It by Stephen King Book Summary

It: Chapter Two—now a major motion picture!

Stephen King’s terrifying, classic #1 New York Times bestseller, “a landmark in American literature” (Chicago Sun-Times)—about seven adults who return to their hometown to confront a nightmare they had first stumbled on as teenagers…an evil without a name: It.

Welcome to Derry, Maine. It’s a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real.

They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made twenty-eight years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children. Now, children are being murdered again and their repressed memories of that terrifying summer return as they prepare to once again battle the monster lurking in Derry’s sewers.

Readers of Stephen King know that Derry, Maine, is a place with a deep, dark hold on the author. It reappears in many of his books, including Bag of Bones, Hearts in Atlantis, and 11/22/63. But it all starts with It.

“Stephen King’s most mature work” (St. Petersburg Times), “It will overwhelm you…to be read in a well-lit room only” (Los Angeles Times).

I loved “The Stand” and “The Shining,” but this one not so much. I didn’t appreciate the continuous versions of backstory. Too much. Too much.

- OMG Read IT it's awesome5 star

First of all I am 14 years old and love to read. This book is probably one of the best books i've read. I mean in my life. I am also a huge IT fan. I absolutely loved both of the 2017/2019 remake movies. Actually they might be two of my new favorite movies of all times. I recommend this book to people my age and older. 14+

- A masterpiece5 star

I’m a 15 year old book addict and I can say this is one of the best books I’ve ever read. This isn’t a book about a clown that kills kids, this is a book about friendship, love and the strength within us all. This book is an emotional roller coaster, and the physiological and humorous elements King weaves in along with humor are so enjoyable. The losers love and sacrifice for each other is beautiful, and the characters are so well written. You really become attached to each individual character. I’ve never cried so many times while reading one book. I recommend this book to everyone ages 14 and up (TW: sexual assault and other sexual content)

- I love IT5 star

Hi my name is georgie from that movie and I really love the book so much I think I’m gonna get it for my birthday in April 2 and where going to Disney world omg this is the best

- I love It5 star

I love the book and how it is written I also think that it chapter 2 is also a banger to watch the movies to have the full experience.

- I love Pennywise5 star

I didn’t like the bad words in this book

- Horrific.5 star

An novel that is pure horror to its core. Don’t let it’s mass fool you; this novel is endearing and full of emotion, as well as terror and suspense—so stick with it. You won’t be sorry!

- IT is AMAZING5 star

I loved this book so much! It was so descriptive and super well written. I am such a big losers club/IT fan it’s crazy. iT one and IT two are such big emotional roller coasters it is crazy. This book made laugh and cry at the same time. It is such a touching book. It also gave me nightmares. I know that may sound like a bad thing but for me a horror book has to keep me up for 2 full nights to really be considered that good and this book was that good. I also loved the movies! The kid and adult casting was literally perfect. They did such a good job it left me in shock. I literally got the chills

Love this story and the remake in 2017/2019 was fantastic. Nobody captures kids better in writing than Stephen King. I read this book when it first came out and some of the visuals are still with me. Looking to reread soon...

- amazing5 star

one of the best books I have ever read. it was nearly impossible to put down. there’s is so much more to this than the mini-series & movies. it’s length may be intimidating, but it’s a fairly easy read and took me no less than 2 weeks. I recommend this to anyone that loves horror.

- Good Book5 star

This book is very interesting and can scare any reader in my opinion. This book may not be suitable for all ages because of obvious reasons so I recommend if you are a younger reader, read this book with someone else. If you don't feel like reading this 1168 book then you can always watch the movies. They are called ”IT” and ”IT: Chapter 2” but those are really long!

- A Great Starting Book for King Fans5 star

This was the first Stephen King book I ever read, and it was amazing! The plot is so good, and the characters are so realistic that it makes you think that they really do exist. This book captures the horror elements of King’s work, but also can give you a heartfelt book at times. This was one a my favorite books of 2019, and would recommend to any person looking to get into Stephen King novels.

- Top 3 favorites of all time5 star

Difficult to put into words how terrifyingly great this story is - see for yourself

- I mean cmon it’s Steven King2 star

He is such a good writer but he was proven mentally disabeled because of his gory mind so I’m just gonna say don’t press your luck and read any of this guys books if you have a fear of clowns ripping out your guts while you are sleeping or if you are just afraid of clowns. But overall I’m not afraid of clowns so I loved the book but I just have ethics a harsh rating to tell the people out there that are scared of clowns to not read tuis

- Overall great book5 star

I have seen both movies and in my personal opinion, the book is better. The detail is great.

