Once Gone (a Riley Paige Mystery—Book 1)

Once Gone (a Riley Paige Mystery—Book 1) by Blake Pierce Book Summary

“A masterpiece of thriller and mystery! The author did a magnificent job developing characters with a psychological side that is so well described that we feel inside their minds, follow their fears and cheer for their success. The plot is very intelligent and will keep you entertained throughout the book. Full of twists, this book will keep you awake until the turn of the last page.” --Books and Movie Reviews, Roberto Mattos (re Once Gone)

Women are turning up dead in the rural outskirts of Phoenix, killed in grotesque ways, and when the FBI is called in, they are stumped. A serial killer is out there, his frequency increasing, and they know there is only one agent who can crack this case: Special Agent Riley Paige.

Riley is on paid leave herself, recovering from her encounter with her last serial killer, and as fragile as she is, the FBI is reluctant to tap her brilliant mind. Yet Riley, needing to battle her own demons, comes on board, and her hunt leads her through the disturbing subculture of doll collectors, into the homes of broken families, and into the darkest canals of the killer’s mind. As Riley peels back the layers, she realizes she is up against a killer more twisted than she could have imagined, and in a frantic race against time, Riley is pushed to her limit, her job on the line, her own family in danger, and her fragile psyche collapsing.

Yet once Riley Paige takes on a case, she will not quit. It obsesses her, leading her to the darkest corners of her own mind, blurring the lines between hunter and hunted. After a series of unexpected twists, her instincts lead her to a shocking climax that even Riley could not have imagined.

A dark psychological thriller with heart-pounding suspense, ONCE GONE marks the debut of a riveting new series—and a beloved new character—that will leave you turning pages late into the night.

What a book! You can’t put it down. Finished it in one day and loved every minute heck with housework

This was thrilling page turner. I can’t wait until I have the next book to read!

The book has potential. BUT the author makes Riley out to be dumb. In The beginning as she's this great agent far above the others. But the book runs on and on of her repeated mistakes. And then they pat her on the back for it. She doesn't follow up on leads and blindly arrests people after judging them with little evidence.

I enjoyed this book a lot. Story unfolded slowly, keeping interest high.

Good book. Nicely written.

This is a great read. The Main is well developed and all too human. Very relatable on an emotional level but also piques the criminal curiosity. The grammatical errors aren’t extremely abundant, but are numerous enough that I began to cringe after awhile.

I enjoyed the elements of surprise and suspense and depth of the characters, especially Riley. I did feel like the climax was a bit rushed, but enjoyed it overall. Will be continuing on to book 2.

listen up im a total bookworm and i've read a LOT of books but this (+harry potter) HAS to be one of my all time favorites, i mean i finished it in 2 days, it's that good, im really glad it's a series and im gonna read and remember it. im gonna recommend it alot too. SO DONT KEEP CALM AND JUST READ THE BOOK thankyu 😌✨💅

This was a great mystery book that kept you reading to the very end!! Great storyline and plot!

The story line is good, the characters are well developed and for the most part very believable. On the downside though, it’s like watching a bad horror movie where the characters behave in ways that are too extreme to be believed and I’d catch myself saying, “There’s NO way she’d do something that stupid and work for the FBI”.

Interesting, developed characters and although sometimes predictable, the story keeps you reading until the very end. Quick easy, enjoyable read

This was a great read. Recently I started to get into books again. And I’ve been drawn to Pierces’ books. Once I’m into the store, it’s hard putting down my phone.

This is awesome! I can’t believe there are so many details here! I love this book!!! ✨❤️❤️❤️

This book is amazing!

Great! Wonderful attention to detail, great descriptions.

Good character development and fast-paced-don’t-wanna-put-down read.

An amazing book to read! I read this before bed, story line and the characters are amazing in this.

Not my type of book or series. I would be very fearful if I had to rely on an FBI agent like Riley to save my life. Too much time spent crying or waiting for “the clue” to fall on her lap.

I love the stories and her style of writing but there are so many spelling mistakes that it becomes pretty annoying.

Scary but otherwise it’s a great read 😨👍

I couldn’t finish this one. I can understand a typo here and there but this book had an alarming number of errors of all kinds on almost every page! Story telling and writing are two different skills and unfortunately this author only has one- well maybe one, I didn’t actually get very far into the story to find out.

