I believe in. Thank-you for this!!

This book is amazing and I’ve really gained a different perspective on life!

so expensive

Overall the book was good, but it wasn’t as if every chapter was mind-blowing. There are a few key messages and strong chapters that make the whole book worth reading. Definitely a change in perspective and a nice reminder that everyone is going through the same thing.

You learn a lot. Period.

Take time and read this book. You’ll learn more about yourself and what you want out of life.

It’s ridiculous how much this book opened my eyes. You must read it. Everyone should read it. It should be in high-school curriculum as a mandatory read to graduate.

Mark you have my deepest gratitude for helping me open my eyes and face my fears with a smile thank you

A bit of spelling errors, but you don’t even mind when the book is speaking your mind 😉

One of the most amazing book. I will read it again forsure. It gave me the sense of reality

Poorly written an incoherent most of the time. I just decided to cut my losses and quit reading it.

Thank you for this.

Yes, some of the stories from his blog are in the book. Having said that, the book is really great I'm so glad I bought it. I will definitely be picking up extra copies as gifts for friends this Christmas.

Mark is brilliant, compelling and truthful. I can't wait to see more books from this writer.

Although slightly repetitive at times, this is a great look at our existence, marking what is important and what isn’t. It starts with funny life comparisons and moves to a more psychological and profound review of life. It ends with a personal experience and life-changing moment and it’s effects. I really liked it. I’m definitely going to read it again to make sure I’ve absorbed it all.

A lot of the concepts in the book seemed very relevant to what was going on in my life, and I ended up not being able to put it down.

Candid and straightforward, Manson delves into topics which would traditionally trigger an existential crisis with lighthearted banter. A very enjoyable and interesting read.

I enjoyed this book in a way that made me see things differently and definitely made me think about how I live my life and how I could improve my life by thinking differently. Thought provoking indeed! I’m looking forward to reading the next book!

This book made me think about the things I usually wouldn’t. Probably one of the best ‘self-help’ books I’ve read actually, considering the approach is completely different to what I’m used to. The writing style was also very easy to understand and interpret, putting things into perspective for me. I would recommend this book anyone, but especially to those who tend to care about what others think and those who fear trying new things out!

Really enjoyed this, gave me a new perspective on life.

Inspiring

Great book 👍🏼

This book changed my whole view of the world. For this past few weeks I decided to put everything aside and focus on this book with all my attention. I am yet still thinking about some concepts which are new to me like the changing of “values” and what really stood out to me was looking at everything with uncertainty; I’m yet working on understanding it through experience. In general this book helped me overlook things, it gave me ways I can grow as a person in a very way no other person has ever helped me and I wish I was taught this in school. I got everything I wanted from a self-help book and I’m very grateful to my friend who introduced this book to me.

This book gives a reality check in the best way, well worth the read.

My my my. This was my first time reading a book considered to be “self-help” as I have been sceptical about such books. This book is for anyone who has been left feeling like they endured constant internal conflict in what they are doing in life or the people they have around them. I really wish more people broke things down like Mark has done. This book has proven that complex subjects can be explained in simpler ways, which enable the reader to easily digest AND without the use of technical terms. Everything in here is what I have thought but could never explain to someone and it’s so refreshing to read that someone out there has the same outlook on life, especially with the effects of social media on people’s values and behaviours (this is coming from someone who is in their late 20s!!) Will definitely be recommending this to people I know and are open to hear the truth!

Great premise but lacks depth and becomes too repetitive. A book that should’ve remained a blog.

I enjoyed this book but it wasn’t mind blowing

My whole life I’ve suffered with anxiety. Which led me to living a life where I was consistently trying to impress other people. You can say my mind was prisoned in a way. It also destroyed my confidence and Self-Esteem. After reading this book it’s helped me clarify my attributes and what the meaning of life is. Mark Manson I’m grateful for this book and appreciate the time and effort you invested to put this together. One of the best investments I’ve made and I’m not referring to the money, TIME, my time.

Wow

Very good at explaining the impenetrable world of “inner work” in terms that I understand and can use practically. And a gifted writer and wit to boot.

Save your money and don’t bother with this book.

This is a book written by an ex-banker, Md.AliAkram who resides in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The book deals with the technical terms used in the capital market, banking, insurance and leasing companies . It also mentions accounting , economic and legal terms. The book is very useful for bankers, insurers, economists and those who are trading in the share market. The ex- editor, Financial Express, Late Mr.Moezzem Hussain wrote the prologue of the book and highly lauded its contents. The publisher of the book , Mr. A.M.M. Ali ABBAS may be contacted if any body is interested to purchase the book. We are also looking for publishers in USA or Europe.

Mark has a great conversational laid back style but packs a massive punch right at the end. Much like life.

The Books has amazing analogies, really smart way of seeing life and a different approach to our reality . However I do feel like there was repetition of the same concept in the middle of the book . But after a few hours pages it became interesting again .

Not worth the money !

I read the free sample available on iBooks which was full of ‘fook this, fook that, and fook you and fook everything’ (that’s how I read it really) and thought no way I was going to read this book...it had many good reviews so I decided to go against my first impression... and surprisingly the book is actually well thought with interesting concepts which made me question my perception of life. Five stars and I guess as the saying goes “don’t judge the book by its cover” or in this case the free sample full of ‘fooking’ things.

Refreshing, straightforward, honest and brutal at times

Basically me any given day

Wow, such a deep book yet humorous. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I highlighted far more paragraphs to come back to in this book than any other ‘self help’ book I have read. And I read a lot!

Amazing book. Very true and relatable. Could not put it down!

Enjoyed every word. Definitely will read this again until every chapter sticks to my brain!