- Wow!5 star

Just finished reading “It,” and holy guacamole. It’s terrifying, romantic at times, humorous and most of all captivating. It’s a complex, long read with random flashbacks and with multiple narrators that can cause confusion easily if you aren’t paying attention but it adds an element of reality and emotional connection that is both enchanting and challenging. The book really strings you along for a long “coming-of-age” story that is beautifully explained at the end and gives you what you want and need. Pennywise the clown is brilliant, terrifying and complacent. The concept of “It” shapeshifting to the characters deepest fears beyond the clown allows for the reader (us) to subconsciously think about our own deepest fears and how Pennywise may play on that. While that is not implicitly stated, it is my opinion and added that extra element of horror and connection to the characters and their plight. It is a long read and quite challenging, but it puts you right at the epicenter of the confusion of childhood, love and gives you a little taste of insanity. Definitely recommend the read and worth EVERY Penny(wise).

- Incredible5 star

I’ve never seen the movies, but I doubt they could hold a candle to this novel. Incredible, totally worth the investment of time reading It.

- Best Book Ever5 star

Ok first off, great sample. I haven’t read the whole book but just the 361 page sample already has me hooked. If your parents don’t what you to read this it is understandable because there is A LOT of cussing and very homophonic comments. Along with a few murders and some cases of self harm and sucide (I don’t know how to spell it so sorry if it’s spelled wrong) If your parents do let you I personally think you’ll love this thriller. Also can we give a round of applause for Stephen King, the wonderful King of Horror. Thank you if you read this all 💭❤❤💭❤❤💭 ❤💚💛❤💛💚❤ ❤💜💛💙💛💜❤ 💭❤💜💛💜❤💭 💭💭❤💚❤💭💭 💭💭💭❤💭💭💭 we love Stephen King!!!! Also, I’m only 13 and probably shouldn’t have read this but whateva 🙃

There is no better way to describe this book than intense this book has alot of exciting emotional violent, gore concepts. The narrator must have lot of creativity tragic and upbeat ways to deliver the message and tone of what he is writing , because normally I do not read lot of Stephen king books but I read It and numerously I had felt amazed with excitement. However I am 16 and noticed this is not the book for most kids and, mainly those types of kids who have not meet maturity. Cause I have seen both the movie now and the Minnie series and I am overly excited for the new movie chapter 2 and both versions are not as explicit as the book.If you are a person down right likest intensity no matter what the cause or likes more mature skary stories then I would recommend it. But if you are the person who does not conferable with explicit violence sex, language etc then this book might be to intense for you.

Let me get something straight my mom doesn’t let me watch/read too graphic stuff. So, to sneak in some Stephen King I read the sample. Holy. Flippin. Cow. Stephen, you have outdone yourself. Just reading it I got the chills. Everything about the book is great. The storyline, the characters, the humor… honestly I have no complaints Mr. King. You are my idol. I never thought I could be so scared so quick. Good job. Big fan. P.S... if you are Stephen King or not... don’t listen to the haters. Listen to the fans. And as the odd1sout always says… wear your seatbelt.

- Wow.5 star

Wow is all I can say! It took me a while to read it because it is a big book, but once I got halfway through I couldn’t stop! 100x better than the movies and the story is just amazing in my opinion. You really get to see into the life of the kids and as they are adults too and Stephen King really goes into depth about the whole ordeal. You’ll never guess what It’s true form is!

- Phenomenal5 star

I will say that, as a big Stephen King fan, he takes about 1,000 pages or so to get into the terrifying encounters, once you get there, you will be yearning to read the next scary sentence, even if it means having nightmares! Truly a phenomenal book, and a work of art P.S. I’m eleven, so I probably shouldn’t be reading this, but whatever 🙃