Great book. Wished more development of the suspect was done. That storyline was just there no true development or interaction with man character. Otherwise great read.

The author does a nice job of developing the characters and plot but a few chapters were irrelevant and no value to the storyline. The ending was rushed and a big flop. Small item...book needs proofreading as it has a number of typos and grammatical errors.

This book is just idiotic. Horribly leaden in its prose (the killer has “a secret lair”), cliched in its plotting (the heroine is independent, even rogue, so she loses her badge and gun) and characterization (she has a moody and uncommunicative teenage daughter and romantic tension with her partner) but mostly it cheats. The protagonist is a great detective because she instinctively knows who did it and who didn’t. She doesn’t investigate or deduce. She doesn’t detect and interpret clues. She just knows. It might as well be a book about a fortune teller. A complete waste of time.

A wonderful read. I felt myself in the mind of Riley Paige, can’t wait to start the next in the series.

This book frighten me from the get-go. I wasn’t certain if I should keep reading but then I couldn’t put it down.

Everything about this is great. Makes you connect with every character and feel everything about the cases. You can almost picture it being a movie!! I love it can’t wait to read the rest

This book reads as if it was written by a tenth grader. Okay premise- terrible execution.

It was a amazing book and honestly I would recommend to read

Well written and the characters were well developed. However, I felt like the ending was rushed. The build-up to the climax was great, but in my opinion, I wish there was more “conversation” between Riley and the big baddie. That said, I’m excited to see Riley’s journey throughout the series.

I wish I were able to give higher than 5 stars. I’m on book 10 of the series and I can’t read them fast enough. If you’re looking for a series that will keep you guessing and keep you wanting more, then this is for you. I have purchased many books and this series is by far the best I have come across. I don’t think twice about purchasing the next one.

Couldn’t put the book down. I can’t wait to start book 2. Watch out Riley, here I come!!

This book is so good! I finished it within a week and I really couldn’t put it down once I started. There was some repetition and punctuation/grammatical errors. However, you can find that in any book you pick up. My only comment is that in this book you’ll find that some phrases or words the author uses for a specific character are a bit unrealistic. The 14 year old daughter, for example, seems to use words and phrases that no 14 year old would say, especially how the author portrays her. Other than that this book was amazing!

I haven’t found a book I couldn’t put done in a long time. Kept me hooked the entire way through.

Liked the book but it really annoys me when American characters are narrated with a British accent. It’s hard for me to get the feel for the setting when the voice is all wrong for the story.

I read this book in less than 24 hours. It keeps you interested throughout the entire thing. Highly recommend!

Soooo good. I’d never been sucked into a book like that. It was so hard to put down. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

The plot was just mind blowing loved it!!! ( anyway if u have time please check out my book “silent valley” ) I shall be thankful

Although I don’t feel like I got a clear picture of Riley herself, I did receive enough details of her to understand her work ethics and how it reacted with her private life. Unfortunately, I felt like it was a down-graded model of Thomas Harris’ famed novels. Even to go so far as to use the name “Gumm” as a character.

Kept you on edge all the way to the end.

Loved, Loved, Loved this book. Hated to put it down! Will have to read more of the series! But, first, I had better finish laundry and housework! Well worth a read!

I started reading this because the reviews were great. Soon learned it’s very slow and boring. Not much action at all. I finished it because I kept thinking the whole time that it was going to get better but never did. I won’t be continuing on with this series.

With her unique gift to probe into the mind of a serial murderer, a black female rookie detective attempts to profile and logically predict his next moves. Her remarkable sleuthing prowess dwarfs her clueless, dimwit of a partner’s professional ability, a white male with more years of experience in the homicide department. This matter will definitely raise many a reader’s eyebrows, although one may argue otherwise.

Trash book. It was so trash that it made me want to die

Good book

I’ve never written a review before but this book was so good I felt obligated. I love crime thrillers in general, but this book topped the list. The character dynamics felt natural and the action genuinely had my heart pounding. I didn’t even hesitate before buying the next one after reading the first in only a day. Do yourself a favor if you like the genre and read this book!