Making a conscious decision of what is important has already made such a difference in my life

Amazing book that is written well and does exactly what it says, explores a fine art of becoming happy. Would recommend to anyone.

I've read a lot of self help books over the years, but none like this one. Marks written this so well that it's genuinely had a positive effect on my life in that I've taken in what he has said and I've put it into practice and would you believe it... He's right! Would absolutely recommend this (already have convinced my friends to buy it!) to anyone, particularly if you are going through a hard time.

This is by far the most touching book I have read so far, I couldn't believe how many life events in this book relates to my life. Great stuff.

narrator makes it incredibly entertaining!

This book forces you to see the error in your ways, you thinking, your habits, everything about you. It addresses all aspects of life and how you’ve gone through life completely wrong, it makes you think beyond your usual and be honest with yourself. A great read!

So good and transparent. I really enjoyed reading this book.

Just, wow 👏

Great book!

Wish I could get a refund 😕

Despite any suffering, let go and let… (enter w/e here) . Drags on like a muhh..

I really enjoyed this read. It forces you to put things in perspective and reevaluate how your scale your life and your decisions. I recommend to anyone and everyone.

This is one of the best books I’ve read in a while. Really one of the best I’ve ever read. An absolute must read no matter what stage of life you may be in.

No punches pulled; Loved the style and content. Really resonated with me.

A how to guide for navigating modern life. Seriously the best book i’ve read in years.

Read it

Practical and easy to understand.

There were some good points yet at times it rambles.

Excellent .

10/10 would recommend reading this, it completely changed my perspective on the way i live and the choices i make

I give the book a letter grade of a B. It has some true gems of wisdom but overall I felt that the author wasn’t providing as much substance as I was looking for.

This books really makes you think, think deeper about thing you care about and don’t care about. This book helped me realize I need to loosen up a little and live more. Be yourself.

Clarity. That is what this book did for me, give me clarity on exactly what life is about. I have dedicated my life to the service of others, to find myself, and to make enough money to be able to live comfortably. Although I enjoy what I do, I think that somewhere along the way, I missed replaced my metric value with something frivolous, and that left me feeling empty. I am slowly getting back to what’s really important and this book is a great guide for me in that sense.

If you are looking for a book that will inspire you, that will help you out of your depressive rut… this is the book. This is hands down the best book I have ever read, Mansons way of looking at the world, is similar to what most of us think we see, but he conveys it in a way that is undeniable, and boarder lining overwhelming. I am usually not a big reader, but I read this book a second time less than a month after I finished it the first, and than several months after that. I love this book, and cannot thank Manson enough, for sharing his views.

And thank you again

Great book

I was poised to buy this, but the sample in the English audio book was in another language (Japanese). I’m not risking getting it in the wrong language and fighting to get it changed or refunded.

Best book I’ve ever read

Excellent read. Focus on what is truly important and what legacy you want to leave, what difference you want to make to this project called humanity. Thank you.

I think this should be required reading for college freshmen.

I liked this one. Witty and insightful. Definitely worth it.

Good book, a lot of high lighting. Will need to reread and refer back to chapters to have a better understanding

This book has an entertaining way to address “life” and what you may think is important and how to “fine tune” that for a fulfilling life. Makes one reflect in a simple way, not in a way that makes you turn your back or resist. The author shares stories about real-life people and outcomes along with his “take” on how results could have been better, for the purpose of yielding a life with accountability and success.

When you feel the most alive is near death... I’m no longer struggling as much to understand what’s up in my head. Thanks

This book absolutely worth reading! You won't regret spending time reading it, the whole idea of the book is about telling you how to deal with your life's values. It doesn't give you fake inspirational sentences. when you read it you will face reality as it is, which i found it really cool.

This is the one

After reading the first few pages, I almost abandoned this book. It wasn’t what I wanted to read. Somewhere in the second chapter, I realized it was what I needed to read. Finishing the book confirmed it. It has pearls of wisdom tucked in between unconventional words and stories. The writing is rough at times, but worth the struggle.

Really insightful...a spoonful of hope reminding us that we always have a choice...

Loved this book!!! Definitely puts things into perspective

Nothing special

I read this book every year, so motivating and puts life into perspective.

Definitely recommend to anyone.

Just read it! This book gave me a brand new way of looking at life entirely.

Every part of this book spoke directly to me, one of my favorites!!

This book is the first book I’ve ever read fully. I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression for along time. This book changes your mind and life all together. It makes you think a little bit different on how you’re life is in general. Anyone who needs to quite their mind and feel more at peace with ones self. Then here is your book.

This book gives a great insight towards self improvement! The author does it in a way that is blunt, and that bluntness is definitely needed in this modern world.

This is a great read! It is not your typical motivational book. It broadens one’s perspective to a world that is greater and larger than one’s self. It is thought provoking and helpful.

I can’t believe how much an eye opener this book is. Definitely makes you look deeper into the things you pursue in life.

Exactly when I needed it.

I never review things, but boy. This needs to be said. This reeks of r/iamverysmart. This guy quotes freud without irony. Tasteless boring analogies. Okay philosophy but wish someone with actual perspective wrote this book, not Dude Who Got Broken Up with and Started Going to the Gym. Talk about entitlement indeed. Borrows stories from the news page of Snapchat to make a radical hot take you saw your uncle post last week on Facebook. Wish i could get a refund.

it is so funny!!!

Excellent perspective and mind blowing arguments.

Amazing love it from beginning to end!

As a young man at 24 years old, this book has touched me to the core. The author’s reflection has addressed many of, if not all of the issues I’m currently facing. Thank you Mark.
