Changing of the Guard by James Farner Book Summary
“I thought my parents were killed when two runaway packhorses threw off their loads at the Ebonson Carrying Company…I was wrong.”
Queen Victoria ascends the throne in 1837 and heralds in a new era of prosperity for the British Empire. Whilst the great Norlong and Ebonson families fly the flag for the British Empire, Edward Urwin spends his time scratching pieces of art into the cobblestones of Birmingham.
Life is straightforward for Edward until a strange old man approaches him in the street. With the help of Henry Beechworth, Edward learns to read and use his special talents to win a place at St. John’s Boarding School.
But it isn’t all down to good fortune. Edward doesn’t realise he’s under control of forces far more powerful than him. Forces that are determined to shape him in their image. Forces that are determined to bury the mystery of the demise of the Urwin family for good…

Terrible. It sucked
An interesting multigenerational novel. The plot winds through multiple generations of several interconnected English families. It held my interest. The tale twists and turns.
Changing of the guards. A bit unbelievable as the plot developed but intriguing regardless. I liked many of the characters; good job at developing their personalities.
Very Hard to Follow. Highly unlikely any of this could have happened. Convoluted in the extreme.
Complex characters; fascinating timeline. Just.keep.reading. A bit like the surprise ways O. Henry novels would tie up all loose ends. Only this was hundreds of intriguing pages instead of a short story. Well done!
Drivel. So boring.

Changing of the guard. Convoluted story, superficial characters, gratuitous turn arounds
Changing of the Guard. Very enjoyable read. at a good pace and reasonably smooth plot.
Changing of the Guard. Not the best story I have ever read. The characters are rather one dimensional. Okay but nothing special
Becomes predictable. Was ok to start off with, but soon it becomes predictable. Lost interest towards the end
Loses 2 stars. For the predictable and anticlimactic ending. This was a really enthralling read right up until the last chapter, which seemed rushed and unfulfilling.

Grand Funk Railroad (often shortened to Grand Funk) is an American rock band formed in Flint, Michigan, in 1969 by Mark Farner (vocals, guitar, keyboards, harmonica), Don Brewer (drums, vocals), and Mel Schacher (bass). The band achieved peak popularity and success during the 1970s with hit songs such as "We're an American Band", "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)", "Some Kind of Wonderful" (a cover of Soul Brothers Six), "Walk Like a Man", "The Loco-Motion" (a cover of Little Eva), "Bad Time" and "Inside Looking Out" (a cover of the Animals). Grand Funk released six platinum and seven gold-certified albums between their recording debut in 1969 and their first disbandment in 1976. Known for a crowd-pleasing arena rock style, the band toured extensively and played to packed arenas worldwide, and was well-regarded by audiences despite a relative lack of critical praise. The original trio reunited at various times later into the band's career; after Farner's final departure in 1998, Br....