As an 80 year old woman, I live with more pain than I can live with without using a heavy type of little brown pill to lower my pain level to one I can live with. Pain(at least what I must daily cope with) takes away my interest in almost every thing Except this hurt. however at last., I have found a novelist, whose writing can compete with my.pain level, and hold my interest long enough To enjoy this book all the way through. A good book I enjoyed all the way to the end. THANK YOU SO MUCH for letting me have a reprieve from my pain and allowing me a few moments to enjoy life. Thank you, Granny Ginger

I could not put this book down. It kept you on pins and needles with a bit of the good old boy attitude

Very interesting. Good read.

Over and over again the protagonist defies the most basic rule of being in the FBI by going into a situation with no back up. Obviously the author believes that the FBI hires idiots. They don’t. The selection Process is actually quite rigourous and there’s no way Riley Paige would have made it through that.

Really enjoyed this book, can’t wait to start book #2!

Good read. It keeps you guessing till the end.

Kept me on the edge to the end. Well done

I couldn’t put it down. The whole story was very descriptive and emotional. I felt like i was living the nightmare the characters did. 10/10 recommend it.

Great story!

A women with her own struggles still struggled to help others and go against evil.. I like it

This book keeps you engaged but it's story is like any other tv series .. Wish d author had given more insight about d killer .. Ended abruptly for me .

Complete page turner!! Could not get enough of this series! Can't wait for the next book!

A stimulating quick-read. I love how Pierce dives right into it & leaves out the drawn out, overly-descriptive writing style, once you start reading, you can't stop! Loved it :)

Hell of a great read. Fast paced, page turner, very suspenseful. Highly recommend this book.

Absolutely loved this book. Got it free and thought why not. Well now I'm hooked. I have read the other 3 in the series. Can't wait for more. Enjoy Blake's writing style. Really gets into the meat of the story with out all that fluffy description stuff, which I feel authors tend to use as filler. I want to know what's going on with the characters and that's exactly what these books do. Now I'll be looking for anything more Blake Pierce writes. Got but haven't read the 2 in the new series. Anyone I've recommend them too have really enjoyed them. Thanks from a big fan!! Cheers Pat C.

A riveting book with fascinating characters, I couldn't put it down and read it in one afternoon. I picked up this book for free and have just purchased the next two books in the series. I have no doubt they'll be worth it.

Wow ! I could NOT put this book down and read it throughout the night. Meaning a long day at work as consequence. But it was worth it ! Superbly written with solid characters and a reality that make you wonder how many years the author spent working as an FBI agent. I recommend this book to anyone who loves mysteries, thrillers, or just a good, solid read!

Enjoyed this book very much from beginning to end.

Couldn't put it down, never a dull moment exciting from beginning to end, amazing writer!!

This book kept me spell bound from start to finish. I am looking forward to Once Taken and hope it is just as good.

Hard to put down.very good story

I like everything about this book.

One of the first times I’ve felt the need to write a review after well over 100 iBook purchases. I tried hard but could not get past about the first third of this nonsense. Absolute drivel. Poorly written and proofread. At one point the lead agents name is confused with the victim of the crime she’s investigating, ffs. Extremely cliched, and oversimplified in areas that require more insight.. the lead agent just simply inhabits the mind of the killer when they need info.. And at the same time massively overreaches in areas of absolute nothingness.. the lead agents partner needs to hide his admiration for her when she thinks to ask a witness where they bought an object that may help with their investigation? Can not believe this is promoted to people and is not free or comes with a disclaimer to readers warning that they may be dumber by the time they finish it

Just a usual serial killer murder mystery. Ok for a casual reading

Blake Pierce's books are atrocious and an insult to serious fiction readers worldwide. The stories are something that a grade school student could slam together in a very short amount of time. The number of typos, grammatical errors, and plain bad English is unforgivable but when an author starts mixing up the names of their characters there is seriously something wrong, and Blake does this in every book that I have read. Blake does zero research which can probably be forgiven as none is required for his/her stories which is why Blake's books are so blah. I only read Blake's books when advertised as free on Bookbub (thankfully I have not parted with any of my hard earned cash) just to see if he/she has grown as an author after such prolific self publishing...unfortunately I have been disappointed on each occasion. Blake Pierce should consider doing a few writers’ workshops. Blake needs to put more time and effort and research into writing stories that will grab the attention of people for their intricacy, attention to detail, plot twists, and intrigue rather than churning out the pulp that we have come to expect from him/her. It is also time for Blake to stop self publishing and employ some professionals...editors, proof readers, copy editors...people that will actually tell him/her the truth, that people are not interested in such predictable, clichéd, recipe book fiction. NEVER AGAIN!