Jr Mack N Cheez - I like it4 star

My favourite part was when the kid dies in the beginning

fire4$ - It: the wrung-out genius3 star

It, by Stephen king, is both one of the most thoughtful and thought provoking books in either horror or thriller genre. It’s concept is ingenious and very creative. It’s characters, dialogue and surrounding world are real, raw and well fleshed out. My only quarrel with the monumentally large book is the fact... well... it’s monumentally large. It’s drawn out, and squeezed dry. Everything about it is monotonous to read, not because it’s long, but because it’s very dry (other than the world and people). I could fill a book double the size with edits for solely the first chapter. In all seriousness the amount of “and thens” he uses is utterly ridiculous. That’s my very garbage and worthless review upon It. Hopefully it doesn’t seem too hypothetical with how messy my review is. 3.5 stars btw as a side note, I’m not capable of half stars but FYI, 3.5

TaykenOshimaQC - This book... IS AWESOME!5 star

Stephen King is one of my favorite author. The first time I’ve began to read It was from now. Now I can’t stop because I’m enjoying it so much! I’m taking my time to read it, by listening to classical music’s. But to be honest, I’m having a good experience, and I have a feeling that this book is greatly awesome! The story behind it, or well, the storyline is very VERY scary. That one line that made me think that it’s going to be awesome (and scary, because I like scary stories) is “the terror”. You’ll enjoy it, I’m pretty sure, as it’s my 5 Stars books! 11/10 Also.

mademoiselledena - Too much of a good thing3 star

Stephen King’s writing is incredibly detailed which is what I normally appreciate in a writer. However, despite King’s ability to forge vivid and highly elaborate descriptions, it was just too much. So much so that it was incredibly easy for the reader to simply forget that this book was supposed to be a horror story about a killer clown. His writing about each character’s history and feelings as well as the back-and-forth time traveling is exhaustive and dilutes the intended horror effect that King is trying to convey. Overall, King created a very messy book that was purposelessly lengthy. For me, the 2017 film was much better.

Mr Baehl - IT deserves extra content4 star

I think some maps or notes would have been worthwhile. This novel is a meaningful way to understand that the good old days where not always good. I do not hear as much music as I do when reading other Stephen King novels. The themes are fear, friendship and commitment despite it. I noticed IT was like a role playing quest. IT felt like wanting to watch a fight your friends are involved in because all these characters are about being less predictable then horror movie characters. I listened to the entire audiobook because I wanted to be aware of all the differences or elaborations in the 2017 movie and the 1990 version. I will be done in time before the 2017 movie. I was born in 1975 and I appreciate the vivid description of 1957-58. I am disappointed that 1985 did not seem as well described. I think the horror will only mean something to older adults.

Normally after you read a book that one of the main characters are your worst fear you would get even more scared of whatever you are scared of. But for me it helped so so much it made it so real but in the end I knew it couldn’t happen but there for clowns can’t eat me. Thanks to this book I am not terrified of clowns any more

Jgod1591 - One of the best ever5 star

I had this book as a teenager and gave up on it because of the length. Now at 46 and having an addiction to reading, i found it not just s great book but that i was actually kind of sad when it ended. King brings so much more depth to the characters who are known from the movies. There are many very very adult situations in the book so it’s certainly not for anyone under 18. But the struggle to go from adolescence to adulthood. From not being loved to loved. To facing fears as a child only to replace them with new ones as an adult, it was very easy to connect to the characters. Very much reminded me of the stand in its depth of character development. I will certainly revisit Derry again with the losers club prior to the release of the second movie. But it was a fascinating time going through the book.

I have the paper copy book, but I’ll leave a review for this one. I love it, though, it doesn’t scare me, for some reason. I don’t know if I’m weird, or not. But this is a great 1038 (or so) paged book! I know some things like; We all float down here! Kill them all! Kill them all!… Though I haven’t read the whole thing yet, so it could spook me. Otherwise, perfect book!

I picked this book up again after watching its new cinematic adaptation in the theaters. I’m a very big fan of Stephen King’s work, and I personally believe that this is his best book to date. It’s a long read, but it has a great combination of suspense and humor. There is a considerable amount of character development, and, by the end of the novel, I was heavily invested in the main cast and the struggles they endured. It’s a great read and I strongly recommend it to anyone who’s a fan of the suspense or horror genre.

i’m only 13 reading this currently and i got it after i saw all the hype before the 2017 movie came out early in sept. i’m only on page 200 nearly 300 and i’d say it’s just greatly written and just has me want to keep reading. it’s the longest book my entire school has even seen and they’re shocked i want to read it. as a HUGE fan of the newest movie (2017) and the (1990) film, this is a great book to read whether youve seen the movie first or not.