I didn’t find this book especially great reading. Story lines and dialogue were a tad too predictable, convenient and cliched for me. I won’t be reading anymore in the series.

Clumsy, unstylish writing, unsophisticated plot and no tension.

Enjoyed the characters. Good story

This book is wonderfully exciting and very well put together. The book itself is spectacular but there are mistakes. One that got me is when Riley is going to visit Reba's family after the tragedy, the young boy offered REBA a seat. Obviously it was supposed to say Riley as Riley then sat down and Reba was killed. There are more but I just wanted to address this one. Other than that, lovely book. Really sends chills down my spine!

Excellent story great story. Found a new author.

Someone needs a better proof reader and a new career. I can't believe there are more than one of them, surely no one paid to read them.

Brilliantly written, it captivated me from start to finish. Couldn't put it down! Can't wait to read the next book

Great read from start to finish🤓🤓🤓.

Fantastic new characters and so happy to have found another new author to read.

Really enjoyed the pace of the story, couldn't believe how quick I got to the end. Next book already downloaded. Can't wait! Thanks

Read it in 3 hours. Loved it

This is my favourite book that I’ve read so far, hands down. And it gives so much light to the way Riley is in the Ella Dark series.

I am glad I didn’t pay for it.

Interesting read

Thrilling and gripping in the beginning, but the storytelling felt disappointing after the half-time.

Well, I am now on book Seven in the “once” series. I cannot put my tablet down, I’m losing my sleep as these stories are quite simply brilliant, the plot, the characters, fantastic. However, I just want to say, for the price I would expect zero spelling and grammatical errors, come on publishers please correct, some sentences don’t even make sense. Just a small niggle, I do know though, despite the errors I shall complete the series. More Shane the Chain lol.

Enjoyed this, worth a read

I have read both these books and I think they are well written and great story lines I can't say enough about them can't wait to get the next one and hopefully read some of your other books thank you

Amazing book from start to finish. Gripping and leaving you wanting more. Very well done, on to the second book now.

Im onto book 12 now and cant get enough of these books. I feel like i know the characters, and i cant seem to put a book down once i start reading it. Ive got a month to read this book before book 13 comes out and i cant wait.

This book had me gripped from the first page and the ability the author has to paint enough of a picture to feel as though you are actually there step by step is extraordinary! I gasped in a number of places! I cannot wait to read the next book!

Really enjoyable book you feel you are in the story.

Found it extremely hard to put this book down. An on the edge of your seat thriller with twists and turns all the way through. I'm starting book 2 'Once Taken' immediately. Thanks Blake.

Absolutely loved this book. Really kept you gripped to the end. Really looking forward to reading more books in the series.

You feel like your within the book watching the scenes unfold. Wow.

I've never before gotten into s crime thriller book. However, I was hooked from this book from the start. Will definetly be buying the series.

It's been a long time since I've felt tension from a book. Gripping read. Great flow of story line. Recommended read

A dramatic page turner.

We have a new fictional hero to follow. FBI Agent Riley Paige can get into the minds of the psychopaths that prey on the innocent. This ability of hers comes with a price, nearly destroying relationships and family. She reminds me a little of Val McDermid's Tony Hill from 'The Mermaid Singing' and 'Wire in the Blood'. Will enjoy following this series.

Poorly written, shallow and disjointed. Weak, unbelievable characters behaving in unbelievable ways. Don't bother!

Such a great book, I really enjoyed reading it. The story line kept me stupidly addicted to reading the book at every possible moment. A great author... now to download the next book - eek

One of the best books I've read! Cannot fault it. I've downloaded them all now so I can keep on reading.. obsessed!

This was my first online book and I'm so glad I started with this. Absolutely brilliant. Well done. I recommend this for any crime lover to read.

It full with actions. The way it delivered, was carefully explained. Great book!

Hooked from start to finish!

1st book in a series that just grabs you and doesn't let go. Raced through it and the ending makes you eager to get the next book to see what happens next to Riley. Haven't come across this author before but going to keep an eye out fir future books. Well done!

Each page made me wanting to know more. Every chapter was interesting and kept me turning page after page, I couldn't put this book down especially in the last four or so chapters. I would never have guessed who it was until near the end. Brilliant read.

It didn't draw me into that much but it was still good enough for to make me keep reading!

Really enjoyed this book kept me intrigued all the way

Great book. Couldn't put it down.

Thoroughly good read. Straightforward informative descriptions of events and characters. Easy to read, no distractive leaps forward and backwards in time like most books of this genre. As a Karin Slaughter and Tess Gerritsen fan I found this book very good and will definitely read more of Blakes work. Recommended!

Best book I've read in a long time, kept me gripped till the end, then the twist! Looking forward to 'once taken'

I downloaded this book based on the reviews and ratings and it did not disappoint! Couldn't put it down - read it in three days. Great for a skim reading like me, too ☺️ recommended for people who like crime thrillers ☺️

Really enjoyed this book haven't found another crime book I like since Jane casey but these are deffo in the same league can't wait to read the next one

Really great book, totally hooked! Really draws you into the mystery can't wait to read the next one, must read

Bloody awesome!!!

The story and characters are poorly thought through. Most of what happens is either just so or so unlikely, it beggars belief. None of which makes for a good read. I did manage to finish it, but that's about all I can say. It was free, so maybe that should have given me a hint to the quality

Really irritating amount of typos and mistakes in this book - if I pay for a book, I expect the right names to be used (at one point the detective is called the name of a victim) and I certainly expect a spell check to have been done. Bit disappointing as the story moved along quite well - but careless errors and mistakes make it so irritating!

Brilliant book! Could not put it down from the very first page. Loved it so much I bought book 2 and managed to read both books within 3 days! Cannot wait for the third book later this year

Brilliant, couldn't put it down. Going to download the second book.

Stupid stupid stupid book.

Pacey and captivating - you'll want to read it in one sitting. Story line reels you in and characters believable and likeable.

Simply absolutely brilliant,well written,fast paced believeable characters,brilliant story,read it!!

I loved it. I love thrillers and I was glade I came across this Author. I was on the edge of my seat for the whole book.

This was a pretty good book. I finished it in a few hours, so that says A LOT about how drawn in I was with the story. It would have gotten 5 stars but quite a few chapters felt rushed..as if the writer was trying not to go over a certain word count, but still making the attempt to tell the story. I’m about to download the 2nd book in the series, so you definitely have gained a fan in me.

Very good book. Was a bit scared at times but is absolutely worth the read. Loved it.

Amazing :)

Predicative and basic writing.

Read this awhile ago but wanted to give it a thumbs up. Interesting and liked the characters

Excellent. Interesting characters and situations. Exciting and not so predictable

I would give this book five stars in a heartbeat if there weren’t so many mistakes! Accidents happen but I’ve found most of his books are this way. However, both books I’ve read have been great reads!

I sincerely hope there are no real FBI agents as irrational, impulsive, and overwrought as the Riley Paige character in this book. Granted, her “amazing” psychic abilities would be useful for a real agent, but they are far too convenient to be believable. I’m afraid her character is just too much a contrivance to be sympathetic and relatable. This could be a good story, if only.... I won’t be reading any more of this series. I’ll take a Tracy Crosswhite over this character any day.

Amazing

Easy read. Cliche themes. Kinda cheesy. Not bad but not unique.

I was captivated quickly by this story. It flowed smoothly and brought the reader into the mystery convincingly. I enjoyed the tension throughout. Vic

Good character development and fast reading. Great story in that it could be true.

Really enjoyed the book. And how she can get into the minds of the killers. Can’t wait to read all of the books by this author to see if they are all as great as this one.

Riveting! I couldn’t wait to get back to the book. Kept my attention to the end.

Its not ok because it has some brain parts it is discussed.....Jk ITS AMAZING¡,,,,,YOU HAVE TO GET IT NOW

First book of the series finished and can’t wait to read the next!

i could NOT put this book down. who cares that there were typos - it was clear what the author was trying to say. i read this book in 2 days. i cannot day enough good about it! on to book #2!

Absolutely an amazing read !!!!!! Loved it.

This ebook is plagued with typos. One or two would be something to look past, but there is a substantial amount of misspellings. There is even a part where a character is referred to by the wrong name.

This book was a awesome read! I have definitely recommended it to others. I cannot wait to read the other books in the series! Kudos to the author !

I stumbled upon this author in my recommendations list and I must say; he/she did not disappoint. I started with the Avery Black Mystery novel : A Cause to Kill and was so enthralled that I had to read another. Before I knew it I was headed deep into the Riley Paige Mystery’s as well. Overall, i must say that I have never been more satisfied with making a purchase for a collection of novels in my entire life. Thank you Blake Pierce; for your writings are truly a gift.

Once you start, you get glued to the pages. Well written, capturing each event articulate and presenting every scenery with the best of words to put you right there, awesome. It’s worth your time if you like crime stories and enjoy seeing the solutions unfolds in your very eye. You learn and see behavior and how it affects real life situations.

The book is good but I felt like something was missing or needed more action. The investigation took a while, so I thought in between a killing I was going to find clues, more mystery surrounding each deaths, more drama Once the killer is found that was it. The reason why he was troubled is just like not enough and needed more reasons. Still, I recommend this book because it has actually two stories running within. One gets resolved, the other one continues.

I loved this book and I plan on reading them all! I would recommend this book to anyone who like crime mysteries.

This is the first murder mystery I've read that isn't clogged with too many characters & a hard to follow narrative. I loved the fact that it was easy to follow.

I love the Riley Paige character. She’s a strong, independent female FBI agent who has to face her tortured past, but never gives up hope! Looking forward to Book #2 as her adventures continue.

Good read, the whole series is awesome!!

Great story and writing. Read the second book as well and will get the third one too.

I wanted to like this book and Riley Paige but I had a hard time doing it. There was not enough development of any of the characters although we did get to go into Riley’s tortured soul. The author rushed the ending almost like he got tired of the story. I’ll plan on reading some of his other work to see if it gets better. In summary a lot of missed opportunity with this book.

While reading this book I felt like I was watching a movie while being in it! Loved this book so much! Great job

kept me on the edge of my seat. a must read if u like this type of book

Intriguing; looking forward to the next book in the series

You won’t want to put this book down until you finish it. And then you’re hooked. After that you will read every one of his books and get to know all of the characters and want to follow them and see how they are doing, almost as real people. Welcome to the family!

This was a very good book. It was a suspenseful book that was hard to put down. It keeps you on your toes. I’m ready for book #2.

As I said in my title this is a very pedestrian book, from the writing to the story line, really a waste of time.

The story was okay, but there were grammatical and continuation errors throughout. It was nice to read when I didn’t have anything else to do, but I’m personally not tempted to read any of the rest of the series.

Excellent!!!!!

Riley is a wonderful character I love how u put in that twist at the end with Bill and her the characters all seem so authentic. I think your writing is amazing going into depth even with little things shows me a full story in my mind it's like I'm watching a movie while I'm reading I don't know how to thank you 😊 for making this so all I really wanna say is thank you!!! (Love April character)

Could not put this book down! I sat down and read it straight through in a matter of hours

- I was very pleased with this book.

The main character was all over the place and the plot subpar

Can't put it down!!!

I liked it a lot! Good read!

Once Gone is a great book for those who like the pages to "turn themselves." I was thrilled to start this book and now I'm even more thrilled to continue reading the Riley Paige series.

And annoying. FBI agents do not continuously run off into a possible killer's place alone. No suspension of disbelief here.

Page turner

Can't wait to read the next book in this series

B.

Very well written, great characters & plot. Worth the download.

About Blake Pierce Wiki

Charles Pierce (July 14, 1926 – May 31, 1999) was one of the 20th century's foremost female impersonators, particularly noted for his impersonation of Bette Davis. Life and career Born in Watertown, New York, he began his show business career playing the organ and acting in radio dramas at station WWNY. He branched out into a comedy routine, attired in tuxedo, yet managing to evoke eerily convincing imitations of popular movie actresses. Eschewing the term drag queen, which he hated, he billed himself as a male actress. Initially playing in small gay clubs, his fame spread. He took up residence in San Francisco, where his act became well known to Hollywood stars. As he toured, his costuming became more elaborate, initially adding small props, later full costume and makeup changes. His imitations were imitated by other female impersonators, and his roles included Bette Davis, Mae West, Tallulah Bankhead, Gloria Swanson, Carol Channing, Katharine Hepburn, and Joan Crawford, and these ...
